Background / History
Rhodes Island emerged from the remnants of Babel following Theresa's death. Led by Kal'tsit, the survivors made an excavated mobile warship their base and established a new organization dedicated to continuing Theresa's final wish: aiding more Infected and enabling their peaceful coexistence with others 235.
Unlike Babel, Rhodes Island presents itself openly as a mobile medical company. Its routes and docking schedules are deliberately publicized so Infected people can find the landship and seek treatment, rather than fearing discovery by local authorities 70. Its mobile base travels between nations while maintaining local offices and partnerships 135 241.
Early contact with the Reunion Movement led Rhodes Island to acquire the production method for a highly effective Originium Inhibitor. Logos brought both a sample and the formula back for Kal'tsit's analysis after receiving them from Suika 59.
Mission and Operations
- Researches Oripathy and develops medicines that control its progression rather than cure it outright 129 297.
- Treats Infected patients aboard its landship and through regional facilities; its offices refer patients requiring comprehensive examinations to better-equipped hospitals or the main ship 274.
- Employs field operators who can answer distress calls, escort patients, distribute medicine, gather intelligence, and assist communities in crisis 113 260.
- Maintains armed operators and elite operators because a mobile organization independent of any nation requires sufficient force to protect itself and its patients 130.
- Screens potential external partners for prejudice against Sarkaz and the Infected; Rhodes Island will not actively cooperate with organizations that reject them 244.
- Works with governments and local authorities to settle displaced people when taking large refugee populations aboard the landship is impractical 326.
Medical Work
Originium Inhibitor
Rhodes Island's new Inhibitor was recreated from the formula obtained through Logos. During its effective period, it can keep an Infected person's Originium concentration at or below ten percent and maintain the Originium in an inert state, preventing further growth 59.
- Initial trials were conducted with consent from severely ill patients whose conditions could no longer be controlled by existing medication 77.
- Severely ill patients improved from severe to moderate infection within a week and stabilized; some Originium particles were expelled naturally 77.
- Operators using Originium Arts within their physical limits did not reactivate the inert particles; even when activation occurred through powerful Arts, the particles soon returned to inactivity 77.
- The treatment is not a complete cure, but regular medication can reduce Originium concentration enough for Infected people to live stable daily lives 297.
- After the medicine entered use at Rhodes Island, its reported Oripathy mortality rate fell to zero 77.
- The formula's records guarantee at least six months of safety per injection, requiring long-term observation before final conclusions could be made 78.
- Rhodes Island replaced its previous, less effective inhibitor with the new medicine and planned expanded production because of its low cost and strong results 81.
Distribution Practices
- Rhodes Island supplies approved organizations with affordable Inhibitor, though production capacity remains limited 273.
- Medicine shipments are commonly kept secret because Inhibitor cargo has attracted robberies and price exploitation 273.
- Small offices retain only emergency stocks, assess recipients' circumstances, and administer medicine on-site to prevent resale for profit 274.
Organization
Medical Department
The Medical Department holds the highest standing within Rhodes Island. Its importance stems both from Kal'tsit's role as the long-term manager and department head, and from the fact that medical work is the foundation of Rhodes Island's growth and international relationships 254.
Operators
Rhodes Island describes its relationship with operators as a partnership rather than forced employment. Operators may maintain outside work, refuse unreasonable assignments, and act independently while still supporting Rhodes Island's goals 81 243.
- Members receive comprehensive physical examinations, combat-training advice, and regular Inhibitor access if they are Infected 81.
- Field operators such as Suika can travel freely while using Rhodes Island offices and resources, provided they assist when able to answer a distress call 113.
- Recruitment includes background checks and evaluation by Human Resources, particularly for politically sensitive candidates 236.
Elite Operators
Elite Operators are among Rhodes Island's highest-ranking personnel, though medical personnel remain more institutionally respected 254 273.
- Their orders take priority in combat situations, and they can access restricted areas of the landship 254 258.
- They receive unconditional support from Rhodes Island offices and safehouses, along with reimbursed examinations and medical expenses 254.
- Elite status may be awarded to personnel who are not permanently stationed aboard the landship if they have made exceptional contributions 254.
- Only Amiya and Kal'tsit are stated to have authority to deploy Elite Operators 273.
Facilities and Presence
- Mobile landship — Rhodes Island's conspicuous primary base, containing medical facilities, living quarters, training spaces, a deck, and operational infrastructure 78 233.
- Regional offices — Local facilities that provide contact points, emergency medicine, and support for field operators; an office existed in Little Hill County 59 272.
- Lungmen office and hospital project — Following a strategic partnership with Lungmen, Rhodes Island received a permanent site intended to become a small hospital pending authorization, renovation, and staffing 241.
- Lungmen local base — A facility large enough to house more than one hundred visiting Rhodes Island personnel, with a courtyard training ground 233.
Relationships
- Babel — Rhodes Island's predecessor; it was formed from Babel's remaining members after Theresa's death 235.
- Amiya — Rhodes Island's leader and a central decision-maker in major operations, including the Chernobog rescue 221.
- Kal'tsit — Long-standing manager, Medical Department head, and principal authority on recruitment, medicine, and operational caution 81 254.
- Doctor — Recovered by Rhodes Island during the Chernobog operation and later entrusted with tactical command during the evacuation 226 227.
- Reunion Movement — A close cooperating organization; Rhodes Island initially sought contact with its Ursus and New Reunion factions, and the two groups later coordinated during the Chernobog operation 54 206 219.
- Lungmen — Strategic partner that authorized a Rhodes Island office and planned hospital; Lungmen also sent an official exchange delegation to the landship 241 253.
- Catastrophe Messengers — A cooperating organization whose members can retain their identities while joining Rhodes Island 81.
- Acahualla — A prospective regional partner whose medicinal herbs could help ease Rhodes Island's supply shortage 305.
- Ibuki Suika — Field operator and later Elite Operator; her delivery of the Inhibitor formula and decisive support in Chernobog greatly aided Rhodes Island 59 219 254.
