Background / History

Chen Dao rose alongside his two sworn brothers by using his unique Headsman's Saber Technique to establish the Wild Wolf Gang's reputation. In his youth, he hoped that, once successful, the gang could benefit Cloudwater City's common people; after aligning with the Zhang Household, however, the gang became an instrument for exploiting them. Chen Dao later took Cloudwater Wharf through loyalty and personal risk, despite outsiders crediting the Zhang Household's backing. 15

When Jackal reported that Wu Yi had returned despite having supposedly died, Chen Dao trusted his second-in-command's confirmation that Wu Yi had previously shown no breath. Fearing that Wu Yi might be a demon or other inhuman entity, he ordered the gang to fortify its headquarters and personally went to seek instructions from the Zhang Household. 5

Zhang Bicheng ordered the Wild Wolf Gang to remain inactive, promising eventual assistance while treating Chen Dao as a disposable subordinate. Chen Dao left the meeting disillusioned, recognizing that the gang had always been a pawn of the Zhang Household. 15

Personality

Chen Dao was pragmatic and cautious when faced with the unknown. He took the possibility of a supernatural Wu Yi seriously, prepared the gang's defenses, and relied heavily on his second-in-command's judgment. 5

Years of dependence on the Zhang Household left him bitter and exhausted. He drank heavily while his gang hid from Wu Yi, yet he retained a desire to reclaim the ideals of his youth and escape the Zhang Household's control. 14 15

His strongest loyalty was toward his subordinates. Doggie's mutilation provoked him into abandoning his plan to flee Cloudwater City; consumed by rage, he chose to fight the demon directly. 16
