Appearance
Garp is a powerfully built older Marine, described as being built “like a bull,” with fists larger than sandbags. 4 29
- Usually carries snacks such as senbei.
- Has a booming laugh and an imposing physical presence.
- His fists are capable of shattering Gion’s sword slash when reinforced with Haki. 29
Personality
Garp is informal, loud, and frequently ignores regulations aboard his own ship, but he takes the safety and growth of those close to him seriously. He values strength earned through danger rather than careful instruction, believing that people improve fastest when their lives are on the line. 6 29
His concern for Ace overrides his pride. Though he resents the terms Noki extracts from him, he accepts them because he wants Ace either kept from piracy or strengthened enough to survive it. 4 He later approves of Noki’s brutal training of Ace, provided Ace is neither killed nor permanently crippled. 22
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Haki
Garp is an overwhelmingly powerful hand-to-hand fighter whose basic punches can overwhelm Noki despite the latter’s Haki, Six Powers, and Dark-Dark Fruit abilities.
- Trained his fists by striking mountains, claiming to have smashed eight before succeeding. 29
- Sent Noki flying with a single Haki-coated punch during their first formal boxing session. 29
- Repeatedly struck through Noki’s defenses even when Noki used Observation Haki at full concentration. 31
- Shattered Gion’s sword slash with a Haki-coated fist. 29
- Remained far stronger than Noki even after Noki’s fist strength rose to roughly thirty to forty percent of his own. 31
Boxing Instruction
Garp’s teaching method centers on live combat and endurance rather than technical lectures.
- Uses himself as Noki’s “sandbag,” while actively counterattacking to force growth. 29
- Pushes Noki through repeated painful exchanges despite the Dark-Dark Fruit doubling Noki’s pain from damage. 29
- Recognizes Noki’s unusually rapid improvement and considers his potential monstrous. 31
Strategic Mentorship
Garp uses indirect methods to guide people who would reject his direct help.
- Assigned Noki to Loguetown so Ace would gain a rival close to his own age. 4
- Wanted Noki to either persuade Ace to join the Marines or make him strong enough to survive through Haki and Six Powers training. 4
- Supported Noki’s repeated beatings of Ace as a way to awaken Ace’s potential. 22
- Suggested that Noki might someday cooperate with Dragon and the Revolutionary Army. 38
History
Garp knew Noki’s father, Cudilia Rogers, and remembered him as a bold Marine whose reputation was widely known at Headquarters. 4 He also knew Noki when he was younger, including an incident in which Noki tried to blackmail him into teaching boxing by threatening to expose Ace’s identity. Garp responded by beating Noki severely and forcing the incident to be publicly described as an overly intense spar. 4
After Noki became a Headquarters rear admiral, Garp visited him with tea and senbei, accepted his cooking, and proposed that Noki transfer to Loguetown. In return for stopping Ace from sailing as a pirate—or at least strengthening him—Garp promised to teach Noki boxing and Haki, serve as an on-call sparring partner, and grant two unspecified favors. 4
Garp later transported Noki to East Blue aboard his dog-headed warship. He allowed Noki to spar with Bogard during the voyage, while charging Noki for passage by having him cook for the crew. 6 7 After Noki returned to Marineford, Garp began personally training him through violent fistfights. 28 29
Despite being Ace’s grandfather, Garp accepted that Ace’s choice to become a pirate could eventually place him in lethal conflict with Noki. He stated that he would not hate Noki if Ace died as a consequence of that choice. 29
