Background / History

Arlong led several Fish-Men, including former Sun Pirates members, from the Grand Line to East Blue. He sought to establish a place where Fish-Men could live through force and prove that Fish-Men were superior to humans. 20 22

His crew ruled the Cocoyasi Village area from Arlong Park for more than a decade, using violence and tribute to maintain control. The Arlong Pirates accumulated over 300 million Beli through their East Blue plundering. 18 19 25

Arlong kept Nami in his organization because of her exceptional ability to draw sea charts. He promised to leave Cocoyasi Village if she collected 100 million Beli, but privately intended to retain her mapmaking services and kill her if she would not fully submit. 15

Personality

Arlong is fiercely devoted to his fellow Fish-Men and reacts with immediate rage when they are killed. When three crew members die in Orange Town, he insists on personally confronting their killers and vows to display their bodies from the pirate flag. 20

He views humans as an inferior race and believes Fish-Men should rule them through strength. His stated dream is not merely personal power, but the creation of a place where Fish-Men no longer suffer discrimination; however, he pursues that goal through oppression and violence. 19 22

Despite claiming that Fish-Men keep their promises, Arlong treats obedience and utility as more important than loyalty. His planned betrayal of Nami demonstrates that he values her navigation and cartography above her life. 15

Control of Cocoyasi Village

Arlong oversees Nami's work from Arlong Park while presenting himself as willing to honor their 100 million Beli agreement. In private, he makes clear that Nami's sea charts—not the money—are what he truly wants. 15

Battle at Arlong Park

After Mark's group kills several Fish-Men, Arlong gathers his officers and decides to personally punish the intruders. Mark kills Kuroobi and Chew, while Arlong briefly blocks Mark's axe with Kiribachi and orders his remaining men to withdraw. 20 21

Mark engulfs the battlefield in darkness, critically wounds Arlong with a giant Dark Fist, and destroys both of his hands. Arlong attempts one final bite attack, but Mark counters by breaking his neck. 22

Hatchan is permitted to take Arlong's body from Arlong Park, ending the Arlong Pirates' rule of the area. 22
