Background

Three thousand five hundred years before the story, Su Yuan transmigrated from Blue Star into a brutal cultivation world. He spent five hundred years cultivating, swindling, and fighting his way across a Lesser Thousand World before ascending to the Heavenly Court—an event celebrated by many of those he had previously antagonized. 1

His ascension examination recorded him as having lowest-grade bone quality. The Heavenly Court assigned him to the Infrastructure Office, where he spent roughly three millennia rising from a low-level construction worker to deputy project manager for the Southern Heavenly Gate expansion. 1

Su Yuan’s advancement depended heavily on wealth rather than innate talent. After securing reconstruction funding, he used a spirit-stone-consuming system to force his cultivation from early Celestial Immortal to peak Celestial Immortal, then later reached Origin Immortal. 5 11

Personality

Su Yuan is calculating, opportunistic, and highly conscious of hierarchy. He maintains a courteous exterior even while assessing how to shift blame, gain leverage, or profit from a crisis; Chief Engineer Wang He’s disappearance during the Southern Heavenly Gate incident became an opportunity for Su Yuan to remove a rival. 1 2

He is also adaptable under pressure. Rather than confront stronger figures directly, Su Yuan uses flattery, procedural rules, carefully staged incentives, and intermediaries. He recruited Sun Wukong by posing as a fellow disciple of Patriarch Bodhi, then used contracts and contraband goods to divide the other Great Sages’ interests. 22 23 26 27

Despite his greed, Su Yuan recognizes the value of relationships. He treats Venus Star Lord as both benefactor and master, cultivates ties with powerful immortals such as Ink Qilin and Cao Bao, and takes practical responsibility for Red Boy’s placement in Heaven. 6 31 37

Abilities & Skills

Spirit-Stone Cultivation System

Su Yuan possesses a system that directly converts spirit stones into cultivation progress.

  • Spent 400 million spirit stones to rise from early Celestial Immortal to peak Celestial Immortal. 5
  • Required another 200 million spirit stones for an upgrade from peak Celestial Immortal to early Origin Immortal. 5
  • Estimated that reaching Quasi-Saint through this method would require one hundred thousand trillion spirit stones. 5
  • His cultivation foundation is extremely poor; he openly lacks conventional spellcraft and relies on purchased cultivation and a few escape techniques. 24 25

Political Manipulation and Negotiation

Su Yuan excels at turning bureaucracy, reputation, and internal rivalries into leverage.

  • Manipulated Wang He into rushing ahead at the Southern Heavenly Gate by promising him a promotion, leaving Wang exposed to Sun Wukong’s attack. 2
  • Preserved Growth Heavenly King’s face by proposing the demolition of the damaged gate, then used the crisis to seek a larger reconstruction budget. 2
  • Used Sun Wukong’s history with Patriarch Bodhi to convince him that the Heavenly Court wished to treat him with respect. 22 23
  • Controlled the Great Sages’ recruitment through withdrawal penalties, staged audience questions, and rewards tailored to their armies’ needs. 26 27 28

Project Management and Commercial Operations

Su Yuan combines infrastructure experience with aggressive financial planning.

  • Led the Southern Heavenly Gate Project Department’s accelerated reconstruction campaign and pushed workers to build while designs and formation testing were still underway. 3 4
  • Secured project funding through Cao Bao, then retained and diverted portions of the funds for cultivation and personal use. 5 8
  • Organized the smuggling of Milky Way Navy heavy armor and other Heavenly Court-controlled goods to the lower realm. 16 27 28
  • Helped develop a tobacco trade between Accumulated Thunder Mountain and the Heavenly Court, including the “Benefit the Group” and “Zhonghua” brands. 34 47 48

Administrative Analysis

Su Yuan applies a personal “Office Power-Content Formula” to evaluate political appointments.

