The Most Miserable Superman
The sun was blazing. Gotham was brighter today than on any other day.
Though blocked by windows and curtains, the sunlight still baked the air until the skin could almost smell something scorching.
It was the most abnormal noon since summer had passed.
Cyborg stopped searching, disconnected from the database, and opened his eyes. "I can confirm the location, but are you really sure you want to go? That place is a military restricted zone!"
As a national military adviser, trespassing into a restricted zone was a major taboo.
Of course, compared to a national restricted zone, Cyborg wanted Flash and Batman to join World War III and put an end to the conflict once and for all.
"Then let's move," Barry said to Batman, Thomas Wayne. "Take your Batplane and get us there immediately. Superman will be our greatest help!"
"What Batplane?" Thomas asked.
"Don't tell me you don't have a Batplane!" Barry had a bad feeling.
How could Batman possibly not have a Batplane?
"I don't have one of those, but we do have something else we can use. It can barely fly," Thomas said.
An hour later, a private plane took off from the airport.
And an hour earlier, another plane had already left the runway.
The plane passed through dense clouds and, after intense turbulence, finally stabilized in the stratosphere.
Li Zu sat in first class, fiddling with a watermelon-sized plastic Killer Croc toy.
When he activated his ability again, the toy, which had only been thumb-sized, grew larger. Watermelon-sized was already the largest form Li Zu could manage without getting a headache.
The enlarged Killer Croc toy looked remarkably lifelike.
Everything was clearly visible, from its teeth and tongue to its eyeballs, even the blood vessels hidden beneath the fine scales on its neck.
Penguin sat beside Li Zu, sweat constantly seeping out and dripping down his sharp hooked nose.
The white shirt over his chest was already soaked with sweat stains.
"That's a military restricted zone," Penguin repeated what he had said countless times before.
A military restricted zone, protected by heavy firepower, and yet they were flying there in an unarmed private cargo plane!
The moment they entered firing range, they would surely become a burst of fireworks in the sky.
But Penguin could not bring himself to refuse. Compared to being blown to pieces by missiles, becoming a plastic toy seemed like an even worse option.
"Thank you for your bravery, Mr. Cobblepot." Li Zu seemed not to hear the hesitation in Penguin's words. His hands paused over the plastic toy. "There's no need for us to fly directly to our destination. That would be too dangerous."
So you do know it's dangerous.
Yet Penguin kept smiling. "I completely agree with you~"
He also breathed a sigh of relief inside.
Whenever Penguin had the thought of resisting this bastard, the plastic toy in Li Zu's hand would make Killer Croc involuntarily feel fear.
Just from its appearance, Penguin could not help but marvel. What kind of terrifying humanoid monster was this?
A combination of man and crocodile, with weed-like pointed teeth and ten dagger-long claws.
Yet even he had been unable to tear open this man's chest.
Nor could he escape Toyman's clutches, eventually becoming nothing more than a... toy that could only bare its fangs and claws.
How could his own round body possibly escape? He did not want to spend the rest of his life behind a glass display case.
Over the course of their journey, Penguin had wondered more than once.
Was this guy really the former third-rate criminal, Toyman?
If Toyman had really been this powerful, he should not have remained unknown in Gotham.
On a military island,
Fully armed soldiers patrolled back and forth in squads of six, carrying standard-issue rifles.
They protected the top-secret project on this island with their lives.
And eliminated anyone not on the security roster!
The deep pit on the eastern side had already buried too many enemy spies.
Today would perhaps be another repetitive day.
"Yawn~" Someone yawned.
From behind the coastal reefs, a drenched figure in white emerged.
The soldiers jolted and swiftly turned their gun barrels toward his head.
"Don't shoot!!" the drenched figure shouted. "I'm seeking help!"
"Go check him out!" The squad leader nodded.
There were six of them, and they were fully armed. There was no reason to fear someone who looked like a drowned rat.
"How did you get here?" The squad leader pointed his gun at the man in the white coat's chest.
"Is this place..." The man's gaze passed over the squad and toward the distant military zone. "...in charge of the Superman Project?"
Click, click!
Bullets were chambered.
The squad's expressions instantly turned grim.
For him to ask that question, he had clearly come prepared!
"Looks like it is. I want to see Kal-El, the alien you're holding here. I promise, I'll only take two looks at him!" He solemnly promised, "Even seeing him from far away is fine!"
"If you don't want to see your own brains, you'd better behave and not resist!" The squad leader pressed his gun against his forehead.
With his head blown apart, even an Amazonian body that was impervious to blades and bullets could not escape death.
"Of course I don't want to see that." The man in the white coat raised his hand and grabbed the barrel. The corners of his mouth stretched wide, revealing two neat rows of teeth.
He wore an exaggerated, chilling smile.
Excitement gleamed in his eyes. "But perhaps you'll be interested in spending some time in my personal display case!"
"Hmph!" The squad leader showed no mercy and immediately pulled the trigger.
The gun did not fire!
The squad leader was puzzled and increased his strength.
Snap~ The rifle's trigger was actually broken off!
Only then did the squad leader realize that the rifle in his hand had become a toy gun colored pink and yellow.
When he exerted force just now, he had snapped off the toy gun's trigger!
The man in the white coat spun swiftly, his hand brushing over each person's gun barrel.
Everything happened too quickly. Only two accidental gunshots rang out before everything fell silent.
The soldiers looked on in horror as parts of the guns in their hands turned into toys!
Some were only the barrels, while others had spread all the way to the stocks.
"Ah!!!" Another soldier discovered in terror that his hand had turned into a plastic toy, and the toy transformation spread rapidly across his entire body like a virus!
Bang~
A living man instantly became a plastic toy, smashing against the rocks and bouncing away.
Six guns had been disabled.
Five people had lost their ability to resist to varying degrees.
As the last one remaining, the squad leader watched that hand reach toward his face and lightly pat his left cheek.
A strange energy enveloped his body.
Li Zu contentedly changed into the squad leader's clothes, then gathered up the five thumb-sized toy people at his feet.
The Prop Box descended from the sky.
Beside the watermelon-sized Killer Croc lying inside and Harley Quinn in the corner, five more toy soldiers appeared.
Li Zu shook his slightly dizzy head. After casually tossing the naked plastic toy squad leader into the sea behind him, he openly walked toward the military base.
He strutted forward, passing through checkpoint after checkpoint without a single person daring to stop him.
Inside a sealed glass room radiating red light.
A skinny man, little more than skin and bones, curled up in the corner. Hearing footsteps, he raised his head.
The dark circles hanging beneath his eyes revealed his exhaustion.
"You're not from here." He looked at Li Zu, who stood outside the glass in combat gear, watching him.
"That depends on how you see it. If we're talking about my identity as an Earthling, then I'm the local here," Li Zu said with interest.
Who would have thought that this was Superman?
Emaciated, weak, dejected, having lost faith in everything.
The red stellar light above his head was the key to suppressing all of Superman's powers.
The moment he arrived on Earth, the military took him away.
Like a laboratory rat, he spent day after day in this room with nothing but a red sun.
He was the most pitiful Superman.
Superman looked at Li Zu, seemingly considering a question, while Li Zu sighed over what he had gained.
