Background / History
Founding and Sabaody Expansion
Sephiroth conceived Umbrella Corporation after buying Stella from a human trafficking shop and recruiting Gild Tesoro. Its initial membership consisted of only Sephiroth and Tesoro. Sephiroth named himself Chairman, appointed Tesoro Vice Chairman, and outlined plans for arms dealing, medicine, heavy industry, entertainment, and eventually intelligence 40.
Tesoro identified an opportunity when Sabaody’s two largest arms dealers fought over the market. Sephiroth eliminated the Charlie Family’s leadership, clearing the way for Umbrella’s expansion. With his continued funding, Tesoro formally established the company, recruited employees, and developed connections in both legitimate society and the underworld 45 47.
The company’s unobstructed rise also benefited from Sephiroth’s earlier dealings as the Black Emperor. Before Umbrella’s establishment, he instructed Du Feld, Dorag Pierrot, Kiberson, and Umit to recognize its emblem and leave its development unhindered 313 322.
Diversification and International Expansion
Umbrella’s purchase of Devil Fruit weapon technology initially created a cash shortage. Jim’s development of Memory Alloy sharply increased revenue, while Tesoro negotiated secret arrangements with government officials to enter gambling entertainment and intelligence 72.
Sephiroth secured permission to expand into Dressrosa despite King Riku’s opposition to arms dealing. Umbrella subsequently joined a delegation negotiating protection with Whitebeard, whose backing enabled the company to operate profitably in the New World for approximately ten years 98 101 355.
Sephiroth also used his Marine position to obtain weapons orders. When investigations made this increasingly risky, he instructed Tesoro and Stella to replace reliance on Marine influence with partnerships linking Umbrella’s interests to World Government member nations 139 158 174.
World Government Suppression
The Five Elders regarded Umbrella’s wealth, international partnerships, and pirate connections as a threat. Rather than seize it directly and antagonize its partner nations, they promoted a law prohibiting companies from exchanging benefits for protection by illegal pirate forces. The law was scheduled to take effect ten days after the Reverie 350 351.
Sephiroth rejected immediate war: Umbrella’s standing force exceeded seventy thousand, but the World Government possessed a million-strong army, and several Ancient Weapon projects were not ready. He instead sought to make the Elders believe their suppression had succeeded 351.
After retiring from the Marines, Sephiroth publicly joined Umbrella as its security consultant, with an announced annual salary of ten billion Belly. He then negotiated the end of its Whitebeard partnership following a violent confrontation 352 354 355.
Umbrella withdrew its public-facing businesses from the New World while preparing covert expansion through Sephiroth’s underworld subordinates. The Five Elders interpreted the resulting losses as a successful reduction of the corporation’s influence 358 360.
Germa and Big Mom Negotiations
Vinsmoke Judge sought to join Umbrella’s management and use its resources to conquer North Blue. Sephiroth refused both Judge’s appointment and Germa’s incorporation, instead proposing paid financial and weapons support in exchange for half the minerals, land, and energy resources in conquered territories 359.
Umbrella demonstrated its advanced weapons and Intelligent War Machines to establish its superiority. The proposed arrangement used underworld intermediaries, allowing Germa to wage wars while Umbrella profited without openly participating 361 363 365.
Big Mom later uncovered Sephiroth’s identity as Mr. K and his true ownership of Umbrella. Using that knowledge as leverage, she requested arms support and giantification research. Sephiroth agreed to cultivate Giant clones within six years while concealing his ability to produce them much faster 377.
Alabasta Operations
After discovering uranium deposits and three large oil fields in Alabasta, Umbrella sent Baccarat to negotiate extraction rights. She offered monetary compensation, rainmaking machines, and environmental transformation technology 398 399 400.
Baccarat deliberately encouraged Cobra to suspect that Umbrella had engineered his kingdom’s crisis, exploiting both the drought and his earlier support for the anti-pirate-protection law. Cobra reluctantly accepted the deal. The passage identifies this impression as a negotiating tactic, not confirmation that Umbrella caused the drought 400.
