Thorne’s Challenge

Mihawk answered Demon Hunter Thorne’s public challenge because worthy swordsmen had become rare. He initially fought casually, then used Armament Haki to destroy Thorne’s attack and fatally wound him. When Thorne fled, Mihawk killed him with a long-range slash that split the plain. 17 19

First Duel with Ian

After sensing Ian’s sword aura, Mihawk personally invited him to exchange moves. Their clash escalated from conventional sword strikes to Conqueror’s Haki coating and ultimate techniques, with Ian using the Nameless Divine Wind Style against Mihawk’s Draw-Cut. 20 22

Their final exchange split the island in half, but neither claimed victory. Mihawk and Ian called the result a draw, agreed to settle the matter later, and parted as rivals. 22 23

Rift Island Challenge Platform

Expecting a rematch with Ian, Mihawk publicly established a stage on Rift Island and declared that any swordsman who defeated him would inherit the title of World’s Greatest Swordsman. The announcement drew swordsmen, pirates, Marines, and the Four Emperors’ attention from across the seas. 80 82

Loss of the World’s Greatest Swordsman Title

Mihawk and Ian fought their long-awaited rematch under a mutual restriction: neither would use additional abilities, making it a contest of swordsmanship alone. Both entered at full strength, using advanced Haki and their strongest techniques. 84 85

Ian’s Yellow Dragon narrowly defeated Mihawk’s Extreme Draw-Cut. Mihawk received a cut to his cheek, admitted defeat, and formally transferred the title of World’s Greatest Swordsman to Ian. 86

Rift Island Emperor Conflict

Immediately after conceding the title, Mihawk offered to hold off one of the approaching Emperors so Ian would not have to face Kaido and Charlotte Linlin at once. He chose Kaido as his opponent and exchanged island-scale sword attacks with him. 86 88 90

Kaido endured one of Mihawk’s slashes to reach Ian, but Mihawk’s performance established that he remained capable of contending with an Emperor in a real battle. 92

Pursuit of Further Strength
