A gentle breeze drifted by. Mu Jizi stood atop the mountain peak, looking up at the newly risen sun, his heart utterly still.
Suddenly, a sound rang out, and Kunpeng strode to his side.
"Have you finished refining it?" Mu Jizi's gaze remained unchanged. His lips moved slightly as he asked about Kunpeng absorbing most of Red Cloud's essence last time.
"Mhm!" Kunpeng nodded, excitement flashing in his eyes. The sharp edge he had displayed before was now gone, replaced by an aura of having washed away all dust and returned to simplicity.
Clearly, after absorbing most of Red Cloud's original essence, Kunpeng had gained enormous benefits.
"That Daoist Red Cloud was aligned with wind, making him compatible with my foolish younger brother Roc's body. It saved me quite a bit of trouble."
"Oh?" Mu Jizi raised a brow and frowned faintly, rebuking him slightly. "Seeking the Dao is for oneself. One's foundation is of utmost importance. Another's cultivation and realm can never be as stable as one's own Dao attainments. This time, you Devoured another person's cultivation and Dao attainments. In the future, proving your Dao will only become more difficult!"
"Elder Brother is right." Kunpeng frowned upon hearing this, then smiled again. "However, what my Devouring divine ability consumed was not another's cultivation realm, but his insights into cultivation!"
"Hmph! I say one thing, and you still refuse to admit fault!" Mu Jizi snorted coldly and continued, "The Dao lies within a person, within the heart. Different people have different insights into cultivation. If you forcibly merge another's Dao with your own, you may eventually lose even the path by which you can attain the Dao. Would that not be like killing the chicken to get the eggs, exhausting yourself for no reward?"
With those words from Mu Jizi, Kunpeng had no chance to refute him. His mouth opened and closed, but he did not know where to begin.
Seeing this, Mu Jizi's expression finally eased. "Let it go this time. The next time you use your innate divine ability to Devour another's cultivation and Dao attainments, you must not integrate them into yourself!"
"Yes, Elder Brother!" Kunpeng was moved once more. On second thought, though Mu Jizi was reprimanding him, was he not also caring for him? Devouring another's cultivation and Dao attainments could indeed increase one's understanding of the profound principles of the Grand Dao, but what belonged to another was ultimately another's. Even if he forcibly fused it through his innate divine ability, once or twice would not affect his Dao heart. But what if it happened too often? By then, perhaps even he himself would no longer know what Dao he was cultivating!
The two said no more and silently watched the rising sun. It was as though they could see the endless river of history, along with the past, present, and future.
Time seemed frozen at that moment. After a long while, a powerful surge of spiritual energy suddenly swept over them. Mu Jizi and Kunpeng both shuddered slightly, then exchanged a glance. Without another word, they headed toward the source of the spiritual energy fluctuations.
Before they had gone far, they saw from afar four figures, like divine beings, battling one another in the void.
All four possessed extraordinary cultivation. The violent aftermath of their battle even tore open spatial cracks like the mouths of bottomless abysses.
Kunpeng and Mu Jizi exchanged another look, each seeing confusion in the other's eyes.
Could it be that Zenith Heaven Golden Immortals were now as numerous as hairs on an ox across the Primordial Wilderness? Encountering one Red Cloud earlier was one thing, but now they had come upon four more Zenith Heaven Golden Immortals fighting each other. It was truly strange!
Boom! Boom! Boom!...
Explosions rang out one after another, like the roar of Heaven's wrath! Of the four figures in the void, three were young and beautiful women, while one was a middle-aged man in a yellow robe. They had naturally divided into two sides. One man and one woman appeared to be Dao companions, and whenever they worked together, their divine abilities complemented each other perfectly, forcing the other two women into a rather sorry state.
Yet that very helplessness made one unable to resist stepping forward, wanting to cherish and pamper those two women properly.
The moment Kunpeng saw one of the women, his entire body trembled. A look of infatuation actually flashed through his eyes! Had Mu Jizi not held him back, he would have rushed into the void at once to help her.
"Elder Brother, why are you holding me back?" The infatuation faded from Kunpeng's eyes. He looked at Mu Jizi and could not help sending him a mental message.
Mu Jizi did not answer. Instead, he looked at Kunpeng with a half-smile, as though he could see something in his eyes.
"Er... what does Elder Brother mean by that?" Kunpeng looked embarrassed, his gaze darting about. He resembled a child from later generations who had been caught doing something wrong.
"Nothing." Mu Jizi smiled faintly and sent a mental message. "Could it be that Worthy Brother has taken a liking to one of those women?"
"Haha, truly nothing can be hidden from Elder Brother!" Kunpeng laughed heartily. Now that he had said it aloud, he no longer felt embarrassed.
Within the Primordial Wilderness, cultivation companions were not common, but neither were they rare. Cultivators were people who defied Heaven itself. They acted as they pleased; if they found someone pleasing to the eye, they would become Dao companions. There were countless such pairs, unlike the cumbersome formalities of later generations.
At that time, no one cared whether their families were properly matched. It depended solely on personal preference.
"Haha, then we should lend a hand!" Mu Jizi suddenly threw back his head and laughed. He made no effort to suppress it, and the laughter immediately spread outward.
The four people fighting in the distance were all startled. Someone had been spying on their battle without their noticing at all. Although they had poured most of their attention into the fight and had not deliberately watched their surroundings, they were still Zenith Heaven Golden Immortals. For someone to remain undetected under such circumstances, their cultivation and divine abilities were clearly no weaker than theirs—perhaps even stronger!
With that thought, the four paused in their battle. Their divine senses swept through the surrounding area, and they began holding back some of their strength, unwilling to fight until both sides were wounded and let someone else reap the gains.
"Yuehua, Xihe, hand over the Jade Spirit Yin Kui Sword at once, and my wife and I will leave immediately!" The middle-aged man's face darkened. Casually launching an attack, he sent a mental message. "Otherwise, do not blame my wife and me for striking heavily. If you lose your lives then, regret will come too late!"
"Hmph!" After evading an attack, Xihe snorted coldly and sent a mental message. "Eastern Azure Emperor, do not push us too far. You two have already taken the Nine Heavens Profound Yang Ruler, yet you still wish to covet the Jade Spirit Yin Kui Sword in my sister's and my hands. You are truly beneath contempt!"
"You still have the nerve to say that!" Eastern Azure Emperor, also known as the Eastern Duke, immediately changed expression and continued sending a mental message. "When those two spirit treasures emerged, my wife and I were the ones who discovered them first. You two came late and picked up an easy bargain, yet now you act as though you are in the right!"
"Spirit treasures choose their masters. If you and your wife lack such fortune, you cannot blame others!" Xihe retorted without yielding an inch.
The group continued fighting while exchanging mental messages. The conflict seemed to have arisen over the treasures.
"You—!" The Eastern Duke flew into a rage, glaring wide-eyed, and revealed an opening because of it!
Seeing this, Mu Jizi and Kunpeng's eyes immediately lit up. Ever since Mu Jizi had laughed aloud, the two had been searching for an opportunity to aid the two women at a disadvantage.
After discussing it, and since they did not know the others' true capabilities, they had decided to resort to a sneak attack. Though it was somewhat underhanded, it was safer. Now that the Eastern Duke had exposed an opening, they did not know why, but that did not hinder them from acting to help...
