|---|---|---|
| Foundational Inner Power study | 10–21 | Learns the structure and purpose of a Turing Machine, Boolean logic, programming fundamentals, and the need to defend prosthetic systems from surveillance and intrusion. Xiang Shan modifies his chip and gives him an undisclosed rebel marker. 10 13 19 21 |

Background / History
Youji is the youngest surviving child of Yulia, an engineering-machine worker whose biological husband died after Lithium Bacteria invaded his brain. Of Yulia's seven children, four died from illness, one was taken as Gene Tax, and the eldest left for the city; Youji remained in Scrapheap Town and was regularly bullied for being fatherless. 1
While scavenging in the dump, Youji found Xiang Shan's damaged head and publicly declared that he had gained a new father. Though others mocked the discovery as a dead man's head, Youji insisted that it was alive after seeing an eyeball move. He brought Xiang Shan home, slept while holding his head, and promised to find him a body in the garbage heap. 1
Youji became Xiang Shan's scavenging partner and assistant, helping gather parts, tools, and information about the unfamiliar era. His initial desire for a father figure gradually became a more casual, pet-like familiarity, but he continued to defend Xiang Shan's earnings and support his rebuilding efforts. 2 3
After Xiang Shan recovered his name and revealed that he was a knight, Youji swore to keep his secret. Xiang Shan chose him as the one person he could trust in the town and began training him as an assistant and potential disciple. 8 9
Appearance
Youji is a twelve-year-old boy with a low-cost, partially biological cybernetic body. His prosthetics are functional but fragile enough that a fall produces a distinctive metallic clatter. 1 37
- His legs can detach and be reinstalled after damage. 27
- The rear of his artificial skull can open to eject a removable backup driver chip. 20
- His biological tissue decreases over time, reducing his food needs while increasing his reliance on solar energy. 36
Personality
Youji is intensely curious, excitable, and eager to attach meaning to the people and events around him. He first imagines Xiang Shan as an old-era warrior or father figure, then becomes thrilled by the possibility that his “Master” is a real knight. 1 8 22
He is loyal even when frightened. During Leif's hostage-taking, Youji tells Xiang Shan to escape rather than surrender, and later continues trying to protect Yulia despite being badly injured. 27 47
His enthusiasm for knight-errantry is initially shaped by its image of power and freedom, but Xiang Shan's teaching pushes him to question oppression, violence, and the consequences of choosing the chivalric path. 12 13 37
Abilities & Skills
Scavenging and Repair Assistance
Youji has practical experience surviving in a scrap-based settlement and assisting with prosthetic maintenance.
- Helps Xiang Shan locate discarded components, tools, and usable materials. 2 3
- Understands local recycling customs, including the disposal of organic prosthetic components. 15
- Can perform basic repairs on his own body, including reattaching damaged legs. 27
Programming Fundamentals
Under Xiang Shan's instruction, Youji begins learning the computational basis of Inner Power.
- Studies Boolean operations and receives extensive logic exercises through his brain chip. 20
- Observes driver-chip programming and learns that prosthetics can be controlled through code. 19
- Masters a foundational algorithm during recovery from his injuries. 36
Inner Power Foundations
Youji is not yet a full knight, but has begun the intellectual training required for cybernetic Inner Power.
- Memorizes and repeatedly reconstructs a mechanical Turing Machine without chip assistance. 10 14
- Participates in Xiang Shan's “Turing halting” test meant to expose simulated realities. 11 12
- Receives a modified driver chip designed to block external interference; Xiang Shan warns him to format it rather than allow inspection. 20 21
Relationships
- Xiang Shan — Rescued by Youji from the dump; later becomes his master and guardian. Their relationship develops from Youji's search for a father figure into a committed master-disciple bond. 1 9 36 49
- Yulia — His mother. She works to afford his future adult prosthetic body and fears that Xiang Shan's influence will lead him into danger. She is fatally injured during Enoch's attack. 1 22 47
- Enoch — A hostile townsman whose actions help endanger both Youji and Xiang Shan. Youji identifies him as the person who previously arranged Xiang Shan's shove into the arena. 17 27 47
- Leif — Bandit martial artist who captures Youji to force Xiang Shan into the open. Xiang Shan rescues Youji during their confrontation. 27 29
- The Mayor — Local authority who initially investigates Xiang Shan and later restrains Youji during Enoch's rampage to keep him from being killed. 1 47
Story Role / Major Arcs
Finding Xiang Shan
Youji discovers Xiang Shan's severed head in the scrapyard and insists on treating him as his new father. He helps salvage Xiang Shan's first crude arms, legs, and repair tools while the amnesiac man rebuilds a body. 1 3
Becoming a Disciple
After Xiang Shan reveals his identity as a knight, Youji becomes his confidant and assistant. He follows Xiang Shan into secluded areas, memorizes the Turing Machine, and asks to become a Vagrant in pursuit of freedom. 8 14
Learning Inner Power
Xiang Shan teaches Youji programming, Boolean logic, and the security risks hidden in ordinary prosthetics. He modifies Youji's chip to remove surveillance backdoors and gives him an encrypted marker that could expose him as someone who rejected official protection. 19 21
The Bandit Attack
Leif captures Youji as a hostage to lure Xiang Shan out. Despite being injured, Youji urges his master to flee and avenge him; Xiang Shan instead completes his prosthetic-leg installation and rescues him. 27 29
Separation and Reconciliation
Xiang Shan initially plans to leave Youji behind because the knight-errant path is too dangerous for a child. After Yulia's death and Youji's near-fatal injuries, Xiang Shan admits that Youji was right and accepts responsibility for him as a true disciple. 37 40 49

Trivia
- Youji's early declaration that Xiang Shan was his “new dad” came from loneliness as much as genuine belief that the salvaged head was alive. 1
- He initially considers Xiang Shan an athlete, then reacts with pride when trusted with the truth that Xiang Shan is a knight. 3 9
- Xiang Shan's modified spare chip was ultimately returned through Yulia and formatted before Xiang Shan attempted to leave town. 40
