Background / History
Ace is Vice Admiral Garp’s grandson. Before Ace turns seventeen, Garp recruits Noki to intercept him in East Blue, persuade him to join the Marines if possible, or at least teach him enough Haki and Six Powers to survive at sea 4 12.
After eating the Flame-Flame Fruit, Ace reaches Loguetown with Deuce and openly declares his intention to become Pirate King. He attacks Noki despite not yet being a wanted criminal or an established pirate 20. Noki defeats him twice in rapid succession, nullifying his flames with Dark Water and overpowering him physically 20.
Ace refuses to accept defeat and demands to be killed rather than live with the humiliation. Noki instead beats him unconscious, deliberately pushing him near his limit to accelerate his growth under Garp’s request 21 22. Ace and Deuce remain in Loguetown afterward, working to pay his medical bills while Ace recovers 22 24.
Over the following six months, Ace challenges Noki repeatedly and loses twenty-two more times. Although the defeats are brutal, they develop his Devil Fruit control, martial arts, and Haki 26 27. When Noki leaves Loguetown, Ace realizes Garp arranged the encounters as training; angry at the manipulation, he nevertheless vows to defeat Noki on the Grand Line 27.
Appearance
Ace is a young man with freckles across his cheeks. He first appears in Loguetown wearing an orange cowboy hat and brown shirt 20.
- Orange cowboy hat 20
- Freckles across his face 15 20
- Brown shirt during his arrival in Loguetown 20
- Often seen with injuries and bandages following his challenges against Noki 24 27
Personality
Ace is intensely proud, stubborn, and unwilling to retreat from a challenge. Even after being decisively defeated, he insists that the battle is not over as long as he remains alive 21. He would rather die than beg an enemy for mercy, though this pride repeatedly places both himself and Deuce in danger 21 24.
He values freedom above all else and sees piracy as the path to becoming “the freest person in the world.” He claims that he will be an honorable pirate, rejecting Noki’s argument that personal freedom does not excuse harm done to others 24 26.
Despite his recklessness, Ace is loyal to Deuce and increasingly aware that his actions can endanger his partner. During Krieg’s assault on Loguetown, he ultimately accepts Deuce’s advice to recover rather than rush into a battle he cannot win 25.
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
Ace is a Logia user of the Flame-Flame Fruit, capable of producing and controlling fire 20 22.
- Uses Flame Fist, projecting a large fist-shaped blast of fire 20.
- Uses Cross Fire, a cross-shaped flaming projectile 20 22.
- Uses Fire Gun, firing repeated flame bullets from his fingers 20.
- Uses Flame Net to create a surrounding wall of fire 21 23.
- Uses Mirror Flame to form a sustained defensive wall of fire 22 26.
- His Logia body allows ordinary physical attacks, including Bartolomeo’s barriers, to pass through him 22.
- Dark Water suppresses his Devil Fruit power and leaves him vulnerable to Noki’s physical attacks 20 26.
- Like other Logia users, he can be harmed by Haki, seawater, or Seastone 23.
Combat Growth and Resilience
Ace possesses exceptional vitality and refuses to stay down after severe injuries. He repeatedly survives Noki’s attacks, including Haki-coated Finger Pistols and attacks that leave him hospitalized 21 23 26.
- Continues challenging Noki despite being defeated more than twenty times 26 27.
- Improves his Flame-Flame Fruit techniques, martial arts, and Haki through repeated battles with Noki 26 27.
- Initially relies heavily on his Devil Fruit and remains greatly outmatched by Noki’s speed, Haki, and close-quarters skill 20 21.
- His endurance allows him to recover quickly enough to resume work and training shortly after major injuries 22 24.
Relationships
- Monkey D. Garp — Grandfather. Garp secretly arranges for Noki to stop or train Ace before he becomes a pirate, and later approves of Noki’s harsh methods so long as Ace is not killed or crippled 4 12 22.
- Deuce — Partner and traveling companion. Deuce repeatedly treats Ace’s injuries, works to pay his medical debts, and stays in Loguetown despite fearing Noki 20 21 22 24.
- Cudilia Noki — Rival, repeated conqueror, and unwilling trainer. Noki defeats Ace more than twenty times while deliberately forcing him to improve; Ace vows to defeat him on the Grand Line 20 21 26 27.
- Bartolomeo — Noki’s devoted subordinate and temporary opponent. Their barrier-versus-fire battle ends in a stalemate because neither can damage the other 22.
