Background / History
Illya was born to Kiritsugu Emiya and Irisviel, an artificial life-form, and was made into the Einzbern family's most suitable Holy Grail vessel from birth. The family modified her before birth and later implanted Magic Circuits that could not be deactivated; over seventy percent of her body was converted into circuits. The process continuously converted her life force into Magic and left her body severely weakened. 122 124 125
The Einzberns subjected Illya to punitive experiments, including leaving her in snow for wolves when she resisted. Their aim was to reproduce the Third Magic, materialization of the soul. Ahad estimated that her modified body would fail within roughly a year without intervention. 125
She grew up confined to the Einzbern castle, learning about the outside world from books and assigned instructors but not leaving the estate herself. Her first trip beyond the castle was with Ritsuka shortly before the Holy Grail War. 126
Appearance
Illya is a silver-haired, red-eyed girl with the nearly flawless appearance expected of an Einzbern homunculus. Her modifications prevent her from physically maturing beyond approximately ten years old. 125 127
- Silver hair, often described as soft and fine. 129
- Ruby-red eyes. 127
- Small, light, and physically frail despite her enormous magical reserves. 124 127
- Her condition is visibly affected by prolonged Magic output and fatigue. 124 139
Personality
Illya initially presents herself as cold, proud, and sharp-tongued. Her resentment toward Kiritsugu stems from feeling abandoned while he adopted Emiya Shirou; beneath that anger, she retains a daughter's unresolved affection for him and hesitation toward harming Shirou. 126 130
Her upbringing left her emotionally fragile and accustomed to being treated as a tool. She reacts defensively when Ritsuka shows concern, but gradually accepts Ritsuka's care and becomes openly attached to her. 124 125 127
Although highly knowledgeable about magecraft theory, Illya lacks practical combat experience. She can lose confidence when facing an opponent she cannot quickly overwhelm, making Ritsuka's presence an important source of reassurance. 132
Later, she is described as outwardly cold but inwardly warm, and demonstrates maturity as a Master by directing Servants under pressure. 262 263
Abilities & Skills
Lesser Holy Grail Physiology
Illya's body functions as a Lesser Holy Grail and contains an extraordinary number of Magic Circuits.
- Can supply a Servant with immense amounts of Magic through a Master–Servant contract. 124 126
- Her connection to Fuyuki's ley lines amplifies her output to the point that she can sustain Ritsuka's full power without damaging herself. 131
- The same modifications that grant her output also caused constant life-force loss and originally limited her remaining lifespan. 124 125
- Holy Grail pollution can disrupt her ley-line supply and weaken the Magic available to her. 157
Magecraft
Illya can cast a broad range of magecraft through theoretical understanding and overwhelming Magical Energy.
- Alters terrain to repel attacking insects and familiars. 157
- Uses lightning and plasma-based defenses when supplied with sufficient Magic. 157
- Employs material conversion to create familiars from her own hair. 132
- Applies enhancement magecraft to firearms and ammunition for large-scale attacks against Demon Beasts. 278
- Her practical technique is comparatively underdeveloped; she relies heavily on raw output rather than combat training. 132
White Crane Knight
The White Crane Knight is an automatic pursuit-type familiar made from Illya's hair through material conversion.
- Possesses notable attack and defensive ability despite its small size. 132
- Can secure and reinforce a vehicle with silver threads, allowing extreme high-speed driving maneuvers. 132
- Forms a protective white-crane construct around Illya. 156
Incomplete Third Magic
Ritsuka's Holy Grail wish extracts the Winter Saint's Magic Circuits and fragments of the Third Magic into Illya, repairing the fatal flaw in her artificial body. 165
- Removes Illya's former lifespan restriction and allows her to live as a human. 165 166
- Provides Magic Circuits capable of performing true Magic. 165
- Later manifests through a Magic-built Spirit Graph and an Inherent Domain capable of briefly freezing Tiamat while allowing allies to act. 284
- Her temporal stasis against Tiamat lasts approximately ten seconds. 284
Later Box Garden Power
By her return to Fuyuki, Illya possesses a Spirit Grid likened to a perpetual-motion machine alongside strengthened Gifts acquired in the Box Garden.
