Background / History

The Three Pure Ones originate from the three streams of clear qi released when Pangu transformed into all things after opening Heaven and Earth. The qi settled on the Thirty-Six-Petaled Creation Azure Lotus in Kunlun Mountain's Creation Spring Eye, where it formed three embryos over tens of thousands of years. 9 11

Taiqing Laozi is born first, followed by Primordial Origin Heavenly Venerable and the High Pure One Tongtian. Each receives Pangu's lingering Heaven-Opening merit and an innate treasure. Taiqing urges his younger brothers to cultivate until their foundations stabilize, as ferocious beasts dominate the newly formed Primordial World. 11

Soon after, Shangqing attacks the fierce beast Chaos impulsively, drawing the brothers into a battle with Chaos and Qiongqi. Their inexperience leaves them defeated, and Luo Hou later confronts them after sensing Pangu's aura. Chu Yi drives Luo Hou away remotely before he can devour them. 12 13

Chu Yi reveals that he is Pangu's younger brother and therefore their uncle. He gives the Three Pure Ones the Nine-Turn Profound Origin Technique, warns them never to attend the Violet Firmament Palace, and directs them to unite innate sacred beings against the ferocious beasts. 13 14

They subsequently ally with the Twelve Ancestral Witches, whom they recognize as brothers through their shared origin in Pangu. Together, the fifteen fighters intervene in the Ferocious Beast Calamity, claim merit by defeating Taotie and Taowu, and join the battle against Beast Emperor Shen Ni. 17 21

After the conflict, the Three Pure Ones receive Mysterious Yellow Merit, enter seclusion at Kunlun Mountain, and later emerge to prepare for the approaching Dragon-Han Tribulation. 31 34

Taiqing is the eldest and most steady-minded of the three. He consistently prioritizes caution, cultivation, and the safety of his brothers, including attempting to avoid conflict with Chaos and Qiongqi before Shangqing provokes them. 11 12

Yuqing is deep-minded and cautious. He generally supports Taiqing's judgment, restrains Shangqing's rashness, and later recognizes that their uncle's guidance offers a path beyond the Heavenly Dao's planned cultivation system. 11 17 28 29

Shangqing is rebellious, impulsive, and highly combative. He attacks powerful enemies without fully judging the danger, but he is also resolute: when Luo Hou intends to kill the brothers, he argues that they should fight rather than beg. 11 13 His recklessness gradually coexists with strong loyalty toward both his brothers and the Twelve Ancestral Witches. 19 25
