Background / History
Mark was a fitness coach and fighting-game player in his previous life. After finally obtaining the game artifact known as the Combat Bracer, he blacked out and reincarnated in the world of One Piece. The artifact followed him, eventually binding itself to him as a violet wrist tattoo. 1
As a child, Mark witnessed his parents, Rod Bavat and Helvi Rose of Cocoyasi Village, being framed as pirates and executed by the corrupt Marine Nezumi, known as “Mouse.” His father sent him adrift in a wooden basin to save him; Jaba found and raised him in Moss Town. 2 3
Jaba made Mark work from an early age rather than live off him. Mark progressed from chores and shop work to woodcutting, cooking, and axe training, building an unusually strong physical foundation. Jaba’s lesson—become strong enough that no one can press him down—became Mark’s guiding ambition. 2
In Yarl Forest, Mark found and consumed the Dark-Dark Fruit rather than risk losing it to a looter. He killed the man who tried to take it, then discovered the Combat Bracer had activated. 1 2
After six months of intense preparation under Jaba, Mark awakened both Observation Haki and Armament Haki, refined his axe style, and departed Moss Town with Daisy to become a pirate. 10
Appearance
Mark is an exceptionally large, muscular teenager with a woodcutter’s build and a preference for carrying oversized axes.
- Over two meters tall before turning sixteen. 1
- Bronze-colored skin, thick sword-like eyebrows, large eyes, and a straight nose. 1
- Muscular arms described as resembling bundled steel rods. 1
- Initially wore black trousers and an orange jacket while working shirtless in Yarl Forest. 1
- Usually carries the immense Mountain-Splitting Axe on his back. 7 10
- Uses black mist to conceal his face while operating undercover. 46
Personality
Mark is pragmatic, ambitious, and intensely focused on strength. His parents’ murder left him unwilling to be helpless again, while his former life and desire for longevity make him particularly fearful of mortality. 2 7
He is capable of warmth toward those he considers family: he cooks for his crew, carves gifts for Chiu Chiu, protects Daisy in dangerous situations, and remembers Moss Town as home. 14 32 41
In combat, Mark is ruthless and utilitarian. He kills opponents who threaten him or obstruct his goals, harvests life force from enemies to strengthen himself, and has tortured an opponent for information. He insists that he does not bully innocents, but his battle with Smoker caused major civilian casualties in Loguetown. 17 34 37 50
Mark can also be selectively merciful when he sees no reason to kill. He spared Hatchan for having saved Rayleigh, and spared Kuro after learning Silent Step because Kuro had no personal grievance with him. 22 29
Abilities & Skills
Dark-Dark Fruit
Mark possesses the Dark-Dark Fruit, a darkness-based Logia ability with gravitational, devouring, corrosive, and destructive properties. Unlike ordinary Logia users, he cannot elementalize his body to evade attacks. 2 3
- Dark Water — creates suction that pulls targets or objects toward him; used to disrupt Kuroobi, absorb Golden Eagle’s lightning, and draw in cannonballs. 3 14 21 32
- Black Hole — spreads darkness across an area and devours matter, including explosives, weapons, corpses, ships, and enemy forces. 4 9 22 30
- Dark Space — a storage-like dimension accessed through Black Hole; objects placed inside are shredded and it cannot hold living beings. 9
- Regeneration through devouring — can consume bullets lodged in his body and erase wounds without scars. 4
- Dark Fist — a darkness blast inspired by Ace’s Fire Fist; combines corrosion, devouring force, and explosive power. 8 50
- Dark Annihilation / Dark Emperor — large-scale dark spheres used to destroy the 16th Marine Branch’s conference hall and half of Loguetown respectively. 17 37
- Liberation — releases material previously stored through Black Hole. Mark can bury ships under debris, but considers the technique difficult to control precisely. 33
- Attraction Force — uses a large target as an anchor to pull himself through the air; its demonstrated range is roughly 200 meters. He later adapts it to propel himself across seawater. 32 34
- Devil Fruit theft potential — Crocus identifies the fruit’s most dangerous historical property as its ability to steal other Devil Fruit powers. Mark knows of this function but has not demonstrated it. 41
- Limits — extensive techniques drain stamina, and damage causes him more than twice the pain an ordinary person would feel. 2 38
Combat Bracer
The Combat Bracer is a divine artifact from Mark’s former game world, now bound to his left wrist as a violet tattoo.
- Absorbs life force from defeated enemies to permanently improve Mark’s physique rather than merely providing a temporary equipment bonus. 4
- Displays his physical growth through a star-based energy bar. 1 18
- Enhanced physique improves his strength, stamina, and the effective range of his Observation Haki. 18 47
- Mark concealed the Bracer’s true existence from Daisy and Chiu Chiu, attributing his growth to an innate Dark-Dark Fruit ability instead. 34
Haki
Jaba trained Mark in Haki for six months before his departure from Moss Town. 10
- Observation Haki — senses danger, maps enemy positions, anticipates attacks, and allowed Mark to analyze Kuro’s footwork while fighting him. 13 28 47
- Armament Haki — hardens his body, hands, and axe to block gunfire, strike Logia users, and improve his cutting power. 10 21 36
- His Armament Haki allowed him to wound Smoker and take Smoker’s seastone jitte during their fight. 36
Axe Mastery
Mark’s preferred weapon is the Mountain-Splitting Axe, which he uses for direct combat, flying slashes, carving practice, and precision training.