Umbrella’s intervention disrupted Crocodile’s Utopia Operation. Vivi infiltrated the company to investigate it, while Sephiroth recruited Nico Robin after revealing that he had founded Umbrella and could protect her 402 407. He later denied responsibility for Alabasta’s internal conflict and identified Baroque Works as the likely manipulator 413.
Wano Campaign
Sephiroth designated Wano as an important stronghold for Umbrella’s New World expansion. He tasked Kozuki Hiyori with uniting surviving Kozuki forces and governing the country, judging local support more economical than maintaining a permanent occupation of at least one hundred thousand troops 458.
During the campaign, Umbrella’s robots, the Kuja Pirates, and the Priestly Order suppressed resistance in the Flower Capital. More than one hundred thousand people—including pirates’ relatives and associates—were gathered under centralized control. Umbrella planned to maintain security forces until Hiyori established a stable order 459.

Financial Growth
| Chapter | Share of the World’s Belly | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 206 | Around 10% | Current control; Tesoro projected 25% within ten years at the existing development rate, without entering drugs or human trafficking. |
| 350 | 20% | Figure discussed by the Five Elders as a danger to World Government rule. |
| 360 | 28%, projected to fall to about 12% | Nusjuro’s estimate following legal suppression and the apparent destruction of Umbrella’s New World businesses. |
| 463 | 32%, secretly controlled | Sephiroth’s stated figure; he claimed Umbrella could interfere with global trade flows and sharply devalue Belly. |
- International interests: By the Five Elders’ initial deliberations, Umbrella had mutually beneficial partnerships with more than twenty nations 350.
- Later political reach: Sephiroth stated that it openly shared interests with twenty-seven countries and secretly with another nine, giving it influence over thirty-six countries 463.
- Whitebeard protection costs: The former arrangement required ten billion Belly in cash and ten billion Belly worth of arms annually, but remained profitable 355.
- Salto’s prosperity: Revenue from arms, special alloys, and Dial products flowed into Salto Island, enriching its population and supporting a ten-thousand-strong professional army 173.
Technology and Research
Memory Alloy and Weapons Manufacturing
Jim created a Memory Alloy that could not be artificially synthesized and substantially improved weapon performance 72.
- Umbrella weapons containing its special alloys could not be replicated without access to those materials 100.
- External alloy sales nevertheless enabled Queen to copy Umbrella howitzers for the Beasts Pirates 213.
- The company retained a share of competitors’ production revenue through the high price of its materials 213.
Devil Fruit Technology
Umbrella purchased the technology for feeding Devil Fruits to weapons for twenty billion Belly 72.
- Object fusion: Jim used Devil Fruits to modify objects, including fusing the Float-Float Fruit with a metal bracelet 358.
- Fruit procurement: Underground trading channels supplied the Tiny-Tiny, Rumble-Rumble, and Jacket-Jacket Fruits 290.
- Research direction: Acquiring weapon-infusion technology prompted Sephiroth to study biological science and Lineage Factors 72.
Lunar Technology
Sephiroth sought the technological knowledge of the ancient lunar city Birka as the foundation for highly intelligent robots and industrial transformation 261.
- By later negotiations, reproducing lunar technology was Umbrella’s main research priority 374.
- Sephiroth estimated that roughly absorbing the available knowledge would take twenty to thirty years 374.
- Lunar research enabled accurate rocket artillery with a seventy-kilometer range and manufacturing capability for high-performance aircraft, cars, and ships 380 398.
- Low oil production initially prevented widespread use of those vehicles because of fuel costs 398.
