Background & History
Before arriving in the jujutsu world, Shiyue Shuo was an ordinary office worker. He drowned after accidentally falling into water during a park visit, then awakened in the world of jujutsu 2.
He entered Kyoto Jujutsu High with a Heavenly Restriction that left him with extremely low cursed energy and a frail body during his inactive periods. He concealed the true nature of the Twelve Talismans behind an official explanation that he could store cursed energy and release it as flames, allowing others—including Principal Gakuganji—to underestimate him 5 6.
During the Goodwill Event, Shiyue approached Kokichi Muta and offered to heal him in exchange for cooperation. He restored Kokichi's damaged body with the Horse Talisman, persuaded him to abandon the cursed spirits, and later protected his secret from the other Kyoto students 3 4 8.
After Shiyue warned Satoru Gojo that Kenjaku intended to seal him in Shibuya on October 31, he fought throughout the Shibuya Incident despite repeated life-threatening injuries. His Dog Talisman kept him alive through fatal damage, but its use and his repeated domain activations inflicted heavy strain on his brain and body 11 14 19.
Appearance
Shiyue initially appears physically frail due to his lack of cursed-energy nourishment, though activating the Horse Talisman gives him an unexpectedly powerful presence without changing his build 3.
- Usually has clear or dark eyes, which shift to lavender, dark gold, or golden-pink when specific talismanic powers are active 5 13 49.
- Wore a long black hooded sweatshirt and carried a backpack of cursed tools during the Shibuya Incident 13.
- Following his evolution after Kashimo's attack, his burned and scarred skin sheds away to reveal a regenerated body 33.
- Later wears a loose gray sweater while staying at Mai's flower shop in Furano 47.
Personality
Shiyue is strategic, secretive, and comfortable being underestimated. He deliberately maintains the image of a weak student because his low cursed energy makes an effective disguise, while privately planning around threats he knows are coming 2 5 11.
Despite his cynical humor and tendency to tease others, he is deeply protective of his allies. He risks himself to save Kokichi, Kinji Hakari, Megumi Fushiguro, and civilians in Shibuya, and he ultimately accepts the loss of his own place in the world to stop the demon gods drawn by his power 4 17 31 42.
He is aware of his own fear and limitations. Rather than claiming invincibility, he admits that he is afraid of facing Sukuna, yet volunteers to fight first so that Satoru Gojo can learn Sukuna's hidden abilities and survive the decisive battle 37.
Abilities & Skills
Twelve Talismans
Shiyue's primary power consists of twelve independent authorities that do not consume cursed energy, but whose simultaneous use places extreme stress on his body and consciousness 8 31 32.
- Snake Talisman — grants complete concealment, including the suppression of physical presence and existential perception; at its limit, it supports his existence-erasure Binding Vow 2 32 42.
- Horse Talisman — grants immense life force, bodily restoration, and healing capable of repairing Kokichi Muta's damaged body 3 4.
- Dog Talisman — keeps him alive through otherwise fatal trauma by forcibly reconnecting nerves, arteries, and damaged organs; severe brain damage can still limit its effectiveness 11 13 14.
- Dragon Talisman — produces highly destructive flame attacks, including the precise finishing strike used against a special-grade curse 6 7.
- Sheep Talisman — enhances soul perception and supports soul-based attacks; its authority is invoked as making his soul “eternal” 7 9 32.
- Chicken Talisman — grants levitation and telekinesis, allowing him to form force barriers, fly, and manipulate opponents or debris at range 13 23 31.
- Pig Talisman — grants laser vision and thermal perception capable of seeing through physical obstructions 17 35 49.
- Monkey Talisman — allows extensive bodily transformation, including falcon flight, obsidian armor, a giant spirit-monkey form, and the creation of clothing from condensed water vapor 22 29 33.
- Tiger Talisman — distinguishes good from evil, harmonizes and neutralizes cursed energy, and enables direct soul interference 38 41.
- Ox Talisman — grants immense physical strength, sufficient to pull up mountains and overwhelm obstacles through brute force 41 44.
- Rabbit Talisman — grants extreme speed in close combat 39.
- Rat and Rooster Talismans — can create stone serpents and contribute to aerial movement and high-impact attacks 32.
Innate Technique and Cursed Energy Storage
Shiyue publicly identifies his innate technique as cursed-energy storage and flame release, a cover that conceals the talismans' true nature 5 6.
- Possesses very low cursed energy during inactive periods and may be weaker than an ordinary person without talisman support 8 9.
- Can release stored cursed energy as flames, including Dragon Breath 6.
- His lack of conventional cursed energy repeatedly causes opponents to misjudge him 2 31 38.
Domain and Ripple
Shiyue develops a unique defensive domain after training in New Shadow Style's Simple Domain with Noritoshi Kamo and Kasumi Miwa 9.
- Ripple — cancels incoming cursed-energy attacks rather than merely neutralizing them; it stops Eso's attack before it reaches him 9 10.
- Twelvefold Astral Signs: Eternal Coordinates — domain expansion that lets him organize and wield multiple talismanic authorities simultaneously 27 28.
- Repeated domain use causes severe mental strain, including overheating and necrosis of brain tissue during Shibuya 19.
- Full twelve-authority use can damage his soul and break down his body even while the Horse Talisman repairs it 32.
Foreknowledge
Shiyue possesses knowledge of future events and tells Gojo that Kenjaku's plan will culminate in a trap to seal him in Shibuya on October 31 11.
- Uses foreknowledge to anonymously alert Gojo to the danger at Yasohachi Bridge 10.
- Understands that interfering with Yuta Okkotsu's apparent execution of Yuji would compromise Yuta's plan to save him 23.
- His knowledge becomes less reliable as his actions alter events and cause enemies to change their plans 10 13.
Soul Extraction
During the Shinjuku battle, Shiyue directly enters Sukuna's inner domain and reaches Megumi Fushiguro's soul beneath Sukuna's control 41.
- Uses the Tiger Talisman's authority to bind Sukuna's soul with black-and-white chains 41.
- Separates Sukuna from Megumi before Sukuna can deploy his Domain Expansion or additional binding vows 41.
- The process inflicts extreme pain and intensifies the world's rejection of Shiyue 41 42.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tachi — carried during the Shibuya Incident while fighting Haruta Shigemo and transfigured humans 14 15.
- Mechamaru communicator — used to receive Kokichi Muta's battlefield updates during Shibuya 14.

