Background
Before becoming Xuanyuan, he existed as Chong Zhen: the reincarnated Heaven-Mending Black Tortoise. Chong Zhen had lost the memories of his former life, but retained the merit earned from mending Heaven. Xuan You cultivated him in the Netherworld until he could enter reincarnation, while Xuan Yan arranged for his future path as the Human Emperor. 96 99
Xuanyuan was born to Shaodian and Fu Bao of the Bear Tribe after Fu Bao dreamed of a Northern Dipper star entering her womb. He spoke at birth, proclaimed his own name, and bore a faint golden mark between his brows. Three days later, Yan Zhen arrived, accepted him as a disciple, and promised to teach him both self-cultivation and statecraft. 107
Under Yan Zhen, Xuanyuan learned the Wondrous Origin Immortal Formula, military strategy, and the cultivation of the five grains. His success with millet, broomcorn millet, beans, wheat, and rice made his name known among the northern tribes and drew Shennong's attention as a potential successor. 107
Appearance
As a young adult, Xuanyuan is taller than an ordinary man, with broad shoulders, a solid build, resolute features, and a steady bearing beyond his age. A faint golden mark rests between his brows, reflecting his extraordinary birth and Human Emperor destiny. 107 109
- Could lift and wield a hundred-pound stone axe at three months old. 107
- Possesses eyes described as holding both youthful clarity and the depth of a thousand years after recovering part of his primordial-spirit power. 112
- Manifests a vast golden Black Tortoise phantom when drawing upon his former-life power and merit. 112 126
Personality
Xuanyuan is composed, observant, and highly practical. He assesses problems before acting, whether identifying the danger posed by the Jiuli Tribe, recognizing the disorder caused by barter, or refusing Heavenly Court and Dragon Clan intervention intended to claim Human Emperor merit. 109 118 122
He is also decisive under pressure. Shaodian's murder initially drives him into a reckless attack against Chiyou, but the recovery of his former-life memories gives him greater calm and resolve. He later reorganizes defeated tribes, creates a standing army, and continues the Zhuolu campaign despite heavy losses. 111 113 116 117
As a ruler, Xuanyuan values order without relying solely on coercion. He permits submitted tribes to preserve their local leadership and customs, while binding them to the Bear Tribe through the Grain Tribute System. After defeating Chiyou, he grants amnesty to Jiuli members who surrender. 117 126
