The day after Christmas break ended, Kane was still half-asleep when a fiery red turkey smacked him awake.

In his bleary state, he vaguely made out what had disturbed him. It wasn't Harry, wasn't Ron, and wasn't even a person. Great, you evil fiery red phoenix, I'll—

He rubbed his eyes and took a closer look. It really was Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes.

"Uh, did old Dumbledore stay up all night because he didn't roast Mandrake last night? Go back and tell him young people need more sleep, or they won't grow taller. I'll go see him after I wake up." Kane mumbled, then pulled the blanket over his head again.

Unfortunately, Fawkes didn't care about any of that. Seeing that Kane wouldn't wake up, it simply stopped calling him. A sweep of crimson flames enveloped Kane and teleported him straight into the Headmaster's Office.
