Background / History
Gengar first accompanies Jiang Jing as a Gastly. It quickly becomes attached to him and shows a protective side by keeping a mysterious Pokémon Egg safe. Jiang Jing raises its Talent to Four-Star and Level 15 before its evolution into Haunter. 122 137
As Haunter, it trains Night Shade to an exceptionally fast 0.8-second formation and 0.2-second release. It later reaches Five-Star Talent and Level 27 while holding an Eviolite. 137 167
At Level 29, Haunter faces Aggron in a deliberate high-pressure clash rather than a battle it is expected to win. The strain triggers its evolution into Gengar, granting it legs, a tail, Cursed Body, and a wider movepool including Shadow Ball, Toxic, Venoshock, and Poison Jab. 177
After entering the Spirit World through a rift it opens itself, Gengar becomes increasingly connected to Ghost-type environments. It helps Jiang Jing explore the Dark Forest, where the level-89 Gengar leader asks Jiang Jing to recover Pokémon captured by Team Rocket, including one of the leader's descendants. 299 302
Jiang Jing eventually succeeds in returning the captured Pokémon. In gratitude, the Gengar leader rewards him with Gengarite, allowing Gengar to Mega Evolve. 350 352
Appearance
Gengar is a large, deep-purple Ghost/Poison Pokémon with a round, soft-looking body. Despite gaining legs after evolving, it commonly floats in the air. Its red eyes, upward-curving smile, and thorn-like back protrusions give it a mischievous but ominous appearance. 177
- Deep-purple body with a short, pointed tail. 177
- Red eyes and a constant faint grin. 177
- Several thorn-like protrusions along its back. 177
- Often described as chubby, soft, and adorable despite its Ghost-type aura. 177
- Mega Gengar has spikes across its body, a purplish-red lower half, a spiked tail, and a yellow coin-like object embedded in its forehead. 352
Personality
Gengar is cheerful, affectionate, and highly prank-loving. It happily hugs Jiang Jing, seeks praise after demonstrating new moves, and is thrilled by the applause it receives after winning battles. 177 352
It is also smug and provocative in battle. It makes Scary Faces, taunts opponents, and once raised its middle finger at a Crobat to provoke it. 178 208
In the Spirit World, Gengar is far less forgiving of genuine hostility. When a former underling, Banette, attacked with killing intent, Gengar immediately retaliated and destroyed it with Will-O-Wisp. 403
Abilities & Skills
Ghost- and Poison-Type Energy Manipulation
Gengar can draw upon Ghost- and Poison-type energy, with its Six-Star Talent substantially improving the speed at which it gathers ambient energy. 302
- Can create an icy Ghost-type aura that lowers the surrounding temperature. 178 332
- Its strength and energy control rise sharply in Ghost-energy-rich environments such as the Spirit World. 350 403
- Gains Proficient Ghost and Poison Nature Control by Level 74. 486
Cursed Body
After evolving, Gengar's Ability changes from Levitate to Cursed Body. 177
- An opponent's move may enter a disabled state after striking Gengar, temporarily preventing its reuse. 177
- Cursed Body remains its listed Ability through its Six-Star stage. 302 321
Will-O-Wisp
Will-O-Wisp is Gengar's signature move and one of its most developed techniques, reaching Specialized mastery immediately after its evolution and Transcendent Mastery by Level 54. 177 321
- Creates numerous purple-red ghostly flames that can pursue targets from different angles. 215 333
- Burns opponents and can remain attached even when they attempt to evade. 215
- Can be boosted by the Life Orb into tri-colored flames with greatly increased power. 208
- Its flames allow Gengar to sense targets such as Gourgeist even after they use Phantom Force. 219
- Gengar develops a variation that assimilates an opponent's Fire Spin, severely damaging Centiskorch in a simultaneous knockout. 288
- Defeats a level-65 Banette in a single strike during Qingming Festival. 403
Shadow Ball and Shadow Explosion
Shadow Ball is Gengar's principal direct Ghost-type attack and reaches Transcendent Mastery by Level 54. 177 321
- Condenses Ghost-type energy into a projectile whose power increases with greater compression time. 288
- Can darken and chill the entire battlefield, creating conditions favorable to Gengar. 305
- Combines Shadow Ball with Hex to create Shadow Explosion, which defeats Mega Alakazam. 558
Hex
Hex is one of Gengar's strongest refined Ghost-type techniques, reaching Transcendent Mastery by Level 54. 321
- Exploits opponents already afflicted by conditions such as burn or poison. 467
- Can be fired as a wide bombardment of purple energy spheres. 485
- Forms part of its standard finishing combination with Will-O-Wisp and Shadow Ball. 321 489
Hypnosis and Nightmare
Gengar uses Hypnosis for both incapacitation and mental control. 321 407
- Can put multiple targets to sleep, including Chen Shuling and her Pokémon when aided by the level-89 Gengar leader. 350
- Can manipulate minds through Hypnosis, though doing so is difficult. 407
- Nightmare damages opponents who are already asleep over time. 198
Spirit World Travel
Gengar can tear open rifts leading to the Spirit World. 299 403
- First opens a passage instinctively after absorbing Spell Tag energy. 299
- Can enter the Spirit World independently and later opens gateways for Jiang Jing. 299 403
- Pulls Rhyperior into the Spirit World, where it drains the Pokémon's life energy until it dies. 391
Mega Evolution
Gengar Mega Evolves through resonance between its Gengarite and Jiang Jing's Key Stone. 350 352
- Mega Evolution raises it from Level 56 to combat power equivalent to Level 59 during its first transformation. 352
- Its Ability changes to Shadow Tag. 352
- Mega Evolution initially drains its stamina severely, forcing it to revert shortly after transforming. 352
- By later battles, Mega Gengar is equivalent to Level 84 and can defeat Mega Alakazam. 557 558
Z-Moves
Gengar learns Poisonium Z's Poison-type Z-Move, Acid Downpour. 402
- Produces corrosive purple acid rain capable of melting rock into sludge. 402
- A single use consumes nearly half of Gengar's stamina before further training. 402
- Later possesses Transcendent Mastery in both Acid Downpour and the Ghost-type Z-Move Never-Ending Nightmare. 486

Trivia
