Background
Xiao Yan was born as Xiao Zhan and Xiao Long's third son. Unlike the expected tragic outcome of the childbirth, Xiao Long survived after Xiao Zhan used a Seventh Grade Life-Returning Pill. Xiao Yan retained memories of a prior life and immediately recognized that he had been reborn into a world of Dou Qi. 46
His aptitude was judged upper-grade in infancy: not absolute top-tier, but sufficient to reach Dou Sheng with adequate resources and opportunities. 48 He began cultivating at a young age and rapidly became the Xiao Clan's most celebrated member of his generation, reaching Three-Star Da Dou Shi at twelve. 79 115
A Heaven Realm Soul later absorbed his Dou Qi, reducing him to Three Stages of Dou Zhi Qi. Xiao Zhan and Xiao Han deliberately allowed him to endure the loss rather than immediately intervene, believing the hardship would temper his character. 115 116 Over three years, Xiao Yan changed from proud and arrogant to restrained, resilient, and capable of enduring humiliation without abandoning cultivation. 117
After recovering, he accepted Elder Yao as his teacher, cultivated the Burning Flame Art, and began studying alchemy. 129 143 144 He subsequently left for Canaan Academy, competed in the Alchemist Grand Meeting and the Four Directions Pavilion Assembly, and became known across Central State for his talent. 174 268 270
Appearance
Xiao Yan was described as a delicate-featured and handsome child; as a youth, he developed a lean build through harsh training. 79 158
- Often wears black during his return to the Dou Zhe realm. 143
- Trains with a huge black ruler beneath a waterfall. 158
- Was considered attractive and popular among the Xiao Clan's younger generation from childhood. 79
Personality
As a child, Xiao Yan was proud of his talent and status, attracting concern from Xiao Zhan and other Xiao Clan members. 79 The three years in which he was treated as a “cripple” fundamentally changed him: he became quieter, more cautious, and more willing to endure adversity. 117 118
He retains a strong competitive drive and confidence in battle, but no longer seeks validation through fame. Upon returning to One-Star Dou Zhe, he accepted public praise calmly, regarding strength rather than reputation as the source of true dignity. 143 He is also deeply loyal to those he accepts as family or teacher, willingly setting aside his grievance with the Nalan Family to help Elder Yao obtain materials for a new body. 175

Heavenly Tomb and Later Growth
Xiao Yan entered the Heavenly Tomb, where Xiao Han secretly possessed him to meet Xiao Xuan. The experience left Xiao Yan shocked by the depth of the Xiao Clan's hidden history. 312 By the time he stood before the Ancient Emperor Stone Statue, he had reached Seven-Star Dou Sheng and Emperor Realm Soul. 375
