Background / History
Sun Wukong first rebelled after the Heavenly Court assigned him the lowly post of Horse Groomer. Believing that the court had humiliated him, he returned to Flower-Fruit Mountain, raised the banner of “Great Sage Equal to Heaven,” and gathered the other six Great Sages and their demon forces beneath it. He fought the Heavenly Court’s forces, including Nezha, without a decisive result in their sixty-exchange duel. 3 6 7 20
At Flower-Fruit Mountain, Wukong initially rejected Venus Star Lord’s attempt at negotiation with violence. Su Yuan later gained his trust by posing as a fellow disciple of Patriarch Bodhi and explaining that Wukong’s former appointment had supposedly resulted from Martial Star Lord’s slander. Tempted by promises of genuine authority, benefits, and advancement, Wukong agreed to ascend to Heaven. 20 22 23
Though eager to accept the offer, Wukong was troubled by leaving his six sworn brothers behind. He assisted Su Yuan’s plan to recruit them by transforming Su Yuan into his likeness, hiding inside Su Yuan’s ear, and using his hairs to create black-robed illusionary “demon kings” that pressured the real Great Sages into competing for Heavenly Court terms. 24 25 30
After the recruitment, Wukong became a familiar figure in Heavenly Court circles and received respectful treatment from senior immortals because of his victories in the lower realm. He later moved in with Su Yuan while awaiting the formal bestowal of his title, joined Su Yuan’s Western Buddhist Realm trip by hiding in his ear, and fought the Golden-Winged Roc, Blue-Haired Lion, and Six-Tusked White Elephant at Little Western Heaven. 33 38 42
Appearance
Sun Wukong is depicted as a monkey-faced warrior with formidable demonic presence. When seated in Water-Curtain Cave, he wears full regalia befitting the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 19 20
- Linked Gold Armor. 19 20
- Phoenix-Wing Purple-Gold Crown. 19 20
- Lotus-Silk Cloud-Walking Shoes. 19 20
- Furry face and “thunder-god mouth.” 24
- Golden eyes and a restless habit of scratching his ears and cheeks. 23 25
Personality
Wukong is proud, direct, energetic, and deeply sensitive to perceived disrespect. His resentment toward the Horse Groomer appointment stems not only from the post’s low status, but from the humiliation he felt before his sworn brothers. 22
He enjoys excitement, mischief, combat, drinking, and lively company. He readily embraces Su Yuan’s elaborate schemes when they promise chaos or entertainment, yet becomes bored when required to sit still or appreciate formal scenery. 23 25 33 39
Despite his impulsiveness, Wukong values sworn brotherhood and family responsibility. He hesitated to leave the Six Great Sages behind, helped recruit them rather than abandoning them, and reluctantly took charge of Red Boy during the return journey to Heaven. 24 30 31
