Battle of New York

Tony appears as Iron Man during the Chitauri invasion, attacking Shendu after the newly animated dragon appears over Manhattan. He later destroys a Leviathan threatening the group in the substation and questions Shendu about his origin and intentions. 1 5

When the nuclear missile approaches Times Square, Tony initially intends to intercept it. Shendu instead destroys it by animating nearby wreckage, and Tony acknowledges that the intervention prevented a far greater death toll. 6

Investigation of Shendu and the S.H.I.E.L.D. Mole

Tony detects unusual energy signatures around Quill and the transformed agent, then reveals that he took Shendu’s blood while Shendu was unconscious. 18

After identifying Shendu’s unusual biology, Tony agrees to keep the Monkey Talisman secret in exchange for continued blood samples and assistance cleaning up the S.H.I.E.L.D. base. 19 He subsequently investigates the Shadow Legion darts and warns Steve that someone may be using Shendu as a weapon against S.H.I.E.L.D. 21

Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Regime

Tony recognizes that Shendu is using his identity to enter S.H.I.E.L.D., but does not immediately expose him. 31 When Fury summons Tony to surrender Stark Industries’ energy technology, Tony openly reveals his immunity to the Mind Stone’s influence through his arc-reactor-powered body. 38 39

Shendu uses threats against Tony’s loved ones to secure his apparent cooperation. While being escorted away, Tony accepts Shendu’s offer of an alliance against Fury, though he remains distrustful of Shendu’s motives. 39

Tony publicly supports Fury’s control over the new energy technology, then secretly provides General Ross and military officers evidence of Fury’s manipulation and a plan to oppose S.H.I.E.L.D. 42

Conflict with Shendu

Tony intercepts Fury’s missiles targeting Stark Industries, exposing his betrayal of Fury’s regime. 43 After Shendu activates a global nuclear-launch countdown, Tony deduces that nuclear weapons remain a meaningful threat to Shendu and that Shendu cannot control every electronic system. 44

At Stark Tower, Tony ambushes Shendu with hidden rocket launchers, the Iron Legion, pressure-sensor detection, and the Dragon Blood Factor. 45 46 Shendu counters by using invisibility, fire manipulation, and the Mind Stone to grant life to Stark Tower itself, overwhelming Tony’s defenses. 46

Tony is ultimately knocked down by Hulk, whose mind Shendu has altered, and is captured alive by Shendu’s Shadow Ninjas after his armor is destroyed. 47
