Childhood and succession

Aoko was introduced as the younger granddaughter of Fifth Magician Aozaki Hachisuke. At six years old, she was described as less naturally talented in magecraft than her elder sister, Touko, though Hachisuke still regarded her with grandfatherly affection 397.

Hachisuke attempted to secure a future Fifth Magic heir by arranging for Yuan Shikai to marry either Aoko or Touko and requiring their first child to bear the Aozaki name. Aoko disliked Yuan for pinching her cheeks and reluctantly accepted the resulting “bridal training” only because she did not feel able to defy her grandfather 398 400.

A defining childhood incident occurred when cats sheltered in her family car’s engine during winter. Aoko unknowingly started the vehicle, killing most of them; one surviving kitten later died despite Hachisuke’s intervention. Aoko lost roughly ten minutes of memory, and the event led Hachisuke to change the family heir, setting the path toward her eventual Fifth Magic inheritance in motion 402 674.

School life

Aoko began elementary school under the unwanted attention of Yuan, who moved in next door and became her teacher. Despite being embarrassed by his teasing and Touko’s conspicuous interest in him, Aoko became class monitor on her first day 401 403 404.

When Nosaka Fuki attempted to frame her, Aoko chose to forgive him publicly after his scheme was exposed. His remorse turned him into her self-proclaimed “number one underling” 408. Her conduct was also read by Kiara Sessyoin’s color-sight as an unwavering blue: lawful good, charitable, and difficult to morally corrupt 408.

By high school, Aoko lived with Alice Kuonji, prepared their breakfast, ranked near the top academically, excelled at sports, and won the student council presidency. She defeated rival Tsukiji Enmaru in debate and physically stopped him when he tried to turn violent; she later knocked out the harassing judo-club president Oshima with a controlled roundhouse kick 674.

Fifth Magician

Before awakening, Aoko avoided using the Fifth Magic and remained known chiefly for Magic Bullet Magecraft, enormous mana reserves, and a refusal to concede 670. Her confrontation with Touko culminated near the old school building, where Soujuurou Shizuki died. Aoko awakened as the Fifth Magician and restored him, after which Jeanne d’Arc stopped the sisters’ battle 1007.

The restoration carried a hidden cost. Aoko had not truly resurrected Soujuurou; she had deferred his death while consuming several hundred years’ worth of the universe’s heat, accelerating entropy. The consequence left her deeply guilty and searching for a way to repair the damage 1008.

Atonement and ORT

A future Aoko borrowed five hundred years to save another world from ORT, repeatedly dying during the effort before forcing ORT into crystallization. She saved that world but could not destroy ORT, creating a threat to the wider universe; she nevertheless states she would make the same choice again 780.

Under the Paperification Rule, Aoko and Alice adopted Beast identities to preserve their power. Aoko became the Fifth Beast, bearing the Principle of Atonement, and joined Alice in a pact with Alaya to aid the Savior against ORT 779.

She gathered combatants from Beyond the Domain in the Imaginary Number Sea, created a Lesser Holy Grail through borrowed Beast power, and used it to summon Soujuurou as her bodyguard and second-in-command 780 856 857. During the final ORT battle, she repeatedly entered melee despite being crushed, with future versions of herself replacing each fallen incarnation 863.

Aoko was a blue-eyed child when first introduced 397. Her adolescent and adult depictions feature long red hair; during the ORT battle, her hair transformed into a galaxy-like expanse as she used near-full future power 863 1033.

Aoko is disciplined, compassionate, and fundamentally principled. She rose early to cook for Alice, forgave Nosaka despite his attempt to frame her, and retained her moral convictions even when others treated her as a violent delinquent 408 674.

She is also hot-tempered, proud, and far more willing to settle a problem with a kick than a long argument. Her reputation as a “female tyrannosaur” came from justified self-defense against Oshima’s harassment, but she regularly uses physical force when provoked 674 675.

Although she initially resented her arranged engagement and wanted an ordinary life, Aoko gradually became emotionally attached to Yuan. Her jealousy toward Alice eventually forced her to confront those feelings directly 681 909.
