Background / History
Ritsuka's early life was covertly engineered by Yuan Shikai. At age eight, Ritsuka's parents appeared to go bankrupt and abandon him over debt, while secretly retaining their money; he was forced into work as a child butler. Yuan intended the arrangement to harden the future Chaldea Master through labor and combat training. 58
At age nine, Ritsuka helped a lost girl, Fenghuangyuan Zhi, find her family. Later that day, debt collectors took him as payment for a 30-million-yen debt and planned to sell him into labor. Zhi redeemed him, employed him as Phoenix Court's butler, and provided housing, food, and schooling. Her nightly reports to an unnamed “Boss” reveal that the rescue and training program were planned in advance. 63
His routine began at 4:50 AM with household work, continued through school and martial-arts sparring, and ended with construction-site labor. By age ten, he could handle delinquents and assassination attempts against his employer; his tactical ability and combat awareness were judged sufficient for mercenary work despite his age. 63 66
At fourteen, Ritsuka tested at 100% Master compatibility and was sent to Chaldea. Initially immature and prone to falling asleep during briefings, he eventually met Mash Kyrielight and became the Master whose resolve allowed her to fully take up her shield. 67 68 70
Personality
Ritsuka is instinctively kind and helpful, demonstrated by aiding Zhi before knowing who she was or what it would cost him. He forms bonds readily even in hostile environments, trusting Kintoki, the Heian-era literary Servants, and alternate-world allies when cooperation is possible. 63 223 225
He also struggles with self-doubt. Ritsuka feels guilty about relying on Mash as his protector and wishes he could take danger in her place. Rather than abandoning his role as a Master, he channels that insecurity into seeking stronger allies and better ways to protect his companions. 355
His defining resolve is to preserve and reclaim humanity. When Watanabe no Tsuna asks what he fights for, Ritsuka answers without hesitation: “to take back the world.” 229
Abilities & Skills
Master Compatibility and Command Spells
Ritsuka possesses 100% Master compatibility and serves as a central summoner and commander for Chaldea. 67
- Strengthened Mash with a Command Spell while jointly raising her shield against Artoria Alter's Noble Phantasm. 70
- Retains three Command Spells as a decisive reserve in critical battles. 307
- During Tezcatlipoca's final trial, used Command Spells to call a large group of allied Servants without consuming his own mana; the available mana had been accumulated by Camazotz over six million years. 453
- His greatest strength is directing Servants and forming alliances rather than overwhelming enemies through personal magecraft. 74 453
Combat Training
Years of forced butler work, martial-arts sparring, and manual labor made Ritsuka unusually capable for his age. 58 63
- Can physically subdue ordinary criminals and protect his employer from assassins. 66
- Developed combat awareness and tactical judgment considered suitable for a mercenary by age ten. 66
- Later fought Goetia directly after Mash's apparent death, using a shield and raw determination rather than retreating. 103 355
- In Heian-kyo, supported Servant battles by deploying Abe no Seimei's sealing formulas on defeated Heroic Spirits, preventing the Fantasy Tree Variant from absorbing their souls. 230
Fate-Based Summoning
Ritsuka's bonds can draw Servants to him beyond conventional summoning conditions.
- His wish for a defender capable of Anti-Purge Defense summoned Artoria Caster directly into Chaldea while he slept. 355
- His connections are not absolute: in the Kingdom of Logres, the land's suppression of fantasy prevented those bonded to him from answering his summons. 1058
- Oberon restored Ritsuka's lost name, memories, and mission in Fairy Britain, allowing him to continue acting as Chaldea's Master. 295
Leadership and Alliance-Building
Ritsuka repeatedly turns potential enemies into allies through recognition, trust, and shared purpose.
- His cry of “GOLDEN!” inspired the amnesiac Sakata Kintoki to adopt the phrase and assist him. 223
- He earned the trust of Watanabe no Tsuna by affirming that he fought to reclaim the world. 229
- In the Deep Sea Cyber Paradise, he proposed a truce with Hakuno Kishinami rather than risk both parties being defeated by a third Master; together they destroyed Demon Pillar Gaap. 299
- He and Hakuno later fought back-to-back against Demon Pillar-derived monsters, formally pledging to survive together. 310
