Background

During the Great Change, countless Pokémon fell from the sky and rapidly hatched after reaching the ground. Over the following ten years, the world expanded to nearly ten times its former size. The sudden arrival of Pokémon destabilized nations and contributed to widespread conflict. 2

Humans initially lacked the means to resist Pokémon, relying on muskets and cannons while much of the expanded world—forests, plateaus, oceans, deserts, and basins—remained under Pokémon control. The Pokémon League taught nations how to capture Pokémon, allowing humanity to expand its territory over the following centuries. 3

Pokémon coexist closely with people in settled areas. Students commonly bring them to school, and No. 8 High School does not forbid Pokémon from living in dormitories. 2

Human Interaction

• Students intending to become Trainers may choose the Spirit Studies track in their sophomore year; no academic threshold is required for entry. 3
• Pokémon are kept as pets, trained for combat, used for wilderness exploration, and deployed during major disturbances. 4 158
• The Pokémon Association certifies Trainers through Badge assessments and organizes Trainers to suppress large-scale Pokémon incidents beyond ordinary police capacity. 158
• Specialized Pokémon food ranges from standard all-purpose meals to attribute-specific and species-specific formulas; Pokéblocks and enhancement materials are also used to support growth. 7
• Some protected areas permit captures only under defined agreements. Dragon Valley, for example, grants limited entry slots and permits captures through battle or persuasion, while forbidding underhanded methods. 293

Classification and Growth

Evolution

Pokémon can evolve naturally through growth or through special conditions and materials. Evolution Stones are divided into Low-grade, Intermediate, Advanced, and Premium grades; low-grade stones may reduce a Pokémon's talent, while advanced stones can improve it. 136

Pokémon with high aptitude can begin battle training almost immediately after hatching. The caution against early training primarily applies to ordinary Pokémon. 198

Mega Evolution

Mega Evolution allows a Pokémon to surpass its normal limits and undergo a qualitative increase in life essence and power. It requires resonance between a Trainer's Key Stone and a Pokémon's Mega Stone, with their bond serving as the medium. 347

• Z-Moves — Powerful techniques learned through specialized training; Metagross learned Corkscrew Crash and Twinkle Tackle under Master Lin Tianyi. 399

Habitats and Ecology

Pokémon inhabit both human settlements and vast wilderness regions. Schools may host species such as Pikachu, Vulpix, Caterpie, Butterfree, Oddish, Bellsprout, and numerous Flying- and Water-type Pokémon alongside their student Trainers. 2

Wild areas are significantly more dangerous. Jiang Jing's wilderness training encounters Pokémon above Level 50, while Dragon Valley alone is estimated to contain nearly ten thousand Dragon-type Pokémon or Pokémon with Dragon bloodlines. 241 293

Some species possess distinctive social structures and territorial behaviors:

• Throh train in groups of five; members that fall behind discard their belts and leave the group. 317
• Pyroar groups are led by males with the largest fiery manes, while females protect the young. 201
• Passimian carry hard-shelled fruit as weapons and use leaves attached with saliva to identify their troop. 325
• Klefki collect favored keys for decades and may protect important keys with their lives. 324

• Great Change — Pokémon descended into the world, reshaping geography, human civilization, and international politics. The Pokémon League emerged from the resulting conflicts and became the central international organization. 2 3
• Regieleki Incident — Regieleki awakened beneath Galaxy Square and overwhelmed the Pokémon Association's response. Jiang Jing used Telepathy to persuade it to stop fighting and leave the city. 347
• Neon Country Disaster — Water-type Pokémon attacked Neon Country amid the awakening of Kyogre and Groudon. Rayquaza ultimately injured and calmed both Legendary Pokémon, ending the crisis. 562 577
• SQ City Attack — A damaged secret realm released powerful wild Pokémon into SQ City before Giratina appeared and caused extensive destruction. Jiang Jing's team later drove Giratina away. 661 663
