Background / History

Matt Murdock was blinded in childhood and raised by his father, boxer Jack Murdock. He learned fighting from his father before undergoing harsh training under Stick. After Jack Murdock was murdered for refusing to throw a boxing match, Matt became Daredevil and began fighting crime in Hell's Kitchen. 24

For six months, Daredevil believed his efforts and training had made him capable of protecting Hell's Kitchen. His confidence was shattered when Jack Wilson effortlessly subdued him, leading Matt to conclude that the city’s institutions had never intended to eradicate the criminal powers he opposed. 24

The revelation left Matt despondent. Daredevil seeks the casualty report from S.H.I.E.L.D. and the DEA’s anti-gang operation. Jack deliberately postpones the report, then orders the precinct not to release it until the following year. 20
