The doctor could tell from Su Minghui's expression what she was suspecting and hurriedly explained, "I took a moment to look over the meal plans from the past few days. The nutritionist's arrangements were very reasonable and wouldn't have caused this. Could the family have brought them something to eat?"
Su Minghui denied it as well.
She had been staying at the Chu Family home lately and only came by regularly to visit the two elders. She had never brought any food with her. Fu Siwen had come with her too, so she would not have delivered anything on her own.
Besides, the two elders had only recently moved to this sanatorium. Not many people knew they were staying here, so no one else should have come to visit them.
Then where exactly was the problem?
Su Leyun pointed with his little hand directly at the late-arriving Zhou Guomin.
[It's that scumbag dad!]
[He's been bringing soup to the sanatorium lately. He had his mistress carefully make it, picking ingredients that all conflicted with Grandpa's medicine, all to kill Grandpa and Grandma!]
Though she had long suspected him, Su Minghui was still furious. She rushed into the hospital room and looked around. Sure enough, she spotted the household tableware on the bedside cabinet. She picked it up and went straight to Zhou Guomin, demanding, "What exactly are you trying to do? Do you want to kill my parents?"
At the sight of the tableware, Zhou Guomin's heart lurched. He had actually forgotten about that and let Su Minghui catch him red-handed!
But his face did not redden and his heart did not race. He put on an innocent, aggrieved expression and questioned Su Minghui instead. "What are you talking about? I don't understand at all. Why would I hurt Mom and Dad? I married into the Su Household over a decade ago, and this is the suspicion I get in return?"
He actually had the nerve!
So angry that she smashed the bowl onto the floor, Su Minghui sent porcelain shards flying everywhere. With one hand now free, she grabbed Zhou Guomin by the collar. "This is our household tableware. I haven't been home at all lately. Other than you, who else would bring things to my parents?"
Seeing that things were going badly, the doctor picked up the remaining bowl of soup and gave it a light sniff before naming several medicinal ingredients. "That's right, this is it. The patient's adverse reaction was most likely caused by drinking this."
Zhou Guomin put on an expression of sudden realization and looked deeply remorseful. "Dad's health has improved a lot lately. He can eat some soft foods now instead of relying entirely on nutrient injections and IV drips. I thought the sanatorium's food could never compare to food from home, so I specifically had someone make nourishing soup and bring it over. I never imagined there was such a thing as conflicting medicinal properties. This is my fault!"
As he spoke, he suddenly raised his hand and slapped himself twice across the face. His cheeks swiftly turned red and swollen.
Because of Su Leyun, Father Su's condition had improved some time ago. Previously, all his nutrition had come from nutrient injections and IV drips, but recently, he had suddenly been able to chew and eat on his own, swallowing simple foods.
The news had delighted Su Minghui and Mother Su for several days. They felt that they had finally seen hope that Father Su might regain consciousness.
Thus, Zhou Guomin's actions seemed explainable and might even make people think he was a good son-in-law who cared deeply for his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
The doctor said as well, "The sanatorium has had cases like this before, though none this serious. Family members still need to follow medical advice carefully. Don't let good intentions lead to bad results."
"Yes, yes, yes." Zhou Guomin lowered his head, looking thoroughly obedient. "We'll definitely be more careful from now on!"
Seeing that Su Minghui and the others had no further questions, the doctor gave a few more reminders and left.
Watching the doctor's departing back, Zhou Guomin revealed a faint, nearly imperceptible smile. He thought he had hidden it well, but Su Minghui caught every bit of it.
What was he happy about? Was he pleased that his plan had been flawless?
Su Minghui clenched her fists.
When Zhou Guomin turned back, he still looked regretful. "Minghui, don't be angry. This really was my oversight. I truly never intended to harm Mom and Dad. Everything I have now was given to me by the Su Household. What would I gain from harming them?"
He had used eighty percent of his strength on those two slaps, and his face still throbbed faintly. Su Minghui should have no reason to keep suspecting him now, right?
Zhou Guomin secretly raised his eyes, wanting to observe Su Minghui's expression, but Fu Siwen directly pulled Su Minghui to her side and said sarcastically, "What a remarkable coincidence of an oversight. Out of so many medicinal ingredients, you just happened to choose only the ones Uncle couldn't take. I hear that when there are too many coincidences, it becomes deliberate. What do you think, President Zhou?"
[Godmother is amazing! Everything you said is right!]
[That scumbag dad and his mistress just don't want Grandpa and Grandma to regain their health, so they chose this moment to make their move.]
[They originally wanted to slowly poison them to death without anyone noticing by using conflicting food properties, but Grandma was too alert, so their plan fell through!]
As for being afraid that Father Su and Mother Su would recover their health, Su Minghui could have guessed it even without Su Leyun saying so—the shareholders' meeting was approaching. If her father recovered, there was no way the position of president would fall to Zhou Guomin.
What he needed was their prestige, a tool to gild his identity, not someone truly capable of shouldering the company.
Even if not now, if Zhou Guomin successfully won the election at the shareholders' meeting, he would likely move against them immediately afterward.
Fu Siwen's words made Zhou Guomin feel like he had thorns in his back. That was why he had initially kept Su Minghui from associating with this group of friends—a group of women together would dissect every expression, every movement, and every word you said.
Zhou Guomin happened to be someone who could not withstand scrutiny.
That was why he had chosen to manipulate Su Minghui, making her cut off contact with them.
It seemed he would have to have a proper talk with her later. She could not keep hanging around with Fu Siwen all day and disrupting his plans!
Just as Zhou Guomin was racking his brains for something to say to brush the matter aside, Su Minghui took the initiative to explain for him. "Siwen, you're overthinking it. Guomin loves me so much. He definitely wouldn't do anything to betray me."
She turned back to him with a false smile. "Honey, isn't that right?"
Zhou Guomin nodded repeatedly and looked smugly at Fu Siwen. "Mrs. Chu, Minghui has already said so. You're not still going to suspect me, are you?"
Sure enough, no matter how clever a friend was, she could not compare to someone blinded by love. Zhou Guomin was extremely confident in his own charm now.
Su Minghui gave Fu Siwen a meaningful look. Fu Siwen immediately understood and followed her lead. "My mistake. I judged a gentleman's heart with a petty person's mind."
With the crisis resolved, Zhou Guomin felt refreshed and at ease, failing to notice the coldness on the two women's faces.
What fun would it be to lay everything out now? They had reached the final stage of their showdown. Su Minghui had gathered quite a bit of evidence, and now all that remained was to wait for the shareholders' meeting and deliver the perfect counterattack.