- Can potentially defeat an ordinary Fourth Digit God or Demon King if the opponent is caught off guard. 359
- Her power has grown substantially beyond her earlier Holy Grail War state. 359
Equipment / Items
- Divine Beast's Fur — Lion-hide Noble Phantasm worn like a scarf; protects Illya from Noble Phantasms connected to human history. 125 134
- Lesser Holy Grail — Given to Illya by Ritsuka before the Holy Grail War. 126
- Autonomous Lightning Defense Disc — A projected Noble Phantasm given by Ritsuka that automatically releases plasma lightning; it persists while Illya has Magic, the disc remains intact, and Ritsuka continues fighting. 157
- Pledge Chess Piece — Given by Ritsuka as an emergency measure before the battle against Tiamat. 281
- Bishop Chess Piece — Used to establish Servant relationships with Stella and others in the Box Garden. 296
- Youer — A small elf named by Ritsuka and given to Illya; the two become attached to one another. 328
Relationships
- Emiya Ritsuka — Her Berserker/Avenger·Archer Servant and eventual older-sister figure. Ritsuka protects Illya first at Heracles's request, then by her own will, ultimately wishing for Illya's happy human life. 121 127 144 165
- Heracles — Asked Ritsuka to protect Illya in his stead. Ritsuka is summoned in Heracles's place as the Einzbern Berserker. 121 123
- Kiritsugu Emiya — Her biological father. Illya's feelings toward him mix abandonment, resentment, longing, and grief. 122 126 130
- Irisviel von Einzbern — Her artificial-life-form mother; Illya is distressed by revelations surrounding Irisviel's fate. 122
- Emiya Shirou — Kiritsugu's adopted son and Illya's nominal younger brother. She initially views him as the person who took Kiritsugu away, but hesitates after finding him apparently living as an ordinary person. 130 139
- Sella and Lieserl — Einzbern attendants who accompany and watch over Illya. 123 125
- Alcides — Her Avenger Servant during the Chaldea-era journey; he protects the group against Demon Beasts and acknowledges Ritsuka's aid. 262 263
- Youer — A small elf companion that quickly learns Illya's name and shows affection toward her. 328
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fifth Holy Grail War
Illya establishes a Magic Resonance with Ritsuka, but the initial channel nearly kills her due to the strain on her body. Ritsuka severs it rather than continue drawing Magic from her, then later forms a proper Master–Servant contract after negotiating with Ahad. 124 125
She leaves the Einzbern castle for the first time with Ritsuka, experiences ordinary life outside its walls, and asks why other children can live freely while she is expected to die for the Holy Grail War. 126
In Fuyuki, her ley-line connection greatly increases her magical output. She supports Ritsuka's battles, helps form an alliance with Bazett and Cú Chulainn, and participates in the conflict surrounding the corrupted Holy Grail. 131 139 157
Ritsuka ultimately wins the war and uses the Holy Grail to repair Illya's artificial-human flaws, grant her incomplete Third Magic, and ensure that she can live happily as a human. 165
Chaldea and the Age of Gods
Illya later works with Chaldea as a Master alongside Mashu and Avenger. When their transfer to the Age of Gods malfunctions, she commands her Servants during the group's fall and helps secure a safe landing. 262
During the conflict against Tiamat, Illya manifests the power of her incomplete Third Magic to temporarily halt Tiamat and allow allies to move within the temporal stasis. 284
Box Garden
Illya is transported with Stella into the Box Garden after Ritsuka's actions cause a dimensional upheaval. Stella protects her on arrival, and Illya later receives Youer, a small elf Ritsuka names and entrusts to her. 296 328
Alternate-World “Little Illya”
Later chapters distinguish a younger alternate-world Illya from the older Illya already traveling with Ritsuka.
- She awakens in a ruined, snow-covered Fuyuki after a spatial displacement and searches for Miyu. 360 361
- An alternate-world Emiya Ritsuka rescues her, explains that she is in a parallel world, and brings her to the Emiya Residence. 361 362
- She is initially suspicious of Ritsuka's identity and overwhelming control over time and space, but gradually begins trusting her. 363
- Ritsuka gives her the Brahma Spear and reveals that Miyu is Ritsuka's blood-related younger sister. 362 364
- Before returning to her own world, she receives Class Cards and a Knight chess piece from Ritsuka. 377 378
