Background / History

Zabuza is detected near Team 7 during the Land of Waves mission as an S-rank rogue ninja, classified by the system as jonin-level and carrying the Kubikiribōchō. He identifies Kakashi Hatake as the Copy Ninja, throws his blade at Uchiha Sen, and blankets the battlefield in thick mist to isolate the team. Sen's automatic barrier repels the thrown sword, leaving Zabuza unsettled by an opponent whose chakra he cannot sense. 8

While attempting to exploit the mist and attack Tazuna, Zabuza is caught by Sen's concealed approach. Sen drags him into the ground, humiliates him with repeated slipper strikes, and uses Rinnegan-derived Repulsion and Gravity techniques to toss him through trees. Haku intervenes with senbon needles, staging Zabuza's apparent death and taking him away while he still shows signs of life. 9 10

Zabuza returns to the bridge alongside Haku and gains the upper hand by threatening Sakura and Tazuna. His confidence collapses when Sen receives temporary Hashirama-level power and unleashes Deep Forest Emergence. The Wood Release destroys Haku's Crystal Ice Mirrors, binds Zabuza, and drains his chakra until he can no longer resist. 11 12

After Gato's defeat, Zabuza and Haku are captured rather than executed. Zabuza accepts his apparent fate and asks Sen to look after Haku; instead, both become part of Sen's group. Hiruzen formally assigns the three to the Hokage-controlled ANBU Special Operations Squad, with Sen as leader. 13 14

Life under Sen changes Zabuza's role from feared rogue ninja to reluctant attendant, guard, and field operative. On a reconnaissance mission toward the Land of Iron, Zabuza detects Root's pursuit squad before it attacks. He confronts Tenzō directly, battles him while Sen handles the other Root members, and narrowly avoids Sen's massive fireball when it is fired toward Tenzō. 22 24 25

His initial pride and bloodlust are repeatedly undermined by Sen's overwhelming and erratic strength. Although he is deeply frustrated by being called “Zoro,” used as a cook, and forced to manage Sen's unpredictable behavior, he adapts to the new arrangement rather than abandoning it. 14 19 25

Zabuza remains protective of Haku and increasingly concerned for Sen's safety despite his complaints.
