Background
Vissel was a seventeen-year-old prodigy of Ainak Wizard Academy and the sole heir of the Hailam Wizard Family. Raymond, his mentor, sent him to join Dago and the forest-dwelling apprentices in response to the Duskblood Council threat. Vissel was expected to gain field experience through the newly formed Forest Patrol. 19 35
Although his rank made him one of the patrol's three strongest members, Dago was elected captain due to his forest experience and record of killing a mid-stage Third-Level Duskblood apprentice. Vissel instead commanded a three-person squad with Ian and Gavin. 20
After his death, Dago recovered Vissel's storage ring. Its contents included Mid-Grade Magic Stones, two fine robes, a Spiritglow Potion, and a family letter intended to guide Vissel's advancement to Formal Wizard. 37 41
Appearance
Vissel is a young wizard with platinum-blond short hair, several locks dyed eerie purple at the tips, and a preference for ornate robes. 19 23
- Carries an oak wand set with a sapphire. 23
- Uses a communication crystal worn around his neck. 36
- His storage ring bears intricate cloud patterns and an inconspicuous family crest. 37
Personality
Vissel is intensely class-conscious and treats wandering wizards as beneath him. He calls forest wizards “rats,” refuses ordinary social courtesy, and regards sharing quarters with the Forest Patrol as beneath his status. 19 20 21
His pride is tied to his academy reputation and family bloodline. When defeated by Dago, he insists that an academy genius and heir should not lose to a “mud-legged peasant.” 36
Despite his cultivated superiority, Vissel proves fearful and self-serving under pressure. During Morlock's attack, he uses the terrified Ian as a shield when his barrier is about to fail. When Dago turns on him, he begs for his life, offering his possessions and servitude. 23 36
Abilities & Skills
Wind Magic
Vissel uses wind-element spells through his sapphire-set oak wand.
- Can form a saber-shaped Wind Blade approximately one meter long. 23
- Casts multiple Green Wind Blades; a volley intended for Dago kills Mariko after Mariko pushes Dago aside. 36
- Killed the remaining Advanced Third-Level black-robed wizard during the watchtower ambush. 36
Protective Barrier
Vissel can create a glowing defensive barrier around himself.
- The barrier covers an area roughly two meters around him. 23
- It initially blocks Morlock's blood spears and vengeful spirit. 23
- It is eventually pierced by Dago's Ice Crystal Cannon. 36
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Oak wand set with a sapphire — used for Wind Blade and defensive spellcasting. 23
- Communication crystal — used to call the academy's Mobile Patrol Unit when Dago attacks him. 36
- Storage ring — high-grade runic ring with roughly five cubic meters of storage space; recovered by Dago after Vissel's death. 37 41
- Spiritglow Potion — stored in his ring as part of his preparation for Formal Wizard advancement. 41
- Two exquisite robes — kept in his storage ring. 41
Relationships
- Dago — Rival and fellow Third-Level apprentice. Vissel dismisses him as a forest “rat,” later obstructs his academy access, coerces him into Town Patrol service, and is ultimately killed by him after Mariko's death. 19 29 34 36
- Raymond — Mentor. Raymond assigns Vissel to the Forest Patrol, asks Dago to tolerate and improve his temperament, and later reveals that he had manipulated both apprentices for Vissel's Formal Wizard inheritance. 19 35 37
- Mariko — Forest Patrol elder whom Vissel initially snubs. Mariko rescues Vissel from Morlock's vengeful spirit; Vissel later kills him with Wind Blades meant for Dago. 20 23 36
- Ian — His Forest Patrol subordinate. Vissel uses Ian as a human shield during Morlock's attack. 20 23
- Gavin — His Forest Patrol subordinate. Gavin is killed by Morlock while serving in Vissel's squad. 20 23
- Hailam / Hyram Family — Vissel is called the Hailam family's sole heir, while later accounts identify Hyram's Tear and his Formal Wizard inheritance with the Hyram Family. 35 37 41
Story Role / Major Arcs
Forest Patrol
Vissel joins the Forest Patrol as the academy's assigned representative but alienates its members almost immediately. He ignores Mariko's handshake, demands that Dago organize the forest wizards for him, refuses nighttime patrols, and declines to live at the communal stronghold. 19 20 21
He demonstrates combat ability by slaughtering bandits who attack him en route to the Treehouse Outpost. However, his conduct during Morlock's assault exposes his cowardice: he shields himself with Ian while Gavin dies. Mariko's rescue and Dago's defeat of Morlock leave the patrol disgusted with him, and Vissel abandons the outpost in shame. 23 24
Town Patrol and Death
Vissel later uses his position to force Dago and Selena into the Town Patrol. He presents the Forest Patrol's successes to Raymond as shared accomplishments, becomes captain of their town unit, and assigns himself to remain at the watchtower while others patrol. 34 35
During a black-robed wizard ambush, Vissel arrives only after Mariko’s group has suffered severe losses. He kills the surviving enemy and loots the corpses, while Mariko lies maimed after protecting a younger wizard. Vissel then launches Wind Blades at Dago; Mariko saves Dago but is cut apart in the attack. 36
Dago retaliates with an Ice Crystal Cannon, shattering Vissel's barrier and grievously wounding him. Vissel calls for academy aid and pleads for mercy, but Dago freezes him into an ice statue with an ice-blue energy sphere. 36
Aftermath
At Vissel's death, Hyram's Tear attaches itself to Dago as a bloodline curse. Raymond later explains that the curse targets anyone below Formal Wizard level who kills a member of the Hyram Family, and that Vissel's father is a Formal Wizard. 37
Dago eventually destroys Vissel's frozen body, recovers his rings and wand, and opens the storage ring five days later. 37 41
Notable Quotes
“Helping sewer rats like you is already the greatest mercy. Asking me to live with you would practically be murder.” 21
“Obviously, I'm the academy's genius wizard, while you're just a rat from the forest!” 36
