Hueco Mundo is a desolate realm of white sand beneath a heavy gray sky. Its atmosphere contains an exceptionally high concentration of Reishi, strengthening the abilities of both Hollows and Soul Reapers within it; Yato's Hadō #4 was approximately one-third stronger upon arrival. 21

Hollow Society

Hueco Mundo operates under a brutal survival-of-the-fittest order. Devouring other souls and evolving are the dominant instincts of its Hollow inhabitants, and higher-ranking Menos Grande commonly control territory or prey on weaker beings. 26 93 98

Despite this hierarchy, not all Hollows conform to Barragan's violent model.

• Some higher-ranking Menos Grande form groups, share food, defend companions, and risk their lives for one another. 70
• A small number live as ascetics, refusing both cannibalism and indiscriminate killing while travelling Hueco Mundo to spread their beliefs. 70
• Harribel and Nelliel are noted as unusual high-ranking Menos Grande who treat subordinates as people rather than expendable resources. 98

Barragan's Rule

Barragan is the de facto ruler of Hueco Mundo and resides in Las Noches. Most intelligent Menos Grande operate outward from the palace, dividing territory under his broader influence. 93

His authority is contested by powerful Vasto Lordes, particularly Harribel, who repeatedly refuses to submit to him. Barragan nevertheless retains control through overwhelming strength, fear, and appeals to the Hollow instinct to devour and evolve. 23 93

Relations with Soul Society

Hueco Mundo is a recurring battlefield and training ground for the Soul Society.

• Shin'ō Academy formerly sent students into Hueco Mundo for seven-day live-combat exercises, requiring them to kill Hollows before returning through the Senkaimon. 20
• The exercise was highly dangerous. Moritora Shiba died there three years before Yato's visit, and another student, Shintora Shiba, was confirmed to have been devoured by an Adjuchas. 20 80
• Yoruichi Shihōin cleared the academy landing zone in advance to keep Menos Grande from immediately threatening the students. 20

• Shin'ō Academy exercise: Yato enters Hueco Mundo as a sixth-year student, experiences its Reishi-enhanced environment, and hunts Hollows independently. He later ventures beyond the training boundary in search of Menos Grande. 20 21 22
• Harribel's escape: While disguised as an Adjuchas, Yato becomes involved in Harribel's flight from Barragan's followers. The pursuit demonstrates the realm's ruthless internal politics and ends with Yato helping Harribel escape rather than killing her. 23 24 26 27
• Punitive expedition: Soul Society plans a large-scale campaign centered on the 11th Division, intending to exterminate Hollows across a wide radius in response to Barragan's provocations. The campaign expands after Kenpachi Giganjō exceeds the planned battle zone. 34 38

• Hueco Mundo's white sand requires specially made sandals for academy trainees, as ordinary straw sandals allow sand through their gaps. 20
• Hollows commonly believe that devouring Soul Reapers accelerates their evolution, though Yato considers the belief that doing so fills the void in their hearts to be false. 69
• Las Noches during Barragan's rule has no dome or roof; Barragan considers the crescent moon the only thing that should hang above him. 93
