Ian’s Misidentified Ability
Ian’s ice-winged Bankai transformation leads Doflamingo, Marines, and the World Government to suspect that he ate an unidentified Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan. His lightning and other powers leave them unable to name the supposed fruit 12 32 49. The belief appears on his first bounty poster and remains widespread as his reputation grows 33 88.
The identification is mistaken: Ian receives Hyorinmaru through the Myriad Worlds Lottery System, and he later decides not to eat a Devil Fruit because it would add a seawater weakness to his existing abilities 1 105. Witnesses also see him use his power while standing in the sea, leading Neptune to conclude that Ian is not a Devil Fruit user 68.
Ian sometimes encourages the misconception rather than explain the system. When Owl asks which fruit he ate, Ian refuses to answer; later, he describes the Eight Gates as another manifestation of his supposed Devil Fruit ability 44 56.
