Dusk gradually fell.
Only one lamp remained lit at Jaya Island's port, serving as a guide for ships arriving here.
In truth, it was a highly irresponsible practice.
But Jaya Island itself had never had much sense of responsibility.
With no governing authority, it had become a lawless and chaotic island many years ago. Like Hachinosu, it possessed the qualities of a pirate paradise.
Hachinosu was not the only place called a pirate paradise. There were many places like it across the seas. It was only because the Rocks Pirates had previously occupied it as their base that it became so famous.
Jaya Island was extremely chaotic. Conflicts and killings broke out every day, and many pirates lingering in the first half of the Grand Line came here to fight for power.
It was said that every year, quite a few pirates with bounties exceeding ten million were buried on Jaya Island, dying in infighting among pirates.
Perhaps that was one of the reasons the World Government allowed such an island to exist?
The Oro Jackson slowly sailed into the silent harbor under the hazy darkness.
"This damn place is still such a shithole." Roger clicked his tongue as he looked at the corpse hanging beneath a lamppost, impaled through the buttocks.
Clearly, this was not the Roger Pirates' first visit to Jaya Island.
"Spencer, go ashore and gather some information. Find out when the next Knock Up Stream will erupt," Roger ordered.
Since they had been to Jaya Island before, Roger and the others knew that although the harbor appeared deserted and run-down, there was a town deeper inland called Mock Town.
That place never settled down at night. After all, pirates loved drinking until dawn.
"We're not going together?" Vikengam asked curiously.
"It stinks in there. I just took a bath, and I don't feel like getting into trouble," Roger said with a look of disgust.
Rayleigh nodded. "The island is full of pirates and criminals, so you can imagine the quality of service. There's no need to go too deep inside. Staying in a hotel on the island is worse than sleeping on the ship."
"That's right." Jaba nodded in strong agreement.
It seemed they all despised this damned place. However, Vikengam was quite interested in Mock Town, so he said, "Spencer, I'll go with you."
"Fine." Spencer answered and jumped straight down from the deck.
Vikengam followed right behind him, leaping into the harbor as well.
Before long, the two vanished from the port and headed deeper into the island.
After passing through a messy patch of woods, distant lights gradually reflected in Spencer and Vikengam's eyes.
A shabby, old, chaotic-looking town lay several hundred meters away. Compared to the silence of the harbor, this town was indeed bustling. Before they had even approached, they had already heard several gunshots.
"The stench of losers is truly nauseating. Stay here long enough, and maybe we'll rot just like them," Spencer muttered softly as he lit a cigarette, as though trying to drive away the "smell of decay" in the air.
"Losers?" Vikengam clicked his tongue.
"That's right, losers. Most of the pirates gathered here either don't dare enter the New World or were driven out by the people there. They've lost their courage. They huddle together here, brag about their former glory, drown themselves in alcohol, and slowly rot away," Spencer said disdainfully.
Just as Spencer had said, not every pirate had the courage to break into the New World, nor could every pirate remain there.
The eliminated losers instinctively gathered on certain islands and gradually rotted away. Jaya Island was one of them.
Soon, Vikengam and Spencer entered the chaotic town. Drunks were everywhere in the streets, and criminals frequently started conflicts, drew blades and guns, and slaughtered one another. Before long, several corpses would be left behind.
No one came to collect them. Perhaps someone would deal with it after dawn?
"Let's find a tavern first and ask the locals..." Spencer stopped midway, then said irritably, "This is exactly why we hate this damn place..."
Vikengam looked at several figures emerging from the dark street, armed with blades and muskets, and laughed. "Who said they'd lost their courage? Aren't they very brave? They even dare to rob us."
Among the figures emerging from the shadows, the leader was a bald, burly man whose face was covered in scars. He grinned viciously at Vikengam and Spencer. "Never seen you two before. New to the island? Then you probably don't know the rules of Mock Town. If you want to stay here, you'll have to pay protection money to the Kaba Pirates!"
"Kaba..."
A crisp crack rang out, leaving the burly man too stunned to understand what had happened.
Then a sharp pain shot through his arm. Only then did he see what had happened.
The silver-haired man had somehow appeared beside him and twisted his arm off!?
"The Kaba Pirates. Is this the 'kaba' you meant?" Vikengam asked, releasing his hand.
"AAAAARGH!" The burly man howled in agony, then shouted at his men, "Kill these two bastards! Chop them into minced meat!!!"
They had clearly all drunk quite a bit. As the saying went, alcohol gave cowards courage. The pirate lackeys were not frightened. Screaming wildly, they charged at Vikengam and Spencer.
Spencer said calmly, "I'm the intelligence officer. I'm not in charge of fighting..."
"I'm a scholar. Does that mean I'm supposed to fight?" Vikengam complained, though a cruel smile curled across his lips. "Whatever. We've been drifting at sea for over a month since leaving Alabasta. My hands have been itching for a while now. Let me chop them up..."
"Oh, you've got the chopping itch, huh? I get it. Whenever Jaba's hands itch and he gets the chopping urge, he'll hack an entire mountain flat. You axe-wielding freaks are all psychopaths..." Spencer said sharply.
As his words fell, a spray of blood splashed beneath the dim streetlights.
Vikengam did not use his ability. He simply swung his hand axe.
Perhaps Jaba was right when he called Vikengam "half-human." He acted fairly normal most of the time, but every now and then, he gave off the feeling that he was a little deranged.
Vikengam swung the chained axe in his hand. The sharp clatter of chains collided with the dull sounds of an axe cleaving flesh, while blood and chunks of meat flew through the air.
The axe whistled, and blood sprayed. In less than a minute, Vikengam had savagely chopped all the bald man's lackeys into pieces of corpses. Judging by how badly they had been mangled, they would not be easy to put back together.
Then Spencer walked over to the only survivor Vikengam had left behind—the burly man whose arm had been twisted apart. Casually removing the cigarette from his mouth, he said, "I'm not very good at interrogation, so I hope you can give me a satisfactory answer immediately..."
As he spoke, Spencer pressed the still-burning cigarette butt viciously into the burly man's left eye.
"AAAAARGH!"
Painful screams and the smell of scorched protein spread through the air.
"So, tell me. When will Jaya Island's unique Knock Up Stream appear?"
Sure enough, every member of the Roger Pirates was a villain.
