Background / History

Houtu is one of the Twelve Ancestral Witches born from Pangu's essence blood and a master of the Witch Clan. Unlike her siblings, whose natures are steeped in battle and slaughter, her aura is gentle and compassionate. She was nurtured at the outermost edge beneath Mount Buzhou, where she absorbed less baleful qi than the other Ancestral Witches. This left her physical body comparatively weaker, but her soul more complete. 1 11

While climbing Mount Buzhou, Houtu sensed an aura sharing her origin and discovered the still-gestating Pan Xuan within gathered mysterious yellow energy. She brought him back to Pangu Hall. After detecting the faint fluctuation that revealed he was alive, she opposed proposals to refine him with Ancestral Witch blood essence and insisted that a relic related to Pangu be treated cautiously. 1 2

Once Pan Xuan's origin in Pangu's righteous qi was confirmed, Houtu immediately accepted him as her younger brother. She helped organize the Twelve Ancestral Witches' instruction of him, patiently answered his questions while expounding the Dao, and gave him a drop of her own essence blood to stabilize his foundation and hasten his cultivation. 3 7 8

After Pan Xuan took human form, Houtu volunteered to receive the Heavenly Enlightenment Wisdom Light. The technique resonated unusually strongly with her and awakened a cluster of spiritual light in her Niwan Palace: the first primordial spirit known among the Witch Clan. Zhu Jiuyin confirmed that this event had fundamentally changed her future. 10 11

With a primordial spirit, Houtu gained conscious comprehension of the Law of Earth rather than merely wielding it by instinct. She recognized a route beyond the Golden Immortal of the Great Firmament and requested periodic enlightenment from Pan Xuan to accelerate her primordial spirit's growth. 12

When the Primordial Heaven-Measuring Ruler was brought from Pangu Hall, Houtu declined to refine it despite being the only Ancestral Witch then possessing the primordial spirit necessary for treasure refinement. She explained that her newly born spirit was still too immature to refine such a supreme treasure. She also determined that its merit and Profound Yellow nature matched Pan Xuan's foundation more closely, and persuaded her siblings to entrust it to him. 13

Houtu later supported Pan Xuan's proposal that the Witch Clan avoid premature expansion, secretly gather baleful qi and battlefield remains, and wait for the Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin Clans to exhaust one another. She accompanied the group on these expeditions, cultivated her primordial spirit, and exchanged insights into the laws of heaven and earth with Pan Xuan. 15 18

Pangu subsequently brought Houtu's primordial spirit to full maturity, matching it to her physical body and removing the instability that had prevented her from refining powerful treasures. After receiving his inheritance, she spent many years subduing the Destruction Stele and successfully stored it within her Niwan Palace. Her primordial spirit also became the coordinating core of the Dutian Divine Fiends Grand Formation, greatly strengthening its Pangu Phantom. 27 28 29 30 31

Houtu helped develop the Witch Clan's Martial Dao and participated in repairing the devastated Western Earth Veins. Her Earth Law located and reconnected scattered vein fragments, while Di Jiang transported them and Zhu Rong and Gong Gong worked together to fuse them. When Hong Jun invited cultivators to hear his Dao, Houtu initially considered attending because understanding another path might be useful. She accepted Pan Xuan's warning that the Witch Clan should preserve the integrity of its own Martial Dao and decided not to go. Pan Xuan understood that her primordial spirit gave her a natural affinity for the Heavenly Dao, rather than interpreting her interest as distrust of the clan's path. 46 47

As the Witch Clan expanded its foundations, Houtu helped transplant innate spiritual roots, collected earth-aspected star origins, and participated in deductions concerning the Zhoutian Star Dou Great Array. Houtu accompanied Pan Xuan and Zhu Jiuyin to the Blood Sea and helped establish its purification network. During the expansion of that network, she sensed a call from the embryonic Reincarnation Law beneath the Blood Sea. At Pan Xuan's request, she promised to consult him before acting and remained nearby to pursue her insights. After testing the Three Pure Ones' new Dao Cultivation system, Houtu received a further inheritance from Pangu that identified her as the one responsible for establishing reincarnation. Following reincarnation's establishment, Houtu used Great Dao merit to advance to mid-stage Primordial Origin Golden Immortal. Over the ensuing ages, Houtu governed a Netherworld whose jurisdiction expanded to all beings of the Primordial World. Houtu is compassionate, observant, and protective. She was the first Ancestral Witch to detect Pan Xuan's concealed life aura, yet she paired that caution with a refusal to treat him as an object to be refined. 2

Her care is practical as well as emotional: she grants him essence blood, supports his wish to face the outside world, and remains attentive to the strain caused by his use of Heavenly Enlightenment Wisdom Light. 7 8 12 16
