Background / History
Kerl was formerly an active New World pirate known as the “Bone Carver.” Three years before his death, he robbed a Heavenly Tribute vessel and injured attendants and guards of the Celestial Dragons. He was also held responsible for the deaths of at least ten Marines, earning a 75,000,000-Beli bounty. 35
After fleeing the New World, Kerl hid on Aoki Island. He used stolen money to establish a clinic, treated residents without charge, distributed food, and offered practical help to local fishermen. The islanders came to regard him as a saint and defended him when Cipher Pol arrived to arrest him. 35 36
His charitable image concealed a cellar beneath the clinic courtyard filled with children’s bones. Kerl had used the town’s gratitude and loyalty as protection against the World Government while preying on missing children. 37 38
Appearance
Kerl was a middle-aged, bald man with an extremely burly physique.
- Usually wore a clean white doctor’s coat while operating his clinic. 35
- His wanted poster depicted a more vicious appearance than his public persona. 35
- His body was powerful enough to tear apart his coat when he abandoned his façade and fought Rochi. 36
Personality
Kerl projected patience, warmth, and compassion as Aoki Island’s doctor, cultivating the residents’ trust through free treatment and charity. 35 36
Beneath that image, he was violent, arrogant, and self-serving. Once confronted by Rochi, he treated the islanders as a shield, became enraged when his physical strength was challenged, and panicked when Rochi noticed the secret beneath his courtyard. 36 37
Even while mortally wounded, Kerl framed himself as a persecuted benefactor and condemned the Marines’ justice, attempting to use the civilians’ affection to claim moral authority. 37
Abilities & Skills
Armament Haki
Kerl could coat his arms in iron-black Armament Haki to withstand Rochi’s attacks.
- His Armament Haki was described as stronger than Rochi’s during their battle. 36 37
- He used it defensively when Rochi opened the fight with a high-speed punch. 36
- His defenses were ultimately pierced when Rochi concentrated his own Haki into Finger Pistol: Shura Piercing. 37
Physical Strength and Hand-to-Hand Combat
Kerl possessed exceptional physical power and explosive speed despite his massive frame.
- His direct clash with Rochi created a visible shockwave and blew the clinic’s roof away. 36
- He fought with the technique Bone Carver: Meat Grinder Roulette. 36
- His attacks repeatedly numbed Rochi’s arms, though Rochi’s Three-Tomoe Sharingan eventually analyzed their force trajectories. 37
Pirate Experience
Kerl had extensive combat experience from operating in the New World.
- He claimed to have been killing in the New World while Rochi was still a child. 36
- His bounty and criminal record led Cipher Pol to classify him as a high-value target. 35
Relationships
- Rochi — Kerl’s opponent and killer; Rochi pursued him for his bounty and experience value, then exposed the crimes hidden beneath Kerl’s clinic. 35 37 38
- Aoki Island residents — Kerl’s patients and unwitting protectors; they revered him as a saint until the cellar of children’s bones was uncovered. 35 36 38
- Cipher Pol — pursued Kerl for crimes including robbing a Heavenly Tribute vessel and injuring Celestial Dragon personnel. 35 36
- Major Lace — accompanied Rochi’s operation against Kerl and provided intelligence on his criminal record. 35
Story Role / Major Arcs
Aoki Island Operation
Cipher Pol offered Rochi the opportunity to capture Kerl, whose 75,000,000-Beli bounty made him a valuable target. Rochi traveled to Aoki Island with Lace, thirty elite Marines, and Cipher Pol agents. 35
The operation was complicated by Kerl’s popularity among the islanders. When residents formed a human barrier to protect him, Rochi incapacitated them with his killing aura, forcing Kerl to reveal his violent nature and engage in battle. 36
Kerl’s fear of damage to a specific section of the clinic courtyard broke his combat rhythm. Rochi exploited the opening, pierced Kerl’s heart with Finger Pistol: Shura Piercing, and snapped his neck after rejecting Kerl’s claims of moral righteousness. 37
After Kerl’s death, Rochi destroyed the protected courtyard and exposed the hidden cellar of children’s bones, shattering the islanders’ belief in their doctor. 38