Intelligent War Machines
Umbrella’s Intelligent War Machines are three-meter-tall humanoid robots with silver shells, red-lit eyes, and Memory Alloy armor 363 364.
| Model | Role and Armament | Cost | Operating Time per Full Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| WM-1 | Heavy fire support; six-barreled 12.7 mm machine gun firing 6,000 rounds per minute, with an 800-meter maximum range; palm-mounted single-shot lasers firing once every three seconds 363. | Demonstrated unit: 1 billion Belly; projected mass-produced version: 200 million Belly 363 364. | 24 hours 363. |
| WM-2 | Mobile close- to mid-range combat; flight capability, shoulder-mounted rapid-fire lasers, and two special-alloy swords capable of cutting steel and launching Flying Slashes 363. | Demonstrated unit: 4 billion Belly; projected mass-produced version: 1 billion Belly 363 364. | 6 hours 363. |
| Ordinary robot | Labor and miscellaneous battlefield tasks; combat ability comparable to an ordinary person 364. | 30 million Belly 364. | 1 month 364. |
- Demonstrated strength: WM-2 repeatedly defeated Niji despite his electric abilities and combat suit, without suffering damage to its armor 365.
- Armor protection: An ordinary steel-cutting swordsman could not breach WM-2’s shell or joints even with a Meito and Armament Haki 364.
- Principal weakness: Sufficiently strong Armament Haki Internal Destruction could damage vulnerable internal components and circuits 364.
- Production trade-off: Proposed lower-performance mass-produced models addressed the expense of top-spec machines 364.
Cloning and Lineage Factors
Umbrella obtained MADS research through Du Feld, whom Sephiroth had arranged to finance the team 362.
- Its cloning technology was comparable to Germa’s, although its application of Lineage Factors remained less developed than Judge’s 363.
- The acquired research also included Queen’s human mechanization technology and Caesar’s biochemical weapon technology 362.
- Umbrella rejected a conventional clone army in favor of intelligent robots after comparing their advantages and disadvantages 362 377.
- Sephiroth’s concealed Ripe-Ripe Fruit experiments showed that accelerated maturation produced no physiological defects, potentially allowing mass troop production 377.
Pharmaceuticals
Umbrella’s laboratories supported Sephiroth’s analysis of the Fish-Man ES Drug and development of a human-compatible version 284.
- The human version could be mass-produced, but its consumption of Life Force made it unsuitable as a routine means of strengthening the company 284.
- Attempts to combine it with the Life Enhancement Potion sought a permanent strength increase without the original drawbacks 284.
- The project remained unresolved; clinical trials on pirates repeatedly caused fatal bleeding or bodily explosions 284.
Weather, Media, and Energy
- Rainmaking machines: According to Baccarat, they desalinate seawater and use precision meteorological instruments to create rain clouds over selected areas without Dance Powder or side effects 400.
- Video technology: Umbrella’s Visual Den Den Mushi players required specialized machines to copy protected films. Recording them with Video Den Den Mushi remained possible but substantially degraded image quality 206.
- Nuclear energy plans: Uranium was sought for both nuclear weapons and power plants, with electricity demand rising alongside the company’s robot inventory 398.
- Space exploration plans: Discovering Dyna Stone’s use as stable spacecraft fuel led Sephiroth to consider seizing Jewel Island’s deposits as the basis for future deep-space development 260.
Military and Security
- Standing force: More than seventy thousand personnel at the time of the anti-pirate-protection law 351.
- Merchant escorts: Used sniper rifles for long-range attacks and Javelin Rocket Launchers at medium to close range; many pirates in Paradise avoided Umbrella-flagged vessels 100.
- Internal-use weapons: Sephiroth retained the AWM sniper rifle for company use and ordered Tesoro to train elite marksmen 69.
- Heavy equipment: Demonstrated thermobaric bombs, seventy-kilometer-range rocket artillery, amphibious tanks, and combat submarines to Germa 361.
- Ancient Weapon projects: At the earlier crisis, Pluton was under construction, Breath of the Gods was not fully repaired, and Poseidon was not completely controlled 351.
- Counterintelligence: Sephiroth screened key confidential departments using Observation Haki and Vampire Fruit abilities, but acknowledged that spies might remain among ordinary employees 332.
- Transport strategy: Sephiroth envisioned aircraft enabling rapid deployment, while considering them too vulnerable to Observation Haki experts for economical frontline use 398.
- Spatial transport limitation: His Door-Door Fruit enabled exceptional travel, but moving large spaces over long distances consumed too much stamina for routine company-wide transport 100.
