Background / History

Zhou Man is a sixteen-year-old outer disciple of True Intent Martial Hall. Despite his family’s poverty and his mother’s prolonged illness, he trained to the brink of the Skin-Flesh Realm—a level of progress considered exceptional for someone without access to spiritual treasures or costly medicine. 4

To pay for his mother’s needs, Zhou Man accepted work at Cloudwater Wharf after his neighbor Liu Shi introduced him to the job. The Wild Wolf Gang later exploited an accident involving a dropped sack, demanding twenty taels of silver in compensation. Unable to pay, Zhou Man was forced into continued labor under the gang’s control. 5 12

The gang’s men also pressured him at home. To keep Li Kuai and True Intent Martial Hall from being implicated, Zhou Man drove Li Kuai away, declared that he was leaving the hall, and refused further contact. 4 12

At the wharf, Zhou Man was selected alongside the strongest laborers for supposedly better-paid work. He noticed the suspicious pattern in the selection but followed with Liu Shi; both were subsequently taken aboard the Su Household’s ship and imprisoned by demons. 6 7 9 10

Wu Yi freed Zhou Man and Liu Shi from the ship. After returning to True Intent Martial Hall, Zhou Man explained the Wild Wolf Gang’s coercion and reconciled with Li Kuai. He resumed martial training under Wu Yi’s direct supervision. 10 11 12 13

Personality

Zhou Man is filial, dutiful, and notably self-sacrificing. He endured the Wild Wolf Gang’s exploitation and severed ties with the martial hall rather than expose Li Kuai or Wu Yi to retaliation. 5 12

He is also compassionate under pressure. While being rescued from a demon-filled ship, his first request was that Wu Yi save Liu Shi as well. 10

Though quick-tempered when others are mistreated, Zhou Man can restrain himself out of respect for those he trusts. He wanted to confront Huang Jia after the laborer shoved Liu Shi, but backed down when Liu Shi asked him to avoid trouble. 6
