Background / History

Tsunade earned major wartime recognition for healing wounded shinobi, saving lives, and fighting on the battlefield. After the Third Shinobi World War left the Senju Clan with less than one-tenth of its former combat strength, she dissolved the clan and had its surviving members live as civilians in the Hidden Leaf Village. She later regarded this decision as a failure of leadership. 37 45

She spent many years away from the village with Shizune, largely devoting herself to gambling and drinking. The deaths of Dan Kato and Nawaki Senju remained a profound wound; Orochimaru's promise to revive them briefly tempted her despite his plan to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village. 31 32 34
