At the time Vikengam joined, the Roger Pirates numbered seventeen members. Their early structure already emphasized specialized roles rather than sheer numbers. 18

By the time the World Government recognized Roger as Pirate King, the crew had thirty-four active official members. Every named member except the apprentice pair Shanks and Buggy held a bounty exceeding 100 million Beli. 172

The crew developed an informal mentorship system: Roger, Rayleigh, and Gaban trained Vikengam; Vikengam taught Bullet; and Bullet trained Shanks and Buggy. Despite Roger’s authority as captain, the members routinely teased and argued with him. 100 153

History

God Valley and Vikengam’s Recruitment

Following the God Valley incident, the Oro Jackson drifted through the West Blue with a haul of gold and silver. The crew also discovered the infant Shanks among the treasure. 17

Jaygarcia Vikengam boarded the ship after God Valley and sought membership as its scholar. Roger initially rejected the idea of taking in a Celestial Dragon, recognizing the World Government attention it would invite, but immediately accepted once Vikengam revealed that he could read Poneglyphs. 17

Vikengam’s recruitment gave the crew a direct means of deciphering Ancient Language years before it would otherwise acquire such expertise. He soon translated three Poneglyph rubbings concerning an ancient war, betrayal, and a power capable of destroying the world. 20

The crew collectively raised Shanks aboard the ship. Vikengam’s logbook records his identity as Garling’s child and the affection the pirates showed him as an infant. 47 147

Search for the Poneglyphs

The crew’s central objective became locating Poneglyphs, uncovering the Void Century’s history, and reaching the unknown Final Island. Roger could hear the Voice of All Things but could not personally decipher Ancient Language, making Vikengam indispensable to the expedition. 11 20

The Roger Pirates operated independently amid the post-God Valley chaos. While former Rocks Pirates formed rival factions throughout the New World, Roger’s crew remained comparatively low-profile and continued traveling in search of historical clues. 30

Sky Islands and Jaya

The Roger Pirates modified the Oro Jackson for a Knock Up Stream ascent after gathering information at Jaya Island. Gaban piloted the ship through the stream and into the White Sea. 50 53

Their visit to Jaya also displayed the crew’s brutal reputation. Vikengam massacred members of the Kaba Pirates while Spencer tortured the surviving leader for information on the Knock Up Stream. The crew subsequently used Mock Town as a temporary base while preparing its ship. 49 50

At Shandora, the crew found the Golden Bell and a Poneglyph. After collecting gold from the ruins, it followed Vikengam’s research to Birka in search of the Rumble-Rumble Fruit. 54 56

On Birka, Roger led the crew in an attack that killed the island’s God and its so-called divine race. The crew seized the Rumble-Rumble Fruit from the island’s temple before departing. It also acquired ancient blueprints there, including plans for a flying ship. 57 207

Lindelande Island

After learning that Byrnndi World possessed a Poneglyph, the Roger Pirates intervened in the conflict at Lindelande Island. Roger demanded the stone directly, triggering a major battle involving the World Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates, Flying Pirates, and Marines. 48 79 80

Vikengam froze the surrounding sea to create a larger battlefield and killed the World Pirate Gairam during the fighting. The Roger Pirates ultimately secured the Poneglyph. 80 89

The World Government responded by declaring the crew extremely dangerous, accusing it of seeking Ancient Weapons to conquer or destroy the world. 89

After leaving Lindelande, Sambel rescued the child Buggy from the sea. Roger accepted him aboard, giving Shanks a fellow apprentice. 88

Wano and Cake Island

When coastal artillery fired on the approaching Oro Jackson at Wano’s Habu Port, Roger ordered the crew to return fire. The confrontation escalated into a raid in pursuit of a Poneglyph. The pirates killed Shimotsuki Yasuie and his samurai, prompting Kozuki Oden to seek revenge. 102 104

The crew also met Professor Clover’s scholar team in Wano and compared historical research with them. Clover recognized Vikengam’s expertise and invited him to join the scholars, an offer Roger opposed. 104

Before the crew traveled to Cake Island, Vikengam warned that the God’s Knights and Giant King Harald might confront them there. At Cake Island, Charlotte Linlin rejected Roger’s proposed cooperation against the World Government. Roger and Rayleigh fought Harald, while Gaban and Vikengam engaged Linlin. 115 127 128

Elbaf Alliance

The crew later encountered the controlled Giant King Harald at Elbaf. Recognizing that Harald had lost his self-awareness to the World Government’s influence, Roger, Rayleigh, Gaban, and Vikengam agreed to intervene rather than withdraw. 155

Despite their rivalry, the Roger Pirates temporarily allied with Shiki’s Flying Pirates against Harald. Harald was frozen during the fighting, and Rayleigh attempted to strike him down, but Admiral Zephyr blocked the attack. 155

Vikengam later defeated Harald with his Armored Might: Frost-Sky Ice Beast ability. Harald remained frozen but alive; the crew stated that only someone able to break the Undying Curse could truly save him. Elbaf’s elder Yaruru subsequently explained that the Roger Pirates had acted to save the kingdom, rather than attack it as enemies. 156 163

Public accounts credited Shiki alone with the Elbaf victory and omitted the Roger Pirates’ role. By then, members who wished to continue pirating after Roger’s planned disbandment had decided to form a new crew under Vikengam. 164

Laugh Tale and Disbandment

After examining a final Poneglyph with Professor Clover’s scholars on Vatican Island, the Roger Pirates set sail for the Final Island. The inscription concerned Joy Boy’s allies and a rhythm needed to awaken a sealed gift. The crew departed singing “Binks’ Sake.” 167 168

On February 5 of Sea Circle Calendar 1490, the Roger Pirates reached the Final Island. They found an ancient banquet site and an underground palace that could not be opened through force. Based on the Poneglyph records and Roger’s ideas, they named the island Laugh Tale. 169 170

Roger accidentally dropped his World Bank security card into the palace mechanism. His fortune—more than sixty-four billion Beli—became inaccessible inside the palace, leaving him effectively broke. After failing to force the palace open, he planted the Roger Pirates’ flag and celebrated the completion of their voyage with the crew. 169 170

The World Government confirmed the crew’s achievement, recognized Roger as the Pirate King, and issued unprecedented bounty increases for the entire crew. 172

Afterward, the crew raided Hachinosu, killed Pirate Patriarch Wang Zhi, looted the island, and sold exclusive news of its exploits to Morgans. Roger publicly announced the crew’s impending disbandment and declared that he had left his treasure on Laugh Tale, inspiring a worldwide rush to seek the island. 177 178

The Roger Pirates spent two days aboard the Oro Jackson dividing their possessions. Their haul from Hachinosu totaled approximately fourteen billion Beli. Vikengam received the ship’s Grand Library and Gaban’s accumulated navigational charts, including its chart of Laugh Tale; Vikengam also agreed to preserve the Oro Jackson in Wano rather than use it as his next crew’s flagship. Roger then gave his final captain’s order, formally disbanding the crew. They remained aboard for one last night of drinking, singing, dancing, and farewells. 181
