Geography & Navigation
The New World is defined by extreme weather, violent seas, and unstable navigation. Strength alone does not ensure safe travel; crews depend heavily on skilled navigators to avoid chaotic currents, storms, and sudden environmental hazards. 146 311
- Eternal Log Poses and ordinary Log Poses can become unreliable in certain waters. 138 139
- The Sea of Oblivion is perpetually covered in fog that disrupts Log Poses and severely weakens Observation Haki. 139
- The World's End sea appears deceptively calm but contains spatial anomalies capable of making travelers vanish without a trace. 310 311
- The Sri Lanka Waters, near the entrance to the New World, are so dangerous that at least thirty percent of incoming pirate crews perish there. 201
- Sky Islands, immense tornadoes, abnormal sea currents, and falling landmasses are recurring threats. 311
Political Landscape
Before the Demon God Pirates' rise, the New World was primarily divided among the Four Emperors. Their influence was strong enough that the Navy could not reliably protect even World Government member nations in the region. 125
New World nations generally survive through one of two arrangements:
- Maintaining enough independent military power to deter pirates.
- Paying protection money to a major pirate force in exchange for security. 125
Fish-Man Island formerly relied on three overlapping protectors: the World Government, Jinbe's position as a Seven Warlord, and the Whitebeard Pirates. 125
The Marine presence expanded after the Summit War, with Headquarters relocated to the former G-1 site at the entrance to the New World. Patrol fleets there intercept incoming pirates, and the new base became a key front in the Marines' campaign against piracy. 99 238
Major Locations
| Location | Description |
|---|---|
| Fish-Man Island | A major route between the Grand Line and the New World. Its position makes pirate protection politically necessary. 125 |
| Thunder God Island | The Demon God Pirates' first New World foothold; its central black mountain is continuously struck by lightning. 146 |
| Sea of Oblivion | A fog-shrouded sea that disrupts navigation and Haki perception; Forgotten Island and Sleepy Town lie within it. 139 |
| Rocky Port | A strategically valuable New World region formerly controlled by Wang Zhi and Silver Axe. 195 217 |
| Hive Island / Demon God Island | Former base of the Rocks Pirates, later seized and rebuilt by Douglas Bullet as the Demon God Pirates' central stronghold. 217 |
| Tottoland Waters | The waters surrounding Big Mom's former territory; site of the war between the Beast, Big Mom, Whitebeard, and Demon God forces. 245 291 |
| Wano Country | A mountain nation containing the Pluton Battleship beneath its ancient submerged ruins. 307 |
| World's End | A mysterious sea more than a thousand nautical miles from Wano, associated with disappearances and God-Burial Island. 310 311 |
| Jialan Island | One of the New World's ten most dangerous islands; a colossal man-eating flower island and site of the Pirate Expo. 201 338 |
History
Following the Summit War, Douglas Bullet identified Impel Down's prisoners, facilities, Sea-Prism Stone reserves, and combatants as the foundation for an overlord-class force capable of entering the New World. 28 The World Government initially attempted to contain this threat by offering Bullet a position among the Seven Warlords, hoping he would destabilize the Four Emperors rather than become a fifth one. 99
The Demon God Pirates entered the New World through Fish-Man Island and established their first foothold on Thunder God Island. 138 146 After defeating Wang Zhi and Silver Axe, Bullet seized Rocky Port and Hive Island, remade the island into Demon God Island, and rapidly drew pirate crews, merchants, arms dealers, and other major factions into his sphere of influence. 217
The Tottoland Grand Battle decisively altered the balance of power. Bullet defeated Kaido, Red Count defeated Katakuri, and the Beast Pirates and Charlotte Family were absorbed into the Demon God Pirates. The resulting force controlled more than half of the New World and fielded roughly 200,000 combatants. 291 292
One year after the Summit War, the Demon God Pirates controlled approximately seventy percent of the New World's islands and waters through the Demon God Legion, Beasts Pirates, and Dessert Legion. The Whitebeard Pirates became a refuge for crews resisting this expansion, while Red-Hair territory was reduced by more than half. 338
Power Structure
| Faction | Position in the New World |
|---|---|
| Demon God Pirates | Dominant power controlling 70% of the New World through three super legions. 338 |
| Whitebeard Pirates | A refuge for pirates opposed to Demon God rule; expanded through the recruitment of dissatisfied rookie crews. 338 |
| Red-Hair Pirates | Former Emperor force whose territory was reduced by more than half. 338 |
| Marines | Operate from the New Marine Headquarters at the former G-1 site and enforce an increasingly lethal anti-pirate campaign. 238 243 |
| Revolutionary Army | Controls or influences forty percent of the world's kingdoms outside the New World, creating a separate challenge to World Government authority. 338 |
Trivia
- The New World is repeatedly described as a “hellhole” despite also being called “Paradise.” 311
- The World Government views the unification of major pirate powers as a greater danger than piracy itself; the emergence of a Rocks-like force is considered unacceptable. 293 294
- Demon God Island's hierarchy is physically represented by elevation: higher-ranking members live higher on Demon God Mountain and gain access to superior treatment and training opportunities. 217
