Background & History

Kiritsugu inherited temporal magecraft derived from the research of his biological father, Emiya Kyuken. Kyuken pursued the Root through experiments that eventually involved Dead Apostles; Kiritsugu ultimately shot and killed him, becoming the first magus he ever hunted. 3

Known as the Magus Killer, Kiritsugu relied on modern weapons and underhanded tactics to compensate for his limits as a magus. His ideal of becoming a “Justice's Partner” led him to choose the greater number over the few, even when those choices demanded sacrifice. 2 3

Years before the main Fuyuki events, Kiritsugu rescued Ritsuka from a fire and adopted her. Though he did not initially treat the arrangement as a conventional father-daughter relationship, he protected her closely, traveled with her through war zones, and helped refugees alongside her. 1 2

After deciding to retire from his pursuit of justice, Kiritsugu investigated Fuyuki's Tsukishiro family as a final possibility for a miracle. He suspected that its hidden young girls were Divine Children—beings capable of granting wishes—and moved with Ritsuka into the Emiya residence to investigate. 3 4

The discovery of Miyu confirmed his suspicions about Divine Children. Kiritsugu recognized that Miyu had answered the townspeople's collective wish to survive during the black-mud disaster, but his intention to use her power to save humanity created conflict with Ritsuka. 6 7

His health steadily deteriorated after exposure to the all-consuming black mud. Before his death, he had already relinquished his obsession with being a “Justice's Partner”; rather than passing that ideal to Ritsuka, he entrusted her with caring for Miyu. 11 150

Ritsuka and Miyu buried him in a secluded bamboo forest. Years later, Ritsuka revived him as a Servant, greeted him as “Dad,” and brought him into the confrontation with Darius Enzō. 366 367

Following his revival, Kiritsugu appears as a disheveled, weathered older man in a trench coat. 367

His commitment to utilitarian justice made him capable of calling abandoned civilians a “necessary sacrifice.” Yet his years with Ritsuka changed him. By the end of his life, his adopted daughters had become more important to him than the ideal that had defined his past. 3 150
