Background

Ian was an ordinary young man from the twenty-first century before awakening alone amid shipwreck debris on an uninhabited Grand Line island. A Myriad Worlds Lottery System fused with him and granted powers drawn from other worlds, beginning with Hyorinmaru, Flash Step, and Hadō #63: Raikōhō. He adapted quickly, prioritizing survival and testing the stamina limits of his new abilities rather than panicking over his transmigration. 1 2

After encountering the Kid Pirates, Ian confirmed that he had arrived in the One Piece world and used Eustass Kid’s intact left arm to place the era near the beginning of the original timeline. He forced Kid’s crew to take him off the island, beginning his largely aimless voyage across the Grand Line. 2 3

The World Government later identified him as Olycia Ian, claiming his ice abilities and three teardrop-shaped facial marks proved he belonged to the nearly extinct Olycia Tribe, one half of the ancient “Twin Poles” alongside the flame-controlling Lunarians. Ian neither remembers such a heritage nor accepts the claim as defining him. 32 62 96 192

Appearance

Ian normally has black hair, red eyes, and three teardrop-shaped marks beneath his left eye. His appearance changes sharply when he activates Daiguren Hyorinmaru. 38

  • In Bankai, his hair becomes silver-white and he grows to nearly two meters tall. 1 12
  • He wears a black-and-white captain-like haori and manifests ice wings, an ice dragon connected to Hyorinmaru, and twelve rotating ice flowers. 1 44
  • He often uses sunglasses, casual shorts, and an open floral shirt to avoid recognition while traveling. 104
  • His Bankai appearance became the basis for his wanted posters, causing some people to fail to recognize him in his normal black-haired state. 33 38 50

Personality

Ian is calm, observant, and highly adaptable. He studies unfamiliar powers before committing himself, frequently using dangerous opponents as opportunities to test or refine his abilities. His confidence is rooted in his strength, but he remains willing to retreat when fighting an entire major force would create unnecessary risk. 2 10 77

He values freedom over status or allegiance. Ian rejected recruitment by the Seven Warlords, refused to join Deep Current, and has no interest in becoming Pirate King or pursuing inherited racial grudges. His usual goal is simply to travel, explore unusual places, and investigate mysteries that interest him. 32 62 71 104

Although his reputation is brutal, Ian does not seek conflict indiscriminately. He is courteous to those who approach him peacefully, but reacts decisively to threats, obstruction, slavery, or abuse of power. His hostility toward the World Government hardens into an open commitment to destroy it after its repeated attempts to capture or kill him. 7 65 119 187

Abilities & Skills

Hyorinmaru

Hyorinmaru is Ian’s ice-type Soul-Cutting Sword and his primary weapon. Its power is governed by stamina in the One Piece world rather than spiritual pressure. 1 2

  • Shikai — Released with “Sit upon the Frosted Heavens, Hyorinmaru.” It grants ice manipulation, freezing projectiles, barriers, dragons, and battlefield-wide cold. 1 10 11
  • Bankai: Daiguren Hyorinmaru — Creates ice wings, an ice dragon, and twelve ice flowers while vastly increasing Ian’s physical and freezing power. 1 12
  • Ice Heaven Hundred Flower Funeral — A large-scale snowfall and freezing technique once described as his strongest Hyorinmaru art. 47 77
  • Complete Bankai — Achieved after the ice flowers and wings disappear; grants access to Four-World Freeze, which can freeze matter and elements for four steps of time. 135
  • Limit — Bankai and Complete Bankai impose immense stamina burdens, and Ian’s physique determines how much of Hyorinmaru’s power he can safely release. 1 100 135

Ryujin Jakka

Ryujin Jakka is a fire-type Soul-Cutting Sword obtained after the World Expo. Ian considers its normal release more destructive than Hyorinmaru’s regular Bankai, though Hyorinmaru’s Complete Bankai may rival it. 172

  • Shikai — Produces sun-like golden flames capable of melting an island and boiling the surrounding sea. 172
  • Bankai: Zanka no Tachi — Condenses Ryujin Jakka’s flames into a catastrophic form that incinerated an island and carved a permanent ravine across the seabed during testing. 172
  • Flame Hell / Torch — Fire-based techniques used against the World Government’s forces, including a six-thousand-degree vortex that trapped Garp. 187
  • Limit — Zanka no Tachi rapidly drains Ian’s stamina and can only be maintained briefly. 172

Haki

Ian possesses all three forms of Haki and has advanced each through battle and cross-world ability integration.