- Katana sealed with Reverse Cursed Technique — prepared through a Binding Vow involving Shoko Ieiri; releases stored healing energy to restore his body after the Dog Talisman fails 16.
- Mai's longsword — a soul-cutting weapon containing Mai's lingering presence, lent to him by Maki Zenin before the battle with Sukuna 37.
Relationships

- Kokichi Muta — Ally whom Shiyue heals with the Horse Talisman. Shiyue protects Kokichi's secret, while Kokichi supports him with surveillance, communications, and mechanical forces 3 4 8 14.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher and confidant. Shiyue warns him about Shibuya, later volunteers to fight Sukuna first, and receives Gojo's support despite Gojo's fear of losing another student 11 37 42.
- Yuta Okkotsu — Culling Game partner and fellow special-grade-level combatant. Yuta guides Shiyue's control of cursed energy, assists him after Kashimo's battle, and tries to stop his self-erasure 28 33 42.
- Noritoshi Kamo — Teammate and mentor who trains Shiyue in Simple Domain and recognizes the uniqueness of his defensive field 7 9.
- Kasumi Miwa — Supportive Kyoto classmate who helps demonstrate Simple Domain training and acknowledges Shiyue's role in saving the team 8 9.
- Yuji Itadori — Fellow sorcerer who carries Shiyue to Shoko Ieiri after his collapse in Shibuya and later fights to protect him from the demon gods 19 42.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Shiyue intervenes to stop Megumi from summoning Mahoraga, then later helps free him from Sukuna's possession 17 41.
- Hajime Kashimo — Formidable opponent whose battle forces Shiyue to attempt all twelve talismans and ultimately triggers Shiyue's evolution 31 32 33.
- Kenjaku — Persistent adversary who tries to recruit Shiyue, attacks him through shadow-based forces, and seeks to exploit the imbalance caused by his power 34 49.

Trivia
- The Horse Talisman is strongest at noon, while the Hour of the Rooster reduces the burden of using the Chicken Talisman alongside other authorities 4 31.
- Mai's reconstructed body and soul contain a connection to Shiyue's rule-based power, making her his sole anchor after the Binding Vow 46.
- After his vow, he can still act if he restrains his output to a level the world can interpret as a natural phenomenon or faint cursed-energy residue 44.
