History
God Valley and Vikengam’s Recruitment
Following the God Valley incident, the Oro Jackson drifted through the West Blue with a haul of gold and silver. The crew also discovered the infant Shanks among the treasure. 17
Jaygarcia Vikengam boarded the ship after God Valley and sought membership as its scholar. Roger initially rejected the idea of taking in a Celestial Dragon, recognizing the World Government attention it would invite, but immediately accepted once Vikengam revealed that he could read Poneglyphs. 17
Vikengam’s recruitment gave the crew a direct means of deciphering Ancient Language years before it would otherwise acquire such expertise. He soon translated three Poneglyph rubbings concerning an ancient war, betrayal, and a power capable of destroying the world. 20
Search for the Poneglyphs
The crew’s central objective became locating Poneglyphs, uncovering the Void Century’s history, and reaching the unknown Final Island. Roger could hear the Voice of All Things but could not personally decipher Ancient Language, making Vikengam indispensable to the expedition. 11 20
The Roger Pirates operated independently amid the post-God Valley chaos. While former Rocks Pirates formed rival factions throughout the New World, Roger’s crew remained comparatively low-profile and continued traveling in search of historical clues. 30
| Milestone | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Translation of early rubbings | Vikengam reveals information concerning an ancient war, betrayal, and destructive power 20 |
| Sky Island expedition | The crew reaches Shandora, finds its Poneglyph and Golden Bell, and takes part of the city’s gold 54 56 |
| Fish-Man Island | Sunbell joins and leads the crew to two Poneglyphs, including a crimson Road Poneglyph 73 |
| Zou | Zunesha carries the Oro Jackson to Zou, where Goat Sihan permits Vikengam to decipher the final Road Poneglyph 142 |
| Laugh Tale | The crew uses an Eternal Log Pose to reach the Final Island and formally names it Laugh Tale 169 172 |
Sky Islands and Jaya
The Roger Pirates modified the Oro Jackson for a Knock Up Stream ascent after gathering information at Jaya Island. Jaba piloted the ship through the stream and into the White Sea. 50 53
Their visit to Jaya also displayed the crew’s brutal reputation. Vikengam massacred members of the Kaba Pirates while Spencer tortured the surviving leader for information on the Knock Up Stream. 49
On Birka, Roger led the crew in an attack that killed the island’s God and its so-called divine race. The crew seized the Rumble-Rumble Fruit from the island’s temple before departing. 57
Lindelande Island
After learning that Byrnndi World possessed a Poneglyph, the Roger Pirates intervened in the conflict at Lindelande Island. Roger demanded the stone directly, triggering a major battle involving the World Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates, Flying Pirates, and Marines. 48 79 80
Vikengam froze the surrounding sea to create a larger battlefield and killed the World Pirate Gairam during the fighting. The Roger Pirates ultimately secured the Poneglyph. 80 89
The World Government responded by declaring the crew extremely dangerous, accusing it of seeking Ancient Weapons to conquer or destroy the world. 89
Elbaf Alliance
The crew later encountered the controlled Giant King Harald at Elbaf. Recognizing that Harald had lost his self-awareness to the World Government’s influence, Roger, Rayleigh, Jaba, and Vikengam agreed to intervene rather than withdraw. 155
Despite their rivalry, the Roger Pirates temporarily allied with Shiki’s Flying Pirates against Harald. Roger froze Harald while Rayleigh attempted to strike him down, but Admiral Zephyr blocked the attack. 155
Vikengam later defeated Harald with his Armored Might: Frost-Sky Ice Beast ability. Harald remained frozen but alive; the crew stated that only someone able to break the Undying Curse could truly save him. 156 163
Laugh Tale and Disbandment
In February of Sea Circle Calendar 1490, the Roger Pirates reached the Final Island. They found an ancient banquet site and an underground palace that could not be opened through force. 169
Roger accidentally dropped his World Bank security card into the palace mechanism. The mechanism used his fortune—over sixty billion Beli—to fund its opening, leaving Roger effectively broke. 169 170
The World Government confirmed the crew’s achievement, recognized Roger as the Pirate King, and issued unprecedented bounty increases for the entire crew. 172
Afterward, the crew raided Hachinosu, killed Pirate Patriarch Wang Zhi, looted the island, and sold exclusive news of its exploits to Morgans. Roger then publicly announced the crew’s disbandment and declared that his treasure remained on Laugh Tale. 177 178

Trivia
- Roger jokingly named Vikengam an “executive vice captain” after the scholar gave the crew luxury clothing, though the appointment carried no formal authority. 71
- The crew’s relaxed internal hierarchy allows members to openly mock Roger, including after he loses his fortune at Laugh Tale. 170
- Before disbandment, Vikengam proposed forming a new crew to challenge Imu. Several former Roger Pirates later became part of the Viking Pirates. 148 183 187
