Background & History
Kyoto Jujutsu High
Mai initially treated Shiyue Shuo with open contempt, dismissing his apparent lack of cursed energy and warning him to hide during the Goodwill Event rather than become Kyoto School’s burden 2. Her abrasive attitude masked concern: after the event, she brought him a handkerchief and warned him about Principal Gakuganji’s suspicions 5.
During the abandoned-factory mission, Mai supported her team with precise revolver fire, disrupting a Special Grade cursed spirit’s senses so Mechamaru and Noritoshi Kamo could create an opening for Shiyue’s final attack 7. Though skeptical of Shiyue’s explanation for his power, she helped care for him during his recovery and later trained him through live-fire target practice 8 9.
Mai’s attitude toward Kokichi Muta also softened after learning that his restored body came at the cost of his cursed-energy output for ten years; she still called his decision foolish, but no longer regarded him with the same wariness 8.
Shibuya Incident
Mai fought beside Maki Zenin and Naobito Zenin in Shibuya Station’s B1 level. Her revolver was heavily used while the three held their ground against Choso, Eso, and Kechizu before escaping with the Kyoto group’s support 20.
Zenin Clan Incident
Mai and Maki returned to the Zenin Clan’s Forbidden Vault to retrieve cursed tools for the Culling Game. Mai wanted to leave the estate as quickly as possible, while Maki promised that they would leave the clan for good once their task was finished 25.
Their father, Ogi Zenin, ambushed and overpowered them, deflecting Mai’s shots and wounding her shoulder before imprisoning the sisters in the vault’s dungeon 25. Knowing that twins were treated as one entity under jujutsu society’s rules—and that her existence restrained Maki’s potential—Mai used her Construction Technique and life force to forge a pitch-black longsword for Maki 25 26.
Mai died after completing the weapon, removing the cursed-energy burden that had limited Maki and enabling her sister’s full physical awakening 26.
Rebirth and Ordinary Life
Shiyue recovered Mai’s body and used Twelvefold Astral Signs: Eternal Coordinates to separate her soul from the cursed tool, return it to her body, and preserve it with the Sheep Talisman 26 27. The process removed her jujutsu-sorcerer bloodline and cursed energy; she awoke as an ordinary person and adopted the surname Tensho 27.
Mai later opened Skyward Flower Shop in Furano, Hokkaido, living independently away from the Zenin Clan and jujutsu society 37 45. After Shiyue became imperceptible to the rest of the world, Mai remained able to see, hear, and physically touch him due to their soul connection from her rebirth 45 46. She let him stay above the shop and offered him unpaid work there 47.
When shadow creatures began killing people near the shop, Mai investigated despite no longer being a sorcerer. Her bullets could not harm the creatures, but her altered soul still allowed her to sense traces of cursed energy 50.
Appearance
After leaving the Zenin Clan, Mai presents herself as a civilian florist rather than a jujutsu sorcerer.
- Formerly wore black thigh-high stockings, tactical clothing, and carried a custom revolver 2 5.
- Later appeared in a black camisole during Shiyue’s training 9.
- Keeps her hair short in her life as Tensho Mai 45.
- Wears an off-white sweater and dark-blue apron while working at the flower shop 45.
- Uses glasses while investigating the shadow-related death near Skyward Flower Shop 50.
Personality
Mai is sharp-tongued, impatient, and prone to expressing concern through insults. She calls Shiyue useless while simultaneously warning him about danger, tending to him after battles, and pushing him to become more capable 2 5 8 9.
Her loyalty to Maki is most apparent when the sisters are trapped by Ogi. Though she had often resisted Maki’s plans to leave the clan, Mai ultimately gives her life to create the weapon that frees Maki from their shared limitation 25 26.
As Tensho Mai, she is calmer and gentler without abandoning her blunt manner. She runs her shop alone, feeds Shiyue after their reunion, and recognizes when his ghostly existence has left him exhausted 45 46 47.
Abilities & Skills
Construction Technique
Mai’s former cursed technique allowed her to create a weapon through an extreme sacrifice.
- Burned her life force to forge a pitch-black longsword for Maki 26.
- The completed weapon carried the final remnant of Mai’s soul 27.
- Its use caused Mai’s death and erased her cursed energy and presence until Shiyue’s later intervention 26 27.
Firearms Proficiency
Mai is highly practiced with her custom revolver.
- Used cursed-energy bullets to interrupt a Special Grade cursed spirit’s vision and senses during the Kyoto factory mission 7.
- Fired on instinct to protect herself from shadow creatures near Furano 50.
- Her physical bullets are ineffective against the Shadow Warriors 50.
Residual Soul Connection
Mai’s reborn body retains an exceptional connection to Shiyue’s powers.
- She can perceive and touch Shiyue despite his Binding Vow rendering him unseen and unobservable to others 45 46.
- Shiyue identifies her as his only anchor in the world because her body and soul were reshaped through his talismans 46.
- Though an ordinary person, her unusual soul allows her to sense some cursed energy 50.
- Shiyue considers using her as a medium to release the talismans’ power against the Shadow Warriors 50.

- Custom revolver — Mai’s preferred weapon, used with cursed-energy bullets during her time as a sorcerer and retained after becoming Tensho Mai 2 7 50.

- Kokichi Muta — Kyoto School peer. Mai reacts harshly to his Binding Vow but shows concern after learning what he gave up for a normal body 8.

- Naoya Zenin — Clan relative who considered Mai and Maki disposable “defective products” and sought to eliminate them during the Zenin Clan power struggle 24 26.
