Naruto was a Konoha Academy student and the host of Kurama, the Nine-Tails. He met A Luo after A Luo entered the Nine-Tails' sealing space; Naruto promised to keep A Luo's survival secret and accepted his offer of cultivation guidance 34.

At the Academy, Naruto had once been disruptive, but became noticeably quiet and perpetually tired. Repeated medical examinations found no physical cause, while Kurama's cultivation was later revealed to have interfered with Naruto's ability to absorb spiritual energy 45 110.

Hiruzen Sarutobi personally ordered that Naruto be denied graduation after he missed an examination. Mizuki exploited Naruto's frustration by directing him to steal the Scroll of Seals, but Naruto became lost before reaching the arranged location and never opened the scroll 140 142.
