Background

Yato was a transmigrator from Earth who was born in Rukongai. Before receiving a Soul-Cutter Sword, he was already accompanied by the red-armored girl later known as Scarlet Eye; only Yato could see or sense her. He adopted the Uchiha name and used his foreknowledge of major events to orient himself in Soul Society's uncertain timeline. 1 8

Initially a resident of Eastern Rukongai's Flower Withers District, Yato earned special admission to Shin'ō Academy through his spiritual pressure, durable soul, and moral evaluation. The Horiuchi Family attempted to seize his admission notice through intimidation, assassins, and torture. Yato refused to surrender it, killed the ten Kusajishi assassins sent after him, and later awakened Scarlet Eye after an Asauchi was driven through his chest in the Horiuchi dungeon. 1 2 5 8 9

His first Shikai enabled him to kill Horiuchi Yosuke, Horiuchi Yuma, and Ninth Division Seventeenth Seat Koizumi Kentaro. He concealed his involvement in the destruction of the Horiuchi estate, recovered at Ichimaru Gin and Matsumoto Rangiku's home, and subsequently enrolled at Shin'ō Academy. 9 10 11 12

At the academy, Scarlet Eye was identified as the former sword of Moritora Shiba. Yato rapidly became one of the academy's foremost students, skipped four grades alongside his roommate Byakuya Kuchiki, and graduated after two years with exceptional marks in Zanjutsu, Hakuda, Hohō, and Kidō. 13 19 33

Yato initially appears as a handsome, slender boy of about fourteen or fifteen with black hair, black eyes, and a faint habitual smile. 1

He presents himself as casual and approachable around friends, particularly Byakuya, Gin, and Rangiku. Beneath that demeanor, he is highly secretive and calculating, hiding the Horiuchi massacre, cooperating with Aizen's Hollowfication experiments, and pursuing the power needed to reshape the world according to his own will. 11 30 32 37

Yato can be ruthless toward enemies and obstacles, but he repeatedly chooses to protect allies at personal risk. He refuses to abandon Harribel in Hueco Mundo and later returns to aid Unohana despite understanding the danger of intervening against Barragan. 26 106
