Background / History
Displacement from the Future
In Boruto’s original timeline, Divine Arts replace the world’s memories: Kawaki becomes recognized as Naruto’s son and a hero, while Boruto is branded a rogue ninja who murdered the Hokage. Naruto and Hinata are actually imprisoned in Daikokuten Space. Boruto crosses time and space seeking to change his circumstances, but initially conceals himself because he fears destroying what remains of his future 251 252 282.
Naruto discovers his hidden chakra signature during Kaguya’s awakening. Boruto emerges with considerable confidence, only to falter when his familiar banter with Naruto reminds him that his family no longer remembers him correctly 250 251.
Confrontation with Kaguya
Naruto recognizes the loneliness beneath Boruto’s defiance and offers to help him sever causality. Reassured, Boruto releases his Karma and challenges Kaguya. He uses spatial deception, absorption, and a secretly implanted mark to counter her dimensional techniques, ultimately breaking one of her horns with a Rasengan 252 253.
His interference triggers a causal force that attempts to return him to his original timeline. Boruto urgently asks Naruto for help; Naruto severs the threads binding his soul to that forced return, allowing him to remain 254.
Karma’s Hidden Danger
Boruto consents to Naruto’s attempt to remove Momoshiki’s Karma. The procedure reveals that the mark is embedded in his cells, bloodline, and soul. Severing its external connection causes his heart and soul to collapse, forcing Naruto to restore him through time and causality manipulation. Karma returns more deeply integrated than before 261.
Despite his earlier control over Momoshiki’s power, later events expose the continued presence of Momoshiki’s remnant consciousness and the danger of releasing Karma without restraint 288 289 328.
Isshiki, Kawaki, and Death
Boruto identifies Jigen as Isshiki and fights alongside the younger Sasuke, openly acknowledging him as his future master. Their coordinated attacks nearly destroy Jigen’s failing vessel, but Jigen uses the Time-Space Plow to bring a future Kawaki into the battle 277 278 279 281.
This Kawaki is not the Kawaki from Boruto’s own time. After Kawaki embraces domination and threatens the family, Boruto attacks recklessly and is overwhelmed. He resorts to Full Release Karma, sacrificing much of his reason and emotional identity to sustain the fight 283 288 289 447.
Kawaki’s dual-Isshiki power eventually overwhelms him. Boruto activates Time Freeze to survive, but its sustaining power later expires. He briefly awakens in Hinata’s arms, expresses that he misses her and Himawari, and dies before finishing his farewell 307 320 321.
Revival and the Divine Karma Revelation
Naruto retrieves Boruto’s soul and works with Tobirama to separate its binding to Momoshiki. Boruto instinctively begins consuming Momoshiki’s remnant soul, and Naruto redirects the procedure to help him absorb it. He subsequently returns to life 328 329 330 331.
The rescue exposes two further threats: Karma’s core is linked to an Ōtsutsuki God, and Boruto’s soul has been marked by Soul Society for reaping. Later, consuming a God Tree Fruit evolves his Jōgan but also reveals an ancient mark vastly deeper than Momoshiki’s Karma 331 383.
Naruto identifies Boruto as Mount Myōboku’s true Child of Prophecy, connecting Kashin Koji’s instruction to Jiraiya’s legacy. The prophecy places Boruto at the center of a world-changing destiny that could bring him into a fatal conflict with Naruto. Nevertheless, Naruto entrusts him and Sasuke with protecting Bewildering Moon while he travels into the universe 385 390.
Return and Family Restoration
During the Ninja World’s migration, Hagoromo calls Boruto an “aberration from the future” and forcibly sends him forward in time despite his resistance. From the future, Boruto resonates with Ada’s Divine Arts to locate Naruto in the cosmos and seek help for the endangered fighters in the past 414 435.
Back in his original era, Boruto reunites with Sarada, who still remembers him. He enters Kawaki’s Daikokuten Space, defeats him, frees Naruto and Hinata, and reverses Omnipotence’s alteration of the Ninja World’s memories 447 448.
When Kawaki attempts suicide, Boruto saves him, restores his life force, and removes Isshiki’s remaining soul and Karma power. Kawaki apologizes, Naruto welcomes him back, and Boruto reassures his father that he does not need to apologize for failing to protect him 448 449.
Personality
Boruto is outspoken, boastful, and fond of provoking powerful opponents. He dismisses Six Paths fighters as weak, mocks the supposed divinity of the Ōtsutsuki, and trades insults with Naruto. His confidence is supported by tactical skill: he plants marks during exchanges, predicts ambushes, and deliberately exposes false openings 252 253 304.
His bravado conceals profound loneliness and attachment to his family. He fears being separated from Naruto by causality, trusts him through a dangerous Karma-removal procedure, and remains determined to fight when his father’s survival becomes uncertain. By his return home, he tempers his hostility with restraint, sparing and later saving Kawaki out of consideration for Naruto 254 261 286 448 449.
Full Release Karma alters this personality drastically. It dissolves human warmth and familiar memories, leaving a savage fighter whose sophisticated combat instincts persist even as rational thought deteriorates 289 304.
Abilities & Skills
Karma and Ōtsutsuki Assimilation
Karma grants Boruto access to Momoshiki’s power, but its integration makes it both a source of strength and a threat to his identity 252 261.
- Absorption: Devours chakra-based attacks, including Kaguya’s ice, cold, and ash-bone toxicity. In Full Release, he also absorbs Yin–Yang Release Black Rods 253 304.
