Background

Chu Moqing was already famed as the Canglan Sword Venerable and the youngest Mahayana sword cultivator on Qiankun Continent when Mount Grand Mystery held its disciple-recruitment ceremony. He possessed a Sword Heart, making him one of only three known cultivators in the continent's history to have one at that time. 2 15

Although he had previously lived alone on his peak and preferred peace and quiet, he chose Feng Wuhen as his disciple before the boy's spiritual-root test. He trusted Feng's intelligence and was prepared to use a precious medicinal herb to improve Feng's spiritual root if necessary. 2 5

After accepting Feng, Chu gave him a home at his peak, guided his first qi circulation, and began personally teaching him swordsmanship, cultivation knowledge, movement techniques, and the Carefree Heart Sword. 6 14 15

Chu later learned that he, Bing Ling, and certain others could hear Feng Wuhen's inner thoughts. He kept this knowledge hidden from Feng and instructed Bing Ling to do the same. 7

Chu Moqing is quiet, direct, and initially accustomed to solitude, but Feng Wuhen's arrival gradually makes him welcome the liveliness of visitors on his peak. 95 He is deeply proud of his disciple's talent and takes an active, attentive role in Feng's training, safety, clothing, food, and social connections. 6 60 94

His protectiveness can become severe. He promises that his disciple will not be bullied, cripples Xiang Qidong after the latter attacks Feng, and devastates the Yin Family residence when Feng activates a protective token. 5 26 109 However, he is not indiscriminately violent: he initially intends only to wound Jiang Yide before deciding the man's cruelty warrants death. 158

Chu is also vigilant and calculating. He notices Heavenly Dao's unfamiliar presence before it reveals itself, secretly records the conditions placed on his relationship with Feng, and lets others see his feelings for Feng in order to win over Feng's concerned companions. 209 210 201