- Learned most of Jaba’s axe techniques and adapted them for a two-handed giant axe. 10
- Can launch darkness-infused flying slashes capable of overpowering Buffettla’s Swordmaster slash. 8
- Uses axe carving to train wrist strength and accuracy. 3
- Favors axes over guns despite having owned firearms in his former life. 4
Martial Arts: Hand Stab
Mark condenses his fingers and hardens his hand with Armament Haki to pierce enemies’ bodies.
- Killed Viper Linx and Kuroobi by piercing their chests. 21 47
- Uses Dark Water to pull opponents into range before striking. 21
- Can apply darkness to increase the technique’s lethality. 21
Silent Step and Shakushi
Mark learned Kuro’s speed-based footwork by observing it in battle.
- Silent Step — produces nearly silent, high-speed movement that can create an invisibility-like effect. 28 29
- Shakushi — allows rapid, changing movement rather than the more linear movement of Soru. 29
- Mark’s Observation Haki lets him retain control at speeds that caused Kuro to attack indiscriminately. 28
- He used Silent Step to hunt down Krieg’s fleeing pirate crews and massacre the Green Lizard Pirates. 34 50
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mountain-Splitting Axe — Mark’s primary weapon; initially weighed over 500 pounds and was later reforged into an axe weighing over a ton. 3 10
- Small hatchet — carried against his chest for practical tasks such as carving and peeling; later used during an interrogation. 4 50
- Combat Bracer — violet tattooed artifact on his left wrist that tracks and enhances his physique. 1 4
Relationships
- Jaba — Adoptive grandfather, employer, mentor, and former pirate. Jaba raised Mark after finding him adrift, taught him axe techniques and Haki, and supported his decision to sail. 2 10
- Daisy — Childhood companion and Moss Pirates crewmate. Mark is protective of her, while Daisy trusts him deeply and worries about the toll his killing takes on him. 7 13 34
- Chiu Chiu / Golden Eagle — Golden-lightning-wielding bird recruited after Mark defeated him. He serves as a loyal aerial combatant and frequently fights beside Mark. 14 17
- Rod Bavat and Helvi Rose — Mark’s parents, murdered by Nezumi after being falsely labeled pirates. Their deaths drive Mark’s pursuit of strength and revenge. 2 3
- Nezumi (“Mouse”) — Corrupt Marine responsible for Mark’s parents’ deaths. Mark destroyed the 16th Marine Branch and killed him, ending his childhood vendetta. 16 18
- Nami — A fellow Cocoyasi Village native whom Mark invited to become the Moss Pirates’ navigator. She initially refused due to her distrust of pirates. 18 22
- Kuro — Mark defeated Kuro to learn Silent Step and Shakushi, then spared him after deciding Kuro’s life energy was not worth taking. 28 29
- Crocus — Warned Mark about the Dark-Dark Fruit’s history and gave the crew a Log Pose. Mark respected the warning but rejected the idea that his power was inherently evil. 41
- Marcus — A Wind Island bartender intimidated into assisting Mark after the fall of the Viper Pirates. Mark offered him work guarding the stolen funds. 47 48
Major Arcs
Moss Town and the Dark-Dark Fruit
Mark discovered the Dark-Dark Fruit in Yarl Forest, killed Ballas while defending his claim to it, and awakened the Combat Bracer. Departure and East Blue Campaign
After training with Jaba, Mark founded the Moss Pirates with Daisy and recruited Chiu Chiu. He slaughtered the White Ghost Pirates, destroyed Nezumi’s 16th Marine Branch, and annihilated the Arlong Pirates, reaching a 60 million Beli bounty. 14 18 22 29
Syrup Village and Krieg Pirates
Mark sought Kuro specifically to copy Silent Step and Shakushi, then defeated and spared him. Soon afterward, he destroyed Don Krieg’s fleet, using Liberation and Silent Step to pursue fleeing crews until his Combat Bracer reached ★★☆. 28 29 33 34
Loguetown Incident
At Roger’s execution platform, Mark fought Smoker, killed Tashigi, and severely wounded Smoker with Dark Emperor. Tina and Headquarters Marines forced him to retreat, leaving Mark seriously injured and newly aware of the danger posed by disciplined Marine forces. 36 37 38
Solomon Shipyard and Wind-Snow Twin Islands
Mark arranged for Jerry to build the best ship possible for 1.3 billion Beli, then traveled alone to Wind-Snow Twin Islands to secure the remaining funds. His 120 million Beli wanted poster spread internationally, drawing the attention of Whitebeard, Teach, Doflamingo, and other pirates. 42 43 45
On Wind Island, Mark assassinated Viper Linx, Quilado, and Giant Lizard Jack, looted pirate holdings, and massacred the Green Lizard Pirates to reach their treasury. By the end of the arc segment, he and Marcus had located roughly two billion Beli, gold bars, and gem-studded weapons. 47 49 50
