Background / History
Gaia, the primordial Earth Mother Goddess, was exiled after the Heavenly Realm developed into a complete and unchanging order. Following her death, her corpse became the Dungeon. Drawing upon the planet's ley lines, Gaia created it from darkness and resentment toward the gods and the life she had once nurtured. 203 206
The Dungeon became an ancient threat to the Lower World: it bred monsters that emerged onto the surface and slaughtered living beings. Orario was built above it, while the gods established the Familia system to help humanity survive against its monsters. 2
Divine interference deepened the Dungeon's hostility toward gods. Its creation of Antares, a monster able to devour gods and wield their power, was retaliation for such interference. 143 181
During Ming Ge's campaign against the Evil Faction, Satella transported seven evil gods into the Dungeon's ninety-seventh floor. Their presence caused the Dungeon to go berserk, trapping them beyond the Heavenly Realm's reach and unleashing heightened monster activity. 111 112
After Ming Ge killed the surviving sealed gods in the core layers, the Dungeon opened a path for him to Floor 100. There he met Gaia, accepted her love, and received authority over the Dungeon. He subsequently used the Magic Network to transform its veins while preserving his promise to protect adventurers. 204 206
Nature and Functions
| Function | Details |
|---|---|
| Monster production | Generates monsters that instinctively hate life and long for the surface world. 2 206 |
| Reincarnation | Reclaims and gestates monster souls; souls of beings who die within the Dungeon can be drawn into this cycle. 122 164 |
| Ley-line control | Extends influence through the planet's earthly veins. 206 |
| Magic-stone ecosystem | Defeated monsters yield magic stones, which adventurers exchange through the Guild and which can be processed into magic items. 13 |
| Anti-god containment | In its core region, it can sever gods from the Heavenly Realm, prevent their return to Heaven, and devour their divine souls. 112 203 |
Structure and Environment
- The Dungeon is a multi-floor labyrinth beneath Orario; its upper floors are reached through the passage below Babel Tower. 2 21
- Its internal structure can restore destroyed walls, traps, and markings over time. Its walls also possess strong corrosive properties, necessitating orichalcum for the artificial labyrinth's construction. 111
- The Dungeon contains a complete ecosystem rather than merely producing monsters. 99
- Floor bosses possess especially large bodies and magic stones, with longer respawn periods than ordinary monsters; Goliath respawns in two weeks, while Udaeus requires three months. 106
- The thirty-seventh floor, the White Palace, is approximately the size of Orario and comprises the Beast, Soldier, Warrior, Knight, and Throne Halls around concentric walls. Its unmapped regions are labyrinthine enough that lost adventurers may never return. 105
- Floors 97 through 100 constitute the core layers. Floor 100 contains Gaia and a vast crystal associated with the reincarnation system. 204
Behavior and Defenses
Hostility Toward Intruders
The Dungeon regards adventurers as invaders. Even its weakest monsters can appear in coordinated groups or attempt ambushes, while deeper areas become darker, more complex, and more psychologically oppressive. 22 23 105
- Monsters grow more dangerous and cunning as explorers descend. 50
- The Dungeon's normal potential-threat classifications can fail during periods of heightened activity, allowing powerful monsters to appear in upper floors. 155 173
- Monsters may revive after death as part of the Dungeon's restorative cycle. 111
Sentience and Rampage Response
The Dungeon possesses a dispersed will and sensory system extending through its walls. Severe destruction—such as damage across more than two layers below the twenty-fifth floor that outpaces its repairs—can provoke it to create exceptionally dangerous monsters. 131
- It can sense both the evil gods within its depths and major events involving its monsters, including the Black Dragon battle on the surface. 116
- The imprisonment of seven evil gods in its core levels caused a berserk state and a monster tide toward the surface. 112 123
- It treats gods as enemies and is considered an existence equal to them rather than a mere labyrinth. 143
Core-Layer God Suppression
The core layers function as a domain where divine power is heavily restricted.
- Gods cannot summon the Heavenly Realm's return mechanism from the core region. 112
- Divine souls destroyed there cannot return to Heaven for resurrection, instead being consumed by the Dungeon. 203
- Three of the seven imprisoned evil gods were devoured by Dungeon monsters, while the remaining four survived temporarily through self-sealing. 112 202
Reincarnation and Xenos
The Dungeon normally draws in the souls of dead monsters and gestates them anew. Souls that die far from it, such as the Black Dragon's, are only weakly drawn back and may instead dissipate before returning. 122
Xenos are an irregular result of this system. Some humans who died inside the Dungeon were not guided to Heaven, instead entering its reincarnation cycle and retaining intelligence or fragments of human memory as monsters. 163 164
- Ray — A sentient Songbird Xeno whose human memories and intelligence remained intact despite her monster body. 163 164
- Xenos are not accepted by ordinary monsters and remain endangered even within the Dungeon. 164
- Ming Ge planned to eventually organize Xenos into a special Dungeon exploration unit, though he considered Ray too weak for immediate deployment. 164
Relationships
- Gaia — The Dungeon is Gaia's corpse and creation, formed after her exile and death. 203 206
- Ming Ge — Receives authority over the Dungeon from Gaia and alters its veins through the Magic Network. 206
- Uranus — Suppressed the Dungeon through prayer for a thousand years to protect Orario from its activity. 116 125
- Gods — The Dungeon bears deep hostility toward divine interference and can imprison or consume gods in its core layers. 143 203
- Adventurers — Treats them as invaders; they enter it to hunt monsters, collect magic stones, train, and pursue great deeds. 22 105
- Xenos — Functions as both their birthplace and “mother” through its reincarnation system. 164
Major Incidents
- Ancient divine interference — The Dungeon produces Antares as a god-killing monster after direct intervention by the gods. 143 181
- Evil gods' imprisonment — Ming Ge sends seven evil gods to Floor 97, triggering a Dungeon berserk state and trapping them beyond Heaven's reach. 111 112
- Monster-tide containment — Satella guards the entrance alone, using Shadow Garden to devour the monsters emerging during the heightened activity. 116 123
- Core-layer purge — Ming Ge kills Thanatos, Hypnos, Ikelos, and Dionysus in the Dungeon's core after the other three imprisoned gods have already perished. 202 203
- Transfer of authority — Gaia grants Ming Ge authority over the Dungeon, allowing him to reform its veins and restore it as a controlled monster-grinding environment. 206
