Background / History

Shendu was one of the Eight Demons and once ruled China and, by his own account, all of Asia. After being sealed for a thousand years, he existed as a “Ming Dynasty stone dragon” exhibit in the Hong Kong Museum of History until a flash of white light transported him to the Battle of New York. 1

He arrived as a stone statue animated only by the Mouse Talisman. Unable to withstand the battle’s major threats, he concealed his identity, feigned fear and helplessness, and sought Captain America’s protection under the nickname “Little Dragon.” 1 2

Appearance

Shendu’s natural form is a compact Eastern dragon with dark green scales and a ferocious, five-clawed dragon head. In human form, he commonly adopts the appearance of Valmont, one of his former subordinates. 1 20

Personality

Shendu is calculating, patient, and highly manipulative. He deliberately presents himself as harmless when weak, tailoring his behavior to exploit Captain America’s compassion, Quill’s loneliness, Fury’s ambition, and Tony Stark’s need for information. 2 10 35 37

His apparent cooperation is usually instrumental. He treats trust as a resource to cultivate and discard, repeatedly concealing his demonic identity and his pursuit of the talismans until revealing himself gives him the greatest advantage. 14 27 33

Despite his cruelty and ambition, Shendu can show restraint when circumstances demand it. He suppresses his urge to seize the Monkey Talisman directly, aids Quill against the rampaging boar, and initially saves civilians from the New York missile because survival and a stable foothold are more useful than open hostility. 6 8 12

After sensing the Monkey Talisman on Peter Quill, Shendu engineers a friendship with him and accompanies him to Missouri. Infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Using the Valmont identity, Shadowkhan, and transformation powers, Shendu manipulates S.H.I.E.L.D.’s internal mole crisis and lures Natasha into a trap. Once she learns the truth, he abandons his harmless persona and introduces himself openly as Shendu. 20 27

Theft and Absorption of the Mind Stone