  • Rated offices according to command authority, influence, fiscal control, and rank constraints. 45
  • Identified Deputy Director of the Integrated Three Offices under the Heavenly Court Office as the strongest option among Xu Jingyang’s proposed positions. 46
  • Investigated the rumors targeting Sun Wukong and deduced cooperation between Martial Star Lord and Heavenly King Li. 46 47

Equipment / Items

  • Storage pouch — Used to carry spirit stones, gifts, liquor, documents, pills, and contraband. 5 6 43

  • Xu Jingyang — Venus Star Lord’s associate and Su Yuan’s political ally; cooperates with him on recruitment profits and appointment strategy. 23 32 46

  • Sun Wukong — Recruited by Su Yuan through deception, then becomes a close associate, temporary housemate, and key link in his cross-realm smuggling network. 22 23 38

  • Red Boy — A demon child whose Heavenly Court placement Su Yuan actively manages, including seeking Ink Qilin as a possible patron. 31 32 34
  • Liu Yaoqing — Subordinate and chief engineer in the Southern Heavenly Gate Project Department; carries out Su Yuan’s orders despite recognizing their burdens on the staff. 5 8
  • Wang He — Rival chief engineer whom Su Yuan manipulates into taking responsibility during the Southern Heavenly Gate crisis. 1 2
  • Cao Bao — Infrastructure finance official under Zhao Gongming. Su Yuan bribed him to release project funds; Cao later intervened to remove a seal placed on Su Yuan’s immortal essence. 5 37

Story Role / Major Arcs

Southern Heavenly Gate Reconstruction

Su Yuan begins as the deputy project manager of the Southern Heavenly Gate expansion. When Sun Wukong damages the gate, Su Yuan avoids the immediate danger, manipulates Wang He into becoming the apparent responsible party, and exploits Growth Heavenly King’s embarrassment to expand the reconstruction budget. 1 2

He drives an accelerated reconstruction campaign, secures funding through Cao Bao, and uses both project money and workers’ “risk deposits” to finance his cultivation. 3 4 5 8

Pacification Recruitment Mission

After Venus Star Lord is appointed to handle Sun Wukong’s pacification, Su Yuan seeks a role in the mission. When Wenqu Star Lord rigs a recruitment post in favor of Dou Yin, Su Yuan maneuvers Ink Qilin into helping remove Dou Yin from contention. 7 12 13

Su Yuan later helps steal twelve Unfixed Flying Boats intended for recruitment rewards, then uses the fleet to move contraband and restricted Heavenly Court goods. 14 16 17

Recruitment of the Great Sages

Su Yuan persuades Sun Wukong to return to Heaven by exploiting the monkey’s connection to Patriarch Bodhi and promising him status, respect, and authority. 21 22 23

Assigned to recruit the other six Great Sages, he follows Venus Star Lord’s “divide and rule” advice. He pressures the demon kings through regulations, then sells them heavy armor, Spirit-Nourishing Leaves, and other scarce Heavenly Court goods in exchange for cooperation agreements and recognition of Heavenly Court authority. 23 26 27 28 30

Western Buddhist Realm Exchange

Su Yuan joins Emperor Wenchang’s cultural exchange mission as an Infrastructure Office representative. In the Buddhist Realm, his discussions with Ananda and Kasyapa lead the Western Sect to suspect he is a significant “Buddha child.” 35 38 39 40

He seeks the Golden-Winged Roc after accepting the Roc Demon King’s request and payment to help the Roc’s descendants. His intervention is interpreted by Manjushri as loyalty to a promise, causing Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Arhats to shower him with gifts and invitations. 41 43

Heavenly Court Faction Politics

After returning to Heaven, Su Yuan becomes increasingly involved in factional maneuvering. He evaluates offices for Venus Star Lord and Xu Jingyang, investigates rumors undermining Sun Wukong, and plans to profit from the political disorder expected from the Great Sage’s next disruption in Heaven. 44 45 46 47

Notable Quotes

“I didn't spend all this money to compete with you fairly!” 5

Trivia

  • Su Yuan’s ascension intake recorded his bone quality as lowest grade, despite his eventual rise to the Immortal Realm. 1

  • Buddhist observers initially believed Su Yuan possessed a peak Primordial Unity Golden Immortal external incarnation; the apparent incarnation was actually Sun Wukong acting from a streak of golden light. 41 42