- Amplification: Converts absorbed chakra into enhanced counterattacks, energy blades, and projectiles 304.
- Regeneration: Rapidly repairs severe wounds during his battle with Kawaki 304.
- Environmental energy: Draws in surrounding Sage Chakra, Divine Tree energy, and energy from sea mist during transformation 288.
- Limitations: Absorption cannot handle ordinary physical objects or living beings. Full Release consumes enormous energy, and he cannot replenish chakra independently in that state, relying on absorbed attacks 304.
- Identity risk: Unrestrained release erodes memories, emotions, and self-control; Momoshiki’s combat instincts can dominate his behavior 289 304.
Jōgan and Spatial Perception
The Jōgan lets Boruto perceive spatial trajectories, folds, and attack positions with exceptional precision 251 253 279.
- Creates a spacetime afterimage to evade All-Killing Ash Bones 253.
- Identifies Jigen’s vulnerable point and anticipates Black Rods summoned through Daikokuten 279.
- Works with Karma to track marked targets across dimensions and alter their spatial coordinates 253.
- Evolves through the God Tree Fruit, incorporating Rinnegan and Tenseigan powers 383.
- His Full Release ocular arsenal also includes Byakugan-based panoramic vision and glimpses of future attacks 304.
Space-Time Techniques
Boruto combines several movement and dimensional abilities rather than relying on a single teleportation method 447.
- Flying Thunder God: Establishes battlefield coordinates with marked kunai and uses rapid jumps for evasion and positioning 278 279.
- Heavenly Hand God: An evolved spatial-exchange Divine Art with a range demonstrated at hundreds of meters, exceeding Sasuke’s Amenotejikara. Also permits short-range spatial jumps 383.
- Combined teleportation: Integrates Flying Thunder God, Yomotsu Hirasaka, and Heavenly Hand God for instantaneous movement 447.
- Dimensional redirection: Forces Kaguya’s attempted escape into a spacetime rift by changing her coordinates 253.
- Zumotoryu Space: An internal dimension capable of basic material storage 335.
- Limit: These powers and Omnipotence do not prevent Hagoromo from forcibly sending him into the future 414.
Rasengan Variants
Boruto applies spatial concealment, extreme scale, and absorbed energy to Rasengan-based attacks 253 279 304.
- Vanishing Rasengan: Disappears from detection before striking Kaguya from behind 253.
- Karma-powered Rasengan: Breaks one of Kaguya’s horns and severely injures her 253.
- Mega-Mega-Mega Big Ball Rasengan: Nearly destroys Jigen’s vessel after Sasuke creates an opening; expends nearly all Boruto’s chakra 279.
- Crimson Spiral: Expands into an immense dark-red sphere during Full Release. Kawaki can absorb, store, shrink, or return it against him 304 307.
Rinnegan Powers and Summons
Full Release gives Boruto additional ocular abilities associated with Momoshiki’s power 304.
- Shinra Tensei: Destroys a mountain-sized boulder dropped from Daikokuten 304.
- Banshō Ten’in: Pulls Kawaki’s attack off course 304.
- Forehead Rinnegan: Releases omnidirectional, blade-like shockwaves 304.
- Inukai Kenmei: Summons a giant serpent-headed hound that spews lava 304.
- Chigari: Rides a divine firebird into battle; Kawaki destroys it through a physical attack rather than shrinking the living creature 304.
Time Freeze
A forbidden emergency ability within Karma freezes time throughout its effective range 307.
- Activated when Kawaki leaves Boruto near death and unable to regenerate quickly enough 307.
- Risks consuming his life force and erasing his consciousness 307.
- Its final sustaining power expires while Hinata guards him, shortly before his death 320 321.
Acquired Divine Arts
Boruto absorbs and fuses powers originating from Ada and Daemon 414 435 447.
- Omnipotence: Restores the Ninja World’s altered memories and exposes Kawaki’s stolen identity 448.
- Clairvoyance: Resonates with Ada across timelines to locate Naruto far away in the universe 435.
- Malice Rebound / reflective Divine Art: Acquired from Daemon as part of Boruto’s later power set 414 447.
- Divine Karma: Continually transforms and strengthens his body, but connects him to the threat of possession by the Ōtsutsuki God 385 387 414.
Swordsmanship and Battle Tactics
Boruto inherits Sasuke’s Uchiha-style swordsmanship and uses a Lightning Release-coated blade 278.
- Reproduces Sasuke’s grip, opening stance, and fine control of force 278.
- Coordinates gravitational restraints, hidden Black Rods, teleportation, and Rasengan strikes with Sasuke 279.
- Uses deception and non-chakra physical attacks to exploit the limits of Kawaki’s absorption and shrinking abilities 304.

Relationships
- Naruto Uzumaki — Father. The younger Naruto supports Boruto’s defiance of causality, revives him, and helps him absorb Momoshiki. Boruto later rescues his original-timeline father and reassures him after their reunion 252 254 330 449.
- Hinata Hyūga — Mother. Guards him through the failure of Time Freeze and holds him during his final moments; later freed from Daikokuten by Boruto 320 321 448.
- Himawari — Sister. His longing for her survives displacement and appears in his final words before his death 251 321.
- Kawaki — Adoptive brother and rival. A future version nearly kills Boruto; the version from Boruto’s own era steals his identity and imprisons their parents. Boruto eventually saves the latter, removes Isshiki’s power, and accepts his apology 283 307 447 448 449.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Master in the future and combat partner in the altered past. Sasuke proudly accepts their relationship and refuses to give up on saving him 278 279 321.
