Background / History

Fury initially attempts to delay the Security Council's nuclear strike during the Battle of New York. The missile is nevertheless launched, and Shendu destroys it before it reaches Times Square. 4 6

After Steve Rogers presents evidence suggesting Chitauri infiltration, Fury accepts that S.H.I.E.L.D. may contain a mole and orders an internal review. He regards Valmont—the identity used by Shendu—as a potentially valuable ally because of his intervention during the Battle of New York. 21

Fury becomes increasingly dependent on Valmont's apparent loyalty and power.
