Background / History

Bartolomeo originally led a mountain-bandit group controlling villages around Loguetown. His group forcibly collected protection fees, but protected villages from other bandits and adjusted the fee for poorer communities. Because the local Marines had failed to protect them, many villagers accepted Bartolomeo's arrangement and concealed his location from the authorities 7 10.

He relied heavily on the defensive power of his Barrier-Barrier Fruit and had defeated every Marine force sent against him. This left him convinced that he was invincible within the East Blue 7 11.

Encounter with Noki

Noki tracked Bartolomeo to a rural village outside Loguetown after learning of his local influence. Bartolomeo initially provoked him from behind an invisible barrier, only for Noki to erase the barrier with Dark Water and slap him across the face 10.

Bartolomeo continued attacking with his ability but was repeatedly defeated, knocked down seven times, and ultimately recognized the overwhelming gap between himself and Noki 11. Rather than remain an enemy, he asked to become Noki's fan and accepted Noki's condition that he and his gang enlist in the Marines 11.

Joining the Loguetown Marines

Bartolomeo arrived at the Loguetown base with his gang ahead of the agreed half-month deadline. Noki had them issued Marine uniforms and warned them that violations of military discipline would not be tolerated 14.

When Noki departed to eliminate Arlong, Bartolomeo was entrusted with protecting Loguetown. He took the assignment seriously, declaring that guarding towns and villages was what he did best 15.

Discipline and Reform

Bartolomeo's impulsive assault on thugs and subsequent fight with Ace severely damaged a restaurant. Noki reprimanded him for treating justice as an excuse for reckless violence, arguing that Marines who destroy civilians' livelihoods are no better than pirates 22 23.

As punishment, Bartolomeo had to compensate the restaurant and complete two weeks of double-intensity training under Dezaya's supervision. The punishment gradually tempered his behavior 23.

Loguetown Defense and Transfer

Bartolomeo helped defend Loguetown during the Krieg Pirates' attack, using his barrier alongside the other Marines to stop cannon fire aimed at the town 25. Following months of training, he was selected as part of Noki's core team when Noki received orders to return to Marine Headquarters 26.

He later traveled with Noki's crew through the Calm Belt and into the Grand Line. During an encounter with a pirate ship near Alabasta, he participated in the boarding assault and struck Vivi after doubting her claim to be the princess of Alabasta 27.
