Background / History

Before the creation of Heaven and Earth, Hongjun was the Dao-Qi God-Demon, formed from a strand of innate Dao-Qi shaped like an earthworm. Pangu destroyed his physical body during the God-Demon Slaying battle, but Hongjun's primordial spirit escaped into Chaos. After the Primordial World was created, he reconstituted his body there; an unseen influence erased part of his memories, after which he received the name Hongjun. 10

Hongjun traveled to Western Kunlun after sensing a destined opportunity and obtained a fragment of the shattered Fortune Jade Disc. Knowing that the disc recorded the Three Thousand Great Daos, he resolved to settle in Western Kunlun and seek its remaining fragments to improve his strength and pursue the Great Dao. 10 11

During the Ferocious Beast War, Hongjun formed an alliance with Daoist Yang Mei, Cosmic Patriarch, and Yin-Yang Ancestor to hunt fierce beasts for Xuanhuang Merit. Although he acknowledged that the merit could not be monopolized alone, he and his allies attempted to exclude the Three Pure Ones and Twelve Ancestral Witches from the battle against Beast Emperor Shen Ni. 16 18 19

After the Twelve Ancestral Witches summoned Pangu True Body, Hongjun planned to wait until they were exhausted and then capture them for their Pangu essence blood. He feared their connection to Pangu but remained willing to refine their blood to advance his own cultivation. 20 22

Appearance

Hongjun is described as wearing a Daoist robe after reforming his physical body in the Primordial World. 10

  • His original Dao-Qi form was described as earthworm-shaped before becoming the Dao-Qi God-Demon. 10
  • He carries and deploys fragments of the Fortune Jade Disc. 11 18

Personality

Hongjun is ambitious and acquisitive. Upon finding a Fortune Jade Disc fragment, he immediately focused on recovering every remaining piece and considered it a route to achieving the Great Dao. 11 He also pursues Xuanhuang Merit as a means of elevating his cultivation. 16

He is calculating and ruthless in conflict. During the battle with Shen Ni, he tried to deny merit to the Three Pure Ones and Twelve Ancestral Witches, then later sought to capture them and refine the Ancestral Witches' essence blood. 19 20 22 However, the gaps in his altered memories leave him confused and increasingly uneasy after Chu Yi secretly takes control of his body. 31 33