  • Observation Haki — Senses presences and attacks across wide areas; later develops Future Sight, allowing him to predict opponents such as Kizaru and Tailed Fox. 2 23 29 40
  • Armament Haki — Used to harden his body, sword, and ice defenses; he later learns flowing, penetrating Advanced Armament Haki. 2 11 77
  • Conqueror’s Haki — Can incapacitate weaker opponents, disrupt stronger enemies, and be precisely directed rather than released indiscriminately. 3 7 39
  • Conqueror’s Haki Coating — Coats attacks without direct contact, allowing Ian’s sword strikes to shatter heavily Armament-coated defenses. 7 12

Nameless Divine Wind Style

A system-granted sword style that gave Ian immediate high-level swordsmanship and a heightened state of awareness described as communion with the surrounding world. 16 23

  • White Tiger — A concentrated, destructive sword slash; Ian can infuse it with ice or Amaterasu flames. 16 77 131
  • Twin Gods — Summons Azure Dragon and White Tiger-shaped sword auras for powerful dual attacks. 85 90
  • Black Tortoise — A heavy defensive sword technique capable of resisting large-scale attacks. 75 90
  • Yellow Dragon — His strongest Divine Wind technique, used with Bankai and the Seventh Gate to counter Charlotte Linlin’s full-power assault. 90
  • Ian’s mastery of this style allowed him to draw with Mihawk, then later defeat him in pure swordsmanship and claim the title of World’s Greatest Swordsman. 23 98

Flash Step and Physical Techniques

Ian uses Flash Step for extreme aerial and ground mobility, including moving across water and escaping attacks that overwhelm his defenses. 2 11 75

  • Eight Gates — Opens the Seventh Gate to increase his physical output and the Eighth Gate, Gate of Death, for his most extreme bursts of power. 68 88 132
  • Evening Elephant — A high-impact physical attack used with advanced Haki and the Seventh or Eighth Gate. 89 132
  • Limit — The strongest Gates severely damage and exhaust Ian’s body, requiring Creation Rebirth for recovery after prolonged use. 96 100

Kidō and Lightning Techniques

Ian’s system grants Bleach-derived spells that have been adapted to consume stamina.

  • Hadō #63: Raikōhō / Thunder Roar Cannon — A lightning blast used for direct offense, countering enemy techniques, and dispersing waves. 1 16 40
  • Hadō #88: Flying Dragon Thief-Shaking Heaven Thunder Cannon — A more powerful lightning technique that can be delivered directly or integrated into sword attacks. 35 41 90
  • Bakudō #61: Rikujōkōrō / Six Rods Prison of Light — Six beams of light that restrain a target’s movement. 35 40 41
  • Hadō #90: Black Coffin — A destructive binding technique used against Charlotte Linlin. 89

Special Abilities

  • Creation Rebirth — A stamina-powered healing art that rapidly repairs severe nonfatal injuries. 49 77
  • Dimensional Space — Stores objects, including boats and the Ancient Weapon Pluton, in an internal spatial storage. 70 185
  • Amaterasu Fire — Inextinguishable black flames released from Ian’s body rather than his eyes; ordinary Armament Haki is gradually consumed by them. 100 131
  • Almighty Push — A repulsive-force ability used to scatter large groups of powerful enemies. 140 187

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Hyorinmaru — Ice-type Soul-Cutting Sword; Ian’s first system reward and signature weapon. 1
  • Ryujin Jakka — Fire-type Soul-Cutting Sword gained after the World Expo mission. 172
  • Dimensional Space — Ian’s primary means of storing food, money, boats, and later Pluton while traveling alone. 23 70 185

Relationships

  • Myriad Worlds Lottery System — Fused with Ian after his transmigration; distributes abilities, lottery draws, and missions. 1 70
  • Dracule Mihawk — Swordsmanship rival. Their first duel ended in a draw, while Ian later defeated Mihawk in pure swordsmanship. 23 85 98
  • Charlotte Linlin — Major enemy and rival. Ian used their battle to attain Advanced Armament Haki; she later formed an alliance with Kaido against him before being killed during the World Expo conflict. 77 100 172
  • Kaido — Initially interested in recruiting Ian, while King viewed him as a racial enemy. Kaido later joined Linlin against Ian and was killed during the World Expo conflict. 35 96 172
  • Rayleigh and Shakky — Sources of information on the Olycia Tribe and the world’s hidden history; Rayleigh coated Ian’s boat for his voyage to Fish-Man Island. 62 63 64
  • Jinbe and Neptune — Initially wary of Ian’s reputation, but became indebted to him after he removed the threat to Shirahoshi. 65 69
  • Whitebeard — Maintains a cordial relationship with Ian despite recognizing his overwhelming power; agreed to travel with him toward Wano. 174
  • Yoruichi — A calm companion who discusses Ian’s system missions and current strength with him. 104
  • World Government and Imu — Ian’s principal enemies. Their attempts to eliminate him escalate into open war, ending with Ian killing Imu and destroying the World Government. 119 135 187 192

Trivia

  • Ian used the false name “Yun Ye” while traveling with Deep Current to Whole Cake Island. 70
  • He does not want to eat a Devil Fruit despite his curiosity about them, since it would add a weakness to seawater without offering enough benefit over his existing powers. 105
  • Ian travels with no fixed route, often relying on small boats, newspapers, chance encounters, and other people’s transportation networks rather than navigation skill. 23 49 81
