Background

Roger had already sailed to Lodestar Island before joining the search for the true Final Island. Unable to proceed because of the island's chaotic magnetic field, he had the Oro Jackson built and continued seeking a route beyond it. Although he could hear the Voice of All Things, he could not read ancient script. 11 19

Following the God Valley battle, Roger's crew escaped into the West Blue while he was unconscious. When Jaygarcia Vikengam appeared aboard the ship and offered to serve as its scholar, Roger ultimately accepted him after learning he could decipher ancient writing. Vikengam's knowledge gave the formerly directionless voyage a concrete objective: locating Poneglyphs and the Road Poneglyphs needed to reach the Final Island. 17 29

His outlook changed after God Valley. Where the crew had initially treated Poneglyphs chiefly as a means to reach the Final Island, Roger became invested in the Void Century and the threat posed by Imu after learning that his own true name, Gol D. Roger, marked him as a member of the D. Clan. 19

God Valley and the Poneglyph Hunt

Roger survived the God Valley conflict and led his crew away with a major haul of treasure. Soon afterward, he accepted Vikengam and gained the means to translate the crew's Poneglyph rubbings. This shifted the Roger Pirates from aimless exploration toward a deliberate search for Laugh Tale and the Void Century's hidden history. 17 19 20

West Blue, Alabasta, and Sky Island

Roger confronted Shiki's group in the West Blue, learned that Cake Island held a Road Poneglyph, and continued searching ancient sites with Vikengam. In Alabasta, the crew excavated the Nefertari tomb, learned of the kingdom's ancient connection to the Void Century, and gained Cobra and King Wadiye as financial backers. 22 26 31 39

On Sky Island, Roger followed his ability to hear distant sounds to Shandora's Golden Bell. His recklessness later contributed to the Oro Jackson falling from the sky, forcing Vikengam to exhaust himself protecting the ship. 54 61

New World Poneglyph Campaign

Roger pursued Byrnndi World for a Poneglyph, entered the Battle of Lindelande Island, and emerged with the rubbing despite the clash ending in a three-way mutual defeat. The World Government then branded the Roger Pirates “extremely dangerous,” alleging that they sought the Ancient Weapons. 48 79 89

He subsequently ordered invasions of Wano and Cake Island to obtain further Road Poneglyphs. The Wano raid left no survivors at Habu Port, while the Cake Island operation relied on Sunbell infiltrating the island and making a rubbing amid the fighting. 102 130

Elbaf and Harald

Roger initially treated Harald as a dangerous opponent, but changed course after recognizing that the Giant King had been controlled by the same dark power that corrupted Rocks. Laugh Tale and the Pirate King

In Sea Circle Calendar 1490, Roger led the crew to the Final Island using an Eternal Log Pose. Vikengam named the island Laugh Tale, while Roger discarded the Eternal Log Pose after arriving. 169

Roger could not open the underground palace beneath Laugh Tale. His World Bank security card fell into its mechanism, and the mechanism consumed his fortune of more than sixty billion Beli as funding for a future “liberation warrior.” 169 170

The World Government confirmed the crew's achievement, formally recognized Roger as the Pirate King, and raised his bounty to 5,564,800,000 Beli. 172

Disbandment

After defeating Wang Zhi and looting Hachinosu, Roger announced the Roger Pirates' disbandment and publicized the treasure left on Laugh Tale, sparking a worldwide rush to find it. 177 178
